Hi there guys. Before we make our return (next week fingers crossed) to being updated regularly, I'm looking for some new ideas to improve the site and make new authors feel at home, without writing a long, long story.
One of these ideas is a short story competition. But rather than just going ahead with it and beginning the competition, I'd like to know how you guys feel about it. So now I'll outline my suggestion:
Okay first of all I would say it'd be open to stories about all the soaps (Not sure if this would be 100% fair though since we are pretty close to several Emmerdale sites and boards?). People would maybe have a month to write their story and email it to me. I'd say that stories couldn't be posted on the boards. Then after the closing date I would post all the stories on the website. After reading them, the readers would fill in a form which would then be emailed to me.
The reason why I say a form is that I'm usually not too successful with polls on the site (why try this one I wonder?) and that it'd hopefully stop authors voting for themselves just to make it all fair and above board.
Next thing is the prize. What should I offer? All the fame and fortune of winning the competition? A job on the site/forums? WHAT?
Well that's my basic idea, posted here so hopefully it'd get some sorta response. So come on...

Sounds like a great idea! Love Gemini16. xxxx P.S. I've done a repost of my script, Love me Forever, parts 9 and 10. Could you let me know what you think?

Not sure an avid Eastenders fan with a strong dislike for Emmerdale would be overjoyed about a walk on part in Emmerdale - lol ;D.
I did have another idea! If the competition works out and all maybe the original winner could take part in a second short story comp as a judge, if we decided to change the way it was done. (Would we end up with our very own mini Simon Cowell I wonder?)
Not exactly fame and fortune, but definitley an honour I'd say.
Now for dates. I was thinking of beginning the competition on Friday October 1st, and then ending it Thursday October 28th. Then the following day, fingers crossed, I'd post all the entries on the site, and then the voting would begin. I'd be hoping for it to close maybe two weeks later, with the winner being announced around the 12th November (a Friday).
What do all you great and wise people think?
(Just one other thing? Should it be just one entry per person, to keep the chances of an entrant winning fair, or more than one per person.)

I've decided to close voting. With a six to none vote in favour of this competition. (Went all serious there for a sec! ) The short story competition will be starting October 1st and I'll post details on my site as soon as I can get in.

Hi Alex, Sorry, but I've decided that all the stories must not be posted on either our message boards or our site. That way the people who vote haven't been reading the stories longer, than the rest and keeps it fair. I'm really sorry, but I'm sure that you can see what I'm saying. Apologies again, Eithne soapfanfic.freewebpage.org/short.htm

I am losing hope writing my stories and putting them on the board, I understand that people may not want to read them or too busy, but what's the point of entering this when people aren't reading what we are putting on the fan site? Iam still doing my story, but whether I will list up it up on the board I am not sure as people are not looking, so it's seems a wate of time, so like the other member ( Apologies forgotten your name) would you like to catch up with it Eithne? It's a great way to find out if your stories are upto scratch with readers input, but when they don't it is a bit disappointing.

Hi Sharon. I'm sorry that you feel that way, but to be honest I feel it too sometimes. A lot of stories that I've posted on the site don't get any comments/reviews. This is really annoying when you spend ages planning out a story, only for nobody to bother reading it. Not really Emmerdale related, but my Eastenders fanfic, Lies of A Hooker, hasn't ever got any reviews I don't think and it's around two years old.
I'm considering making it so that you have to give a number of reviews before you can begin a story here. It'd probably cause more people to ignore the board, but I'm sure it's worth a try.
(On a side note, I'm sorry I haven't read any of the stories yet. As I said in another thread, the bravenet mess really caused me a big headache and meant I didn't have much time for anything except changing links. Sorry, but the stories I've missed out on catching up on will definitley be reviewed ASAP!)

I think also it has something to do with a lot of the stories are getting read and alot I have noticed are not. Never mind I am still continiuing on my story and others, so who knows? Anyway. good luck with the idea, and take care.

Hey there,
I'm back from my weekend break.
We all have days like that. Don't worry about it. I'm fine. I'd like any feedback about my five posts before you can post your story idea though.

Just in case you didn't see the website, I've decided not to do the short story competiton as I got no enteries, not one. I'd say that our change in address caused a lot of people not to join in, as I'd tried my best to promote it on Yahoo etc.
Also I'd like to apologise for my absence recently around these boards, as my connection has been really, really bad caused by a storm we had a while back. The problem goes away for a day or two and then that evil crackling sound comes back.
I'm lucky if I can stay online for three minutes at most before the connection disappears. So I have to constantly reconnect, for example it took me about half an hour to post A Fresh Start on the Coronation St. FF boards the other night.
Maybe it's gone for good now, I don't know. Fingers crossed anyway.
Hope I'll be around more soon, so I can catch up on all the great stories and post some of my own in less than half an hour! ;D
