It was late on Christmas eve when the hospital finally agreed to let Chas home, She was far from better but the hospital thought she might benefit from spending time at home she still needed a wheelchair to get round but that didn't bother Carl he just wanted her home so they could all be together for Christmas.Chas had strict instructions to take things easy and to try to us the chair as much as possible as she was still quite weak, Carl new this was going to be a task as Chas was one of the most independent and stubborn people he had ever met, but he said nothing as the doctor discharged her.
Wheeling Chas out to the car he couldn't help but wounder if she had even noticed the ring he had expected Chas to have mentioned it by now he wondered if he should mention it or wait. At the same time as Carl, Chas was also wondering about the ring, Wishing she could just have that one memory back the ring was gorgeous had she help pick it had he supprissed her, why cant I just remember she thought and why had Carl not said any think was he regretting asking her or wasn't it even a engagement ring it could simply have been just a Christmas present given early that never fitted any other finger would she sound persumsious if she asked him or should she wait for him to mention it.Like Carl she decided to wait.

It was nearly 8pm when Carl wheeled Chas into Home Farm, everybody was there waiting to welcome her home , even the Dingles where all allowed in to Matt's annoyance as he didn't trust most of them , Matt didn't mind them coming but he felt uneasy when there was more than a couple to keep his eyes on.

Hello Chas tried to roar as she seen how many of them turned up to see her, she got out of the wheelchair to hug her dad first as he was the first one over to her, Erm Carl coughed, what do you think your doing ,Erm I'm giving my dad a hug if thats OK with you like ,well of course it is Carl replied but you've just been told to take it easy , and soon as you get in your jumping round can you sit down at least, Chas rolled her eyes at Carl but done as she was told , Carl rolled his eyes back at her knowing he had a job on his hands keeping her from exhaustion.
Carl noticed Thomas and Anya standing at th back of the room, he couldn't help feeling sorry for them as they were in a room full of strangers and some of them must have looked so undesirable to them they had never mixed with people such as the dingles before, their mother had always had upmarket type friend's one of the things Carl didn't like about Colleen as when they first met she was so down to earth ,He also felt he had neglected them the last week and wondered if anyone would notice if he slipped into another room to be with his kids on his own for a while.
Carl went over and whispered to Chas, Look Thomas and Anya look a little out of place will you be OK if I take them in another room for a while , Yes of course Chas replied , Carl left her with her family and Matt keeping a close eye on everything.
Carl and the kids where in the parlor watching telly , Thomas and Anya had already been bathed and had their brand new pjs on, Look daddy Anya said sitting on Carl's knee Ive got Pooh bear on my pajamas , and on my new slippers , Oh yes sweetheart there very pretty pajamas, Yuk Thomas shouted you've got Pooh all over your pajamas, your smelly Thomas continued , Daddy tell Thomas he said i smell, Take no notice to him Anya he's being silly , Thomas leave Anya alone he said to Thomas winking at him at the same time so as to stay on good terms with both kids.
Well its nearly time for bed now because Santa will be here soon Carl said, and if your not asleep when he gets here he will go right past and miss us all out . There is no such thing as Santa Anya, dads only saying that so you go to bed , Yes there is Anya said ,isn't there daddy , yes Carl replied Thomas is just teasing you, tell you what lets go and get some mince pies for Santa and carrots for his reindeer's see if he has ate them in the morning .They all left the room and headed for the kitchen.Its me dad who will be eating them Anya or uncle Matt or uncle Jimmy , Carl was starting to get annoyed with Thomas but understood as he remembered getting teased the same way by Matt and Jimmy , and he remembered teasing Max to , But he still thought he should have a word.Carl sent Anya to the vegetable stand to get the carrots so he could have a word,Thomas you have got to stop teasing her , I'm only telling her the truth dad or she will look stupid because there is no Santa, Look you just leave her alone she is alot younger than you are Carl snapped, realising he snapped at Thomas Carl ruffled his hair as if to say its OK,Thomas said OK sorry dad, Carl smiled as Thomas went and got Anya a plate to put the food on, he had got his message across without any trouble and he thought he was getting better at this parenting stuff.
They all went to say good night to Chas before bed and put the mince pies and carrots by the tree, when they got there only Zak Lisa, and Belle where left there the others had all gone home,Hi ya Belle Thomas said hiding the plate of carrots behind his back, he couldn't let her think he still believed in Santa then he would look stupid, Hi ya what you got behind your back, Belle replied , nothing Thomas replied embarrassed , Carl found it amusing for a minute and just watched as his sons face was turning red. Oh hes just helping Anya put some food out for Santa Carl said Anya could not hold it all on her own so Thomas was helping, yeah, yeah I was Thomas said quickly putting the plate down.Come on then Belle time we got you home as well Lisa said realizing Belle would at any moment say something she shouldn't and they would be embarrassed.Lisa Zak and Belle left , Jimmy and Matt had gone out to the wooley for a drink when most of the dingles left so Carl Chas and the kids where left in on there own.
You OK Carl asked Chas, yeah I'm fine Chas replied, OK I'm just putting these two monsters to bed then I will be back down,( Chas at this point had her feet up on the couch,) and don't move from there . OK boss Chas said as he left the room.Anya ran over and give Chas a kiss and a hug, and Thomas followed her , with a rather less enthusiastic one.
After putting the kids to bed Carl came back down to see Chas had gone into the parlor, What the hell are you doing in here Carl asked , Carl is like the next room, your panicking for no reason,Chas why the hell do you think they give you a wheelchair ,for when I get tired and I'm not tired so leave me alone.what ever Carl said as he sat down , do you want a coffee before I start getting all the kids presents out Carl asked still slightly annoyed.yeah if your having one Chas replied sensing the anger in Carl's voice. OK coffee it is then , do you want a sandwich as well or would you rather make it yourself Carl said sarcastically , what is your problem Chas asked you've been funny with me all day since we got out the hospital , you have hardly spoke, Carl didn't realize he was quiet coming home , Chas thought she had done something then but he was thinking about his engagement.Well its you your I can do this I can do that When clearly you know you have to take it easy, Carl was getting more annoyed , he carried on , do you know what it was like for me in that hospital sitting there thinking you where going to die,Don't you care , you get home here and their all here to see you come home , when they could barley be bothered when you needed them most,The two of them sat there in silence for about 10 minutes , I'll make that coffee Carl said do you want something to eat or what, No Chas replied , Ive lost my apatite, Carl walked out and made the coffee,
While he was making the coffee Chas started thinking things through a bit more , she didn't really think how bad it was for him ,he was right it was alright for her she was asleep knew nothing about it, perhaps she was being a little bit selfish not taking any notice of advice from the doctors, And after all he only wanted to look after her was that such a crime,
Carl walked in with the coffee here you go and i made you a turkey sandwich as well, Carl Chas said thats the dinner for tomorrow, So Carl said I turned it upside down and took it from the bottom they wont even notice, Your awful Chas replied shhhhhhhhh I do it every year your the only one who knows,And nobody has ever noticed Chas asked no Carl said Master of deception me, Oh we all know that.Well hurry up and eat it because if you get caught eating that I know nothing about it.
They sat in silence for a few minutes , Chas was glad Carl had broke the ice but the atmosphere was still off and she knew now she had to apologies. Carl, Chas said I know you are worried about me , I'M sorry , are you though Chas I mean its OK now but when its all going off tomorrow you will want to be at the center of it and you cant do it . I wont I promise I'm going to be here with you and the kids if thats OK. of course it is Carl got up and went to sit next to Chas for the first time that day. After half an hour Chas asked Carl is it OK if she went to bed, of course it is come on I'll help you then come back down and sort all this stuff out for the kids,Yeah Chas laughed and don't forget you have carrots and mince pies to nibble on to , yeah and not to mention a plate witch smells of turkey .Carl put Chas to bed and came down to sort things for morning.

As Carl was getting all the presents together on his own he thought he had bought to much this will take me all night he thought I'll never get to bed it still wasn't that late but Carl still had alot to wrap up as he never had much time the past week with all that was going on. he wasn't very good at wrapping up but that didn't bother him as he new Thomas and Anya wouldn't care , don't suppose they will notice anyway he thought there only kids ,It was gone midnight by the time he had finished wrapping every think up , then he had to sort it all out into piles as there wasn't enough room under the tree.
HO HO HOOOOOOO He heard as he was putting the finishing touches to the presents , Carl turned to-wards the door were Matt and Jimmy where standing, Carl burst out laughing at Jimmy dressed in a Santa outfit.
You look mean, Carl said, I wish the kids could see you.Anya would have loved to see you, were did you get it from any way,Oh sandy was playing Santa for the kids in the church hall this afternoon and he came the wooley afterwords and forgot it so we sort of like borrowed it for a laugh,Any way where and when the hell did you get all this don't you think you got a bit much like.I know I realize that now ,I dint think I ordered most of it on line and just threw it in the attic room , Erm wheres it all gunna go Matt said sarcastically, Oh theres loads of room in this place Jimmy said they should be fine, Any way what did you get Thomas any think for me to play with Jimmy asked . Yeah Carl said you can play Barbie's with Anya while me and Matt get stuck into ,Tiger woods on play station 3 , Carl Matt said since when did Thomas like golf anyway, he doesn't Carl replied but I'm sure he will when I let him win me one game. then I'll put fiffa 08 on Ive heard thats fantastic, So hang on Jimmy said you bought tiger woods for Thomas who has never held a golf club in his life yeah Carl said he will love it ,Yeah I can just about understand that but You also got fiffa as well , he hates football,Yeah well Carl said I must admit I sort of wanted that ,Jimmy just laughed at him, Any way Jim I got a game you can play , you will love it, Jimmy looked up excitedly , Yeah what is it, ooooooooooh you will love it its called sing star Anya will need someone to play it with because Chas isn't up to it you can have a good laugh, after you've played Barbie that is, Get lost Carl Matt butted in if there is anyone Fancy's them selves as a pop idol its you, Yeah Iknow Anya wont have a look in tomorrow with that Carl, He will think hes Elvis when he gets hold of that Mike.

Fancy a small one before bed lads or what Matt said as Carl was tidying away the unused wrapping paper, You two are already half gone you wont want to get up in the morning Carl replied., Well Carlos ,Matt replied we don't need to get up early we haven't got any kids so we can stay up as long as we want, WHAT, Carl screamed at Matt you cant be serious you mean your not getting up with the kids.

Carl was stunned he never thought Matt and Jimmy wouldn't want to see the kids on Christmas morning especially Jimmy he always goes on about how Carl was lucky to have kids and he would love to watch his own kids faces in the morning , When Carl was not with Colleen at Christmas Jimmy would bully him all day until he went to see the kids , come on I'll go with you he would say you don't know how lucky you are.to have them , and now when he has got them in his house he wants to stay in bed

Well ,we thought you would want to be on your own with them for a few hours thats all ,Jimmy replied as its the first time you've had them for Christmas on your own, No Carl said still stunned I want us all to be there , Like it was when we were kids we all got up and watch each other opening our presents, and any way you two are not getting out of helping me do that dinner, I'm not doing that on my own and Chas cant help. and Scarlet ,Lexi and Carrie will be here so you have to help .Oh shut up Matt said and get that down your neck and relax will ye, we'll put our alarms on wont we Jim. Yeah Jimmy said.
Any body know where the video camera is Carl asked I want to get it ready for morning. And I wouldn't mind videoing Jimmy in that suit while hes had a few hes not gunna believe hes walked the streets in that tomorrow. Matt started laughing yeah I know Matt said Passing Carl the video camera out of the side board next to him.Carl plugged the Camera in and went to get the two sacks he had bought to put on Thomas and Anya's bed, Whats in there Matt asked as Carl picked them of the floor, Oh I just bought them I didn't know what to do with them so I'm just gunna put a sack full of bits on their bed you know , crappy stuff like pens and that,Matt looked at Jimmy as Jimmy was looking at Matt, you thinking what I'm thinking Jimmy said , yeah Matt said come on lets do it Carl Matt said ,pass me that camera. why what are you doing there isn't much charge in it. we don't need much just pass it,Right Jim Matt said I'll video Santa can put the sacks on their beds ,Oh yeah Carl said you will wake them up, no we wont are they still in the same room tonight, yes Carl said , good well i will set this Camera to night vision hide somewhere in the room ,and I will video Jimmy putting the sacks on their bed, You better make your self look a little bit better than that Carl said laughing at jimmy , you need a few more cushions, What do you mean more cushions, Jimmy said ,Oh sorry Carl replied my mistake , Right how the hell do you get this thing on night vision jimmy asked well if you wernt so wasted it would be easy Carl replied give it here , Carl took the camera of them where and set it , the next thing the three of them where sitting on the floor plotting , and giggling like they did when they where kids ,even down to Matt being the leader telling his older brother how to do things, and ordering his younger brother to a certain extent , Matt had always found it easy to take the lead without the other brothers realizing.,
Right Carl you go in the room and make sure they are asleep , and when you have seen they are asleep open the airing cuboard door I will slip in and you can half shut the door but leave it open so I can video it, Matt was really enjoying this Carl was just going along with it and Jimmy was just drunk and kept laughing at the way Matt was plotting everything, Matt jimmy said you should have been a soldier, This is never going to work Carl said you two are off your heads , Shut up Jimmy and Matt said simultaneously, Carl just stood back and started laughing at them, I'll be back in the minute Carl said , where you going get back here as if everybody's life depended on it,Well I'm going to get changed because if the do wake up they will think Ive been in bed but if i go in my clothes they might know somethings going on.. OK hurry up Matt said . yes Sarge Carl answered laughing at Matt's enthusiasm ,
Five minutes later Carl appeared with his gown on , right he said if we are gunna do this lets do it properly .they all made their way up the stairs ,shhhhhhh Carl said , Hurry up will yeah me cushions are loose and me beard is making my chin itch, Shhhhhhhhhhhh Matt said again , Carl went into the room and opened the airing cupboard door so as Matt could get in while Carl was in the room so he could shut the door over and Matt could record Jimmy putting the sacks on the bed, Carl went to Thomas first he was sound asleep was sound asleep , he kissed Thomas.s head and covered him over then went over to Anya, at first Carl thought she was asleep, He was just about to kiss her head like he did with Thomas when Anya said Goodnight daddy, shhhhhhh Carl said go to sleep ,he gave Anya a kiss and went to leave the room, as he stood up he got a thought, Carl thought oh what the hell ,lets set Jimmy up ,
Carl genitally knelt back down Anya he whispered, Yes daddy Anya replied listen can you hear that, What Anya said, oh Carl said it must be because I have adults ears , I think Santa is out side I can here his reindeer's bells ,if you keep quiet just open one eye a tiny bit you might even see him, but if you do see him don't let him know OK , yes daddy and when he is going out the room as long as he has left a present you can shout after him if you want , because I done that when I seen him when I was little and he just hurried out because he has all the other kids to see, OK daddy Anya replied , OK don't forget say something like good night Santa to him.OK daddy ,Daddy can you leave the lamp on so I can pretend to see, him yes of course sweetheart Carl kissed Anya and left the room making sure he half shut the airing cupboard door on the way out,
Carl new Anya he knew how obsessed Anya got at Christmas he knew Anya would not be content with just saying goodnight and she had got alot more daring around Carl lately she had started to realize she was his little girl and she could get away with almost anything, Carl hoped her new found cheekiness would help him put one over on his brothers.Carl walked out the room he gently nodded at Matt on the way out, He thought Matt obviously knew Anya was awake he had been in there the whole time waiting he must have heared him whispering.
out side Jimmy was waiting , were the hell have you been Jimmy asked quietly , I was making sure thats all Carl replied you can go in now,
Jimmy entered the room he notified right away the lamp was on , he thought the bloody idiot ,so Jimmy made sure his bear ed was covering his face in-case anyone woke up.Matt's videoing was going to plan As Jimmy looked at his niece and nephew, he couldn't help but feel regret, this is all he wanted all his adult life and he would have loved to be doing this to his own kids , he knew it was probably never going to happen for him ,he starred to get a tear in his eye as he vowed there and then that he would always be there for Thomas and Anya as this is the closest he will ever get to be a dad.Jimmy placed the sacks on the end of the kids beds and started to leave the room.
Good night Santa Anya said gently as Jimmy walked out the room , Jimmy stopped half in the room and half out he could see Carl leaning against the banister smirking at him,Jimmy put his hand up to wave and left the room , Daddy , daddy Anya shouted as soon as Jimmy left the room , jumping out of bed did you see him she recognized Carl in the hall way . no Carl said where Anya ran out the room witch made jimmy run down the stairs holding on to the cushions , as the cushions started to slip Jimmy felt th elastic go in the Santa trousers.when he got to the final stair Jimmy stumbled and his pants completely fell down, Daddy look Anya said Santa's pants have fell down I know sweetheart Carl said laughing, Jimmy quickly turned round and saw Carl's smirk , III have to go now ANYA jimmy shouted in a deep voice Ive jimmy paused Ive got to sew my trousers bye, bye Jimmy ran out the door Carl turned round to wards the room and realized Matt had tapped the whole thing ,
Come on sweetheart , you have really got to go to bed now as i don't think Santa has finished delivering all his presents and we have frightened him once I think you should go straight to sleep Anya done as she was told and went right to bed no hassle.
When Carl got down the stairs he started smirking at Jimmy , You set that up didn't you Jimmy snapped , Your an idiot you could have spoilt it on her Oh shes fine she is even more exited now than she was, any way she was awake I had to think of something , I think it worked out great Matt said and we have it all on video to prove it . Jimmy started to see the funny side of it his anger lifted , and he said to Carl , you should have done that Carl it was one of the nicest feelings Ive eve had , just putting them sacks on their beds Carl realized what he meant, Well if Anya still believes next year Jim I promise you can do it again , but you should do it Carl honest mate it bought a tear to my eye , Yeah I know Jim thats why I will let you do it because I get that feeling every single day, Carl put his hand on Jimmy's shoulder and said, I wont spoil it for you then either , thanks mate Jimmy replied , well Carl said I'm off to bed and get rid of that suit or you will be doing no think next year because if Anya sees it , Oh get lost shes just saw him falling down the stairs cushions falling out of the jacket and every think and because daddy says she still believes , woman Carl said I have that effect. Good night .

Christmas Morning

Thomas was the first to wake up as he had found it easy to sleep the night before he woke up quite early, he saw the red sack Jimmy had left on his bed and he started to look through it this was a strange way to get my presents he thought as he started opening his presents, he had a quick look through then he went over to wake Anya up so she could open hers, Anya, Anya wake up you have presents on your bed , It didn't take Anya long to wake even though she had been up late , look Anya look in the sack he said getting back on his bed to carry on opening his, Anya started looking trough her sack sifting through all her coloring books and felt tips and stuff, Anya seemed more exited about telling Thomas about seeing Santa the night before, You where dreaming Thomas old her you never saw Santa , do you think there is more down stars Thomas asked,I don't know Anya replied daddy said he might come back so I went to sleep, Oh shut up Anya, Thomas said you never saw him, Yes I did Anya replied I'm going to wake daddy up and he will tell you.

Daddy, daddy Anya shouted as she ran into Carl and Chas's room waking both Carl and Chas up,Thomas said I never seen Santa, I did didn't I dad ,She was dreaming wasn't she dad she never seen him tell her, Carl was sill half asleep and tried not to answer , Tell him daddy I saw him didn;t I. mmmmm erm If ANYA said she saw Santa Thomas then she saw him, Can we get up now daddy Anya said jumping up and down on the bed, Anya Carl snapped be careful you will hurt Chas , Leave her Chas said she;s exited ,OK tell you what go and see if you can wake up Matt and Jimmy see if they will get up while me and Chas get ready, Thomas and Anya ran out the room to wake up Matt and Jimmy,
you feel OK today then ,Carl asked Chas , you still tired you can stay in bed if you like, N0 I'm OK I want to see the kids Chas replied, OK but if it gets to much let me know Carl replied.
All five of them came downstairs together Carl was glad Matt and Jimmy was both Joining in he wanted them to be involved as they had supported him through everything since his dad had died , even when they thought he had killed their father, they were there for him in a way it was his way of saying thank you ,
Wow, Thomas said when he saw all the presents, Daddy you where right Santa did come back like you said he must have come back 100 times , Anya said excitedly. All three brothers looked at each other and smiled , whats she going on about Chas said noticing the smirk on their faces, Oh I'll tell you later Carl replied.
The rest of the morning went without a hitch the kids seemed to be happy with all their presents and Mathew was playing golf with Thomas on his play-station 3 and Carl and Chas was playing with Anya and her Barbie's, Carl was just making sure Anya didn't wear Chas down.Jimmy was tidying all the wrapping paper up when his phone went.
Jimmy had a shocked look on his face, hang on he said I will go outside Jimmy walked past them and went out side to talk on the phone.

hello , Colleen what the hell do you want, don't you think you've caused enough grief or do you want to cause more,No Jimmy Idont but the are my children as well you know, and I'm missing them , Jimmy could tell by her voice that she was genuinely upset and started feeling sorry for her, I know Coleen but you cannot see them you know that and I'm not sure I cant get into trouble either, I'm sorry Jimmy its just that Ive got presents for them I need them to know I haven't forgotten them, Well I don't know what I can do to help, because I don't know where I stand you should have got a solicitor to do it because i don't think Ican get involved and I don't know if I want to Jimmy replied. please Jimmy I need your help Colleen said. Look Jimmy said I'll talk to Carl see what he thinks thats all I can do , Oh we will all know what he will say Colleen replied crying even worse , look Jimmy said I'll phone you back Jimmy replied and hung up.
As Jimmy walked into the living room and looked around he could see Carl's perfect Christmas every thing Carl had wanted had came good he had also managed to keep the kids focused so they wouldn't miss their mum so much, all happy in their own little world and yet Jimmy thought he was about to ruin it all, He new this was the worst thing that could happen after all they had been through this week, he thought the stress was soon going to tell on Carl he had been through so much and now he is so happy although Chas is still quite ill things were finally starting to look a little better, But surly he thought Carl must have expected something he must have known she would want some sort of contact, But as he looked at them all so happy he wondered how he was going to upset them and how the kids are going to react when they realize they were not actually going to see their mother at all over the holidays.

Carl can I have a word Jimmy asked, Yeah hang on I'm just finishing this game of twister with Anya, Carl replied as he had got his large thin frame in yet another strange position, to Anya and Chas's amusement as they wernt actually playing just dishing out orders to Carl, it would help if you did this with me Jim its not much fun with one, Carl suggested, no Carl we I need a word ,Jimmy gestured with his eyes that there was a problem , Oh what have I done now Carl joked in front of Chas and Anya, so they wouldn't realize , Carl got up I'll be right back he said following Jimmy into the kitchen,

Whats up Carl asked when he walked out, Colleens just phoned me she has presents for the kids , Well what the hell does she want me to do she knows the score I never made the rules Jim ,Carl replied, I know but she just wants them to have her presents thats all, Well she will have to wait I'm not upsetting them now. do yeah know what I mean Jim iv not long got the settled here their both happy this could send them back weeks, Carl Jimmy said don't be selfish how did you feel every Christmas without them, and if you wanted to you could see them any time, Yeah well Carl said I never threatened their lives did I.and any way I don't know weather or not she can send them any think Carl replied,Come on Carl have a heart you don't know the kids are not thinking of her, they know what you have been through they could be holding back. Look Carl said I have Vaughn's number I will give him a ring and see what he says , Its Christmas you will be imposing Jimmy replied, well he said any time and this is any time,
Carl picks up his phone and rings Vaughn's number, Hello Charlie mate, (Jimmy rolls his eyes at Carl's Cheek,)Its Carl King here , Hello Carl hows it going having a nice Christmas, Yeah fine Carl replied well it was until five minutes ago anyway, I need some advice,Of coarse anything to help Vaughn replied, erm Colleens Just phoned Jimmy up on his mobile she wants to give the kids presents and we don't know what to do about it is she allowed and if so how do we get them, Vaughn thought for a moment , look I'm not busy I will go and see her if you want, see what she has for them make sure there is no letters or nothing and if every think is fine I will bring them down if thats OK, oh are you sue Charlie that would be great, Well am at a loose end anyway so it would be nice to do some one a favor at Christmas, Call it my good deed hey Vaughn replied,OK Carl replied will you give me a ring when you are on your way over then,yeah OK ill phone you soon. They both hung up, Wow Carl said them Coppers , none of them have a family life they are all lonely he can't wait to get over here.Your a cheeky sod Jimmy replied, do you think it will wait until tomorrow Jim, their having such agood time Carl said as he was looking into the living room, Just see what Vaughn says first Jimmy replied.Carl and Jimmy went back and joined the others and started playing again.
Whats up Chas asked Carl as he sat down, nothing Carl replied sounding worried ,OH yeah the is I know you by now , look come in the kitchen and I will tell you , they both went to the kitchen and Carl called Matt out too as he thought he might as well tell them both together.

It was nearly Dinner time at Home Farm , Scarlet and Carrie had just arrived all the three brothers had helped do the dinner, They had surprised themselves at how well they had managed in the kitchen without female supervision.
Well come on you lot Carl shouted dinner is getting served put them games away and lets get around this table. As soon as they started putting all their games away Carl's phone rang Carl looked at the number flashing up on his mobile, Crap he said its Vaughn trust him to ring just as we are getting ready to eat,
Carl answered , Hello Charlie how did you get on, Not bad Vaughn replied put the kettle on I will be five minutes , OK will do see you then ,then . Carl replied . Dinners going to have to wait a while Carl said as he put the kettle on , He asked for a cuppa, Cheeky sod Carl continued , he probably wants his dinner as well. Well try to be quick wont yeah Matt said I'm starving , Yeah I will but I can't just say thank you goodbye after all he is doing us a favor.
The door bell rings here he is Carl said I'll see to him now, Carl answered the door , hello mate Carl said opening the door wide so he could walk through it, Carl quickly noticed that Vaughn had 2 sacks similar to the ones that he had bought, Yeah just leave them there Carl said I will give them to Thomas and Anya later today when I can explain things to them. OK Vaughn said she just wants you to tell them she misses them and she still loves them,
How is she then, Carl asked walking into the parlor away from were the kids can hear,Oh she's fine a little upset but she is OK, Yeah well Carl said arnt we all upset does she realize what today is , I can't feel sorry for her any more, at first yeah I felt sorry for her but now When I think of what she has put us all through all I feel is hate and if she thinks after this is over she's getting these kids back ,( Carl paused he hadn't expected to blurt all this out to the local police, in fact he didn't even realize how strong he felt himself) Well she has a fight on her hands thats ball I'm saying.
Jimmy walked in with Vaughn's tea, Hello Charlie Jimmy said 2 Sugars isn't it Jimmy said handing the cup over, Our Carl been twisting your ear has he , No hes fine honest its no bother,You going to family now then Jimmy asked , for your Dinner, OH no to be honest I was actually working today and it was quiet so thats why I offered we usually have some wine in the office , but thats it, What Carl said you Work on Christmas day, Someone has to do it you know there is a lot of burglaries on Christmas day,It fell quiet for a moment as Carl and Jimmy found themselves feeling sorry for him , Well look Jimmy said now your here why not have dinner with us , What I couldn't do that Vaughn said ,Carl let out a sigh of relief , but to his annoyance Jimmy Carried on , no you must stay we've got plenty and one good turn and all that , well if its OK with you lot I would love to , ERM , I'll just go and set another place then Carl said stunned, Carl walked into the kitchen where Matt was waiting he had started amusing Thomas and Anya by wearing a piny and putting a tea towel on his head so he looked like the cook ,Yuk Carl said as he walked in you look ugly,Don't worry though we have a fella for you Jimmy just asked Charlie to dinner, Carl said , and I think he will adore you Carl laughed, What Matt snapped what for ,Carl looked Matt up and down and replied, I don't know ,Maybe he wants our resident house keeper to get a bloke Carl said stroking Matt's face. Matt took off his disguise , why the hell Carl , one good turn he said and then asked him any way Ive goto get another place ready so we can all sit down now and have dinner.
Dinner went well and they all found Vaughn OK although Carl didn't really know where he stood this was the man who had thought him capable of murder not once but twice did he still blame him for grace's death , After all part of Carl blamed himself he was only getting close to her to keep safe he was not thinking straight , but why did I get in volved , what an idiot, he was also worried about Vaughn mentioning Grace to Chas , although Chas new something had gone on he hadn't told her everything and he knew one day it would course trouble for him.

After dinner Chas was getting tired Carl had noticed at dinner but said nothing as they were all eating ,As he was clearing the table Chas was still sitting there when every one else had gone and carried on with what they was doing before with the exemption of Charlie he had decided to impose himself a little bit longer,
You OK Carl asked , Yeah but I do feel a little bit tired would it be OK if I went to bed and lie down for a while Chas replied, yeah hang on I will help you up Carl said as he was loading dishes in the dish washer.
Chas went to get up but she felt faint and nearly fell to the floor, what are you doing Carl said running over to help her, Sorry Chas said Ifeel a bit dizzy I think I might of overdone it a bit.OK Carl replied and picked Chas up and carried her to bed.
Chas, Carl said placing her on the bed , there is something I think we should talk about, Yeah Chas said whats that ,The night fore you got sick , It was the best night of my life, Carl said stroking her hair, WAS it Chas replied, why don't you tell me about it then , Well I have been meaning to,Carl replied but I can never seem to get the words out or something comes up , like today I had every thing planned for dinner I was going to tell you then but Charlie Vaughn turned up and that was that, Carl you can't tell me about a romantic night out in front of your family,Yeah ,Carl lifted Chas.s chin up to so he could look her in the eye, but I can ask you to marry me like I did on our date, Chas looked at the ring ,Its beautiful, Chas said with a tear in her eye. No it not Carl replied I want you to take it of , But , no Carl interrupted take it of , baffled by Carl's remark Chas took the ring off.That ring has bought us bad look Carl said , Carl stood up reached into his pocket , and knelt down on the floor next to Chas, Chas Carl said with a faint tear in his eye , Will you Marry me, he said as he gave her yet another new ring,Chas suddenly never felt tired any more she jumped up and threw her arms around Carl's neck, take it thats a yes then Carl said,OH yes , yes yes Chas kept repeating, she looked at the ring this ring was even better than the first one, why buy 2 rings though she said still looking it, because I wanted you to remember me giving you the ring you deserve that much , and because I love you. Carl and Chas lay there for a while just holding one another, until they both Nodded off to sleep.

Where is Carl, Matt asked Jimmy , Oh him and Chas are doing the dishes Jimmy replied their not Matt said Ive just been out there,MMMMM I don't know then , I think dad took Chas to bed Thomas interrupted I saw them going upstairs when I went to the toilet I think Chas was tired because dad was carrying her Thomas continued, Jimmy and Matt looked at each other concerned, Do you think everything is OK Matt, Jimmy asked , Well I think someone best check he can be a bit of a Pratt sometimes remember him not calling an ambulance he just panics,I'll go Carrie interrupted Chas doesn't need you two walking in on her, Carrie went up to check.
Carrie smiled as she walked in the room and saw Carl asleep holding Chas, She knew her and Carl never always seen eye to eye on things, but that was how Carl had wanted it he found it hard after finding out about her being with his dad, But secretly she still had a soft spot for Carl she felt close to him even if he never did to her, all she wanted was for him to be happy ,Carrie always felt sorry for Carl as he was the Black sheep of the family he could never please his father and he was always trying so hard, with Matt and Jimmy in the family business and doing well at it Tom was more than proud of them although they took a certain amount of bullying to of their dad it was nothing compared to what Carl took, Mostly because of how well Max was doing in school to,Carrie always remembered how Tom would Call the two of them into a room and have them do certain exams witch he always new Max would win,and because Max was a couple of years younger than Carl he would have to sit there and listen to his father saying how much of an idiot he was,and how he would not amount to nothing, She also remembers how she would pay Max to let Carl win the tests so she would not have to see the bullying But after a while Tom cottoned on to what Max was doing and Carl would get called a cheat he could never win with his dad,But for some reason Carrie never knew why but Carl loved his dad more than anything all he ever done was try to please him and the more he tried the worse Tom ribbed him, I wish I could talk to you Carrie thought as she watched him sleep, tell you why you were so special to me, you never let him get to you, you would run in from school with your certificates for swimming or cricket, and medals for your P.E. Witch you excelled at You were so proud of yourself, and the response was where the hell will that get you lad,I remember him ripping your certificates up and putting them in the bin,you managed to keep the medals Carl Carrie thought, But I wish I could tell you I have the certificates, I took them out the bin and tapped them together I have a scrap book of all your sports events from when i first realised what your father was doing, I long so much to show you but i fear for the trouble it will cause my biggest regret Carl was letting you fall for me because that spoiled everything.

Carrie had only been standing there a couple of minutes but it felt like longer as the flashbacks where taking over her mind, she left the room with a tear in her eye as they slept peacefully.
Their OK Carrie said as she walked back in the living room they are both asleep .Lazy git Matt said , as he was playing fifa with Thomas, Oh leave him Carrie said he will be drained its been an emotional time for Carl these last couple of days , Just then Carl walked in ,Sorry he said i was lying with Chas and I nodded of she got a bit tired , Dad Thomas said can I play you next on fifa Ive won uncle Matt twice he is so rubbish , yeah coarse you can son but I can tell you now it wont be as easy to win me. Yeah it will Matt said your rubbish oh he did did he Carl replied , Well when Ive beet you I will beet him,

The rest of the day went without a hitch Charley went home after about half an hour so when Carl had got up he had already left.Carl decided sines Chas was in bed now would be a good time to tell the kids about their mum sending them presents .
Thomas Anya can you come in the parlor I need to talk to you alone Carl said. Thomas and Anya followed Carl When they got in there their presents from colleen was laying on the sofa ready for them, Your mother sent these down Carl said pointing at the presents, Thomas just looked at them Anya run right over to hers, oooooooooh Anya said Santa must think I live with mummy too, yes love he must Carl said as Anya started unwrapping yet more Barbie stuff, But Carl was more interested in Thomas he just stood at the door as he didn't know how to react. Thomas Carl said is there a problem,No Thomas said so are you going to open your presents then Carl replied,No I don't want them, yes you do your mum sent them down She wants you to know she misses you, I don't care Thomas said as he ran over and kicked the bag and run out the room, Carl left him to run out the room and turned to Anya, would you like scarlet to help you with that sweetheart do you want to go back in the other room show her what you have, yeah Anya said excitedly . They went in together Thomas was already in there sitting with his arms folded in front of him ,Anya run right over to scarlet with all her new presents, Carl went and sat next to Thomas on the settee , Well mate do you want to talk about it Carl said , NO Thomas replied looking straight ahead avoiding eye contact, look Carl said I know you took it bad but Coming here and stuff its hard on you mate , Carl looked around the room everyone was there he needed to be alone with Thomas , Come on mate get your coat on me and you are going for a walk .

Carl and Thomas where walking around the grounds of home farm, Carl put his arm around Thomas's shoulder come on lad he said you can talk to me I'm your old man you can tell your old man anything .She lied dad ,What who Carl said , mum she lied, She done all those nasty things with Rosie and she lied , she told us all the time you never cared she said you would never let us live with you here that you didn't want us, she just lied to us all the time.Look Thomas Carl replied It might have seemed that way to your mum sometimes, me and your mum we don't get on no more thats all so she thought i never cared ,Yeah I know dad I said that to Anya mum is horrible because she told us dad dosent care about us but he does, Thomas you really should not be saying things like that to Anya Carl replied, why its true , Thomas replied , No its not Carl snapped , look Thomas its time for me to be honest OK. Yeah Thomas answered wearily,I haven't always been the best dad in the world infect i was a bit of an idiot I can't explain how but I promise you it probably seemed to your mum that I didn't care and to be honest Ive only realised recently what Ive been missing out on ,so try not to blame her , So didn't you care then dad Thomas asked confused, yes Carl said Ive always cared but i Haven't always shown it thats all, and to be honest I owe you and Anya a big fat sorry for being the worlds worse dad, so don't blame your mum son because it isn't her fault, Thomas smiled , Carl smiled back , Come on lets get back see what mum got yeah I'm getting Cold out here, Dad Thomas said as they where walking back , do you think mum really loves us then , of coarse she does now come stop saying that , Carl said ruffling Thomas's hair.Dad thomas continued will you let her know I miss her too , yes son Carl replied.
