Hi all, I've decided to start a new script. Not sure on how often I'll be able to update it but I wanted to write about an idea I've had that I feel would boost Emmerdale's viewing figures!
The principle characters in the story will be Jasmine, Emily, Lexi and a new character called Ben.
Each part of the story will have a day and date assigned to it so it's easier to keep track of the story's progression through time.
Part 1 - 5th August 2007
It's early morning and a bus pulls to a halt in Emmerdale. A pair of scruffy, worn trainers step off and onto the path below. They belong to a tall, slim but well built, good-looking young man with a grade 2 haircut who is wearing torn dark jeans and a white t-shirt under a long-sleeved blue shirt. As the bus drives away, he drops his sports backpack on the ground and pulls a small scrap of paper from his jeans pocket and reads the scrawled biro writing.
"ALAN TURNER"
Tucking the paper back into his pocket, the man grabs his backpack and strolls down Main Street, eyeing up the houses as he passes. As he passes the post office, Lexi struts out of the door holding a pint of milk. She immediately sees the newcomer and approaches him with a smile.
LEXI: Morning! Not seen you around here yet?
MAN: Nah you won't have done, only just stepped off the bus y'see.
LEXI: Ooh right, fresh meat then! (WINKS)
MAN: That's me. Listen do you know if Alan Turner still lives around here?
LEXI: Never heard of him, how about you join me for breakfast and I'll see if my sister knows?
MAN: (SMILES) Why not...
LEXI: Great! Follow me, I'm Lexi by the way.
MAN: Ben.
LEXI: Welcome to Emmerdale Ben. (GRINS)
Ben follows Lexi to the old vicarage and they make their way inside, to be met with Carrie and Scarlet eating at the dining room table.
LEXI: Come through Ben.
CARRIE: Who's Ben?!
Scarlet and Carrie both crane their necks to see Ben walk into the room, looking slightly nervous. Lexi takes his arm and pulls him towards her.
BEN: Hi I'm Ben, I've literally just arrived here.
LEXI: I found him wandering the streets, isn't he cute!?
CARRIE: Lexi what the hell do you think you're doing bringing this man in this house, we don't know him from Adam! (TO BEN) No offence...
BEN: (SMILES) None taken.
SCARLET: Mum! Do you have to be so rude!
LEXI: Yeah come on sis, he needs some help anyway. Who was it you're looking for?
Lexi leads Ben to the couch where she sits closely to him and places a hand on his knee.
BEN: Erm Alan Turner... do you know if he still lives in Emmerdale?
CARRIE: Who wants to know?
SCARLET: Mum!
BEN: Just a relative.
CARRIE: Oh right... well yeah he lives here, number 19. I don't know him that well but I'm sure if you went round he'd be in.
BEN: Cheers, you've been a great help.
Ben gets up to leave but Lexi pulls him back down next to her.
LEXI: You don't have to leave so soon surely, you just got here? Scarlet, make him a cuppa.
SCARLET: Alright...
CARRIE: Stay where you are Scarlet, you're not her skivvy!
Carrie glares at Lexi who gives her evils back.
BEN: Look I really had better go, I don't wanna cause a row. I'm hoping to be around for a while anyway and I saw a pub across the road...
LEXI: Excellent, see you for a drink tonight then.
Ben stands up and turns to Carrie and Scarlet who are sat at the table.
BEN: Sorry to disturb you both, see ya.
SCARLET: (SHY) Oh it's fine...
CARRIE: Not really your fault, if anyone should be saying sorry it's my wayward sister.
LEXI: Take no notice Ben!
Lexi quickly smacks Ben's backside as he exits and looks back at Carrie with a smirk.
Outside, Ben checks the house numbers on either side of the road looking for number 19. After a few seconds he sees the cottage and stands at the gate, hestitating for a moment before going through the gate and knocking on the door. Waiting a few moments he knocks a second time and peers through the glass in the door. Not getting any joy, Ben steps to the side and peers through the window of Betty's cottage, seeing nobody inside. Suddenly there's a shout from behind him;
"Excuse me, can I help you?!"
Ben turns around to be faced with Edna, her hands clamped on the garden gate, glaring straight at him.
BEN: Oh hi, I'm Ben. I was told Alan Turner lives here?
EDNA: Can I ask what your business is?
BEN: Just wanted to catch up with him, I'm family y'see.
EDNA: Really? Well he's never mentioned any "Ben" before.
BEN: Nah he won't have done, we're not close. So does he live here Mrs...?
EDNA: Birch. And yes he does, however he's in Hotten at the moment on an errand.
BEN: Ah shame, I really did need to see him Mrs Birch, I've come all the way from Manchester.
EDNA: Well I'm sure he won't be long young man, why don't you wait inside with me?
BEN: Cheers, that's very kind.
1 HOUR LATER
A taxi arrives on Main Street and Alan climbs out of the passenger seat. He pays the driver and carries a package into number 19.
EDNA: Ben! Mr Turner has just returned home.
Ben emerges from Edna's kitchen holding a spanner and a dirty rag.
BEN: Great, I'll just put these back and go straight over.
EDNA: Thankyou for fixing the tap Ben, my lodger would usually do it but he's out galivanting with Valerie Lambert, the fool.
BEN: No worries, thanks for the drink.
EDNA: Anytime! I do hope you'll say goodbye before you leave.
BEN: Well with any luck Mrs Birch, I won't be saying goodbye for a while yet.
EDNA: (SMILING) Lovely, and do call me Edna.
BEN: Right... see you later then Edna. (GRINS)
Ben closes Edna's door behind him and strolls across the road to number 19. He knocks loudly on the door and waits, tapping his fingers against the side of his leg. Eventually Alan opens the door, looking back in surprise at Ben.
ALAN: Can I help you?
BEN: Are you Alan Turner?
ALAN: Yes...
BEN: I'm Ben, Ben Turner.
ALAN: I'm sorry, who?
BEN: Ben Turner - Terence's son... your grandson.
