The first owner was Lord of the Manor: George Verney who leased it to Amy Posslethwaite, she employed Alison Gibbons to work with her. In 1973 Amy became to ill to work at it and gave Alison the lease. Alison and Henry agreed to to buy the shop free-hold from George who agreed. but he insisted that Alison have controlling interest and that Henry should only be an "upstart"
Henry bought Alison's share in 1974 when she moved to Jersey, he employed the viar's wife, Liz to work in the shop.
IN 1976 when the vicar retired, he and Liz left the village and Norah Norris took over.
the next bit of info i have seems to jump to 1988, and it says Mrs Robson ran the shop.

The link below is a clip from late 1973 set in the village shop! The woman behind the counter is Alison Gibbons. Coming out of the back room is Janie Blakey. The woman who walks into the shop is Christine Sharp an official from the milk marketing board. Christine married Joe Sugden in September 1974 www.youtube.com/watch?v=STH7NSOHbDg

Like Nick I know so much from watching since the start and various archive materials that are out there including a whole series of paperback stories that cover a lot of Emmerdale history.
There is a wealth of history to be learnt from the members here should you want to know anything.
