EMMERDALE STARS TO SHINE FOR CHARITY EXTRAVAGANZA EMMA CHRISTIE
08:50 - 17 February 2007 Stars from one of the UK's most popular soaps have teamed up with the Press and Journal for this year's Emmerdale Extravaganza - with all funds going directly to the paper's Year of Giving charity campaign.
The event, to be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) in June, will feature a range of sponsored activities guaranteed to boost the adrenalin.
Brave volunteers can sign up for a range of sponsored events including dumper-truck driving, abseiling down an Aberdeen landmark and walking on the wings of a vintage plane as it flies through north-east skies.
Our Year of Giving aims to raise £500,000 for people in need up and down the country. Half the money raised will be shared equally between five charities - Ucan, the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, Leukaemia Research, Maggie's Highlands cancer care centre in Inverness, and Emmerdale Charities - which will donate money to a range of causes.
The remaining 50% will be distributed between smaller charities and good causes across the north and north-east.
Our biggest event is the Emmerdale Extravaganza, sponsored by Qserv. It has a change of venues this year, moving from Inchmarlo near Banchory, into Aberdeen itself.
One of the highlights of the day will be the "offshore" experience, where sponsored volunteers will be winched on to a rescue helicopter from a boat in the North Sea.
In the lady drivers' challenge, teams of four women will be asked to take to the wheel of four heavy-duty vehicles.
Those with a head for heights can sign up for the long-established wing-walk.
The event is dedicated to Kevin Humphreys, the 15-year-old boy from Stonehaven who died from leukaemia on Christmas Day 2001, robbing him of the opportunity to fulfil his dream of wing-walking to raise funds for other sufferers. Another challenge involves abseiling down the tower at the AECC.
Other events include a climbing wall challenge for schools, the Caledyne Corporate six-a-side football tournament, open to men and women, and the I. and K. Motors Woolpack pub challenge, involving hotels, pubs and nightclubs from around the city.
Teams of four from each business are invited to enter an Emmerdale pub quiz, on condition that they also organise a fundraising event in aid of the Year of Giving.
A golf tournament, sponsored by Deveron Homes and featuring cast members, will be held in the morning at Craibstone Golf Club. Teams of four are invited to enter.
Anyone interested in participating in any of the sponsored events must sign up as soon as possible to secure their place and be informed of fundraising details.
Other attractions at the event include a motor show and a truck show, live music, a golf simulator competition, an autograph bay, a funfair and a main arena with family entertainment. There will also be the chance to have an off-road experience in a Land Rover.
Inside the AECC, there will be a further range of events, many of which will also feature stars from Emmerdale.
Cast members have teamed up with John Lewis for a fashion show, and memorabilia from Emmerdale will be up for grabs at a charity auction.
Visitors can also enjoy an ice show by Ginger Cats of Glasgow and a "mascot" race, where mascots of charities and organisations will go head-to head on inflatable lanes. For those with enough energy left at the end of the day, there will be a black-tie dinner-dance at the AECC.
Tickets for the Emmerdale Extravaganza daytime event are available from the Aberdeen Box Office, priced £6 for adults and £3 for children. It runs from 9am on Saturday, June 9, until 6pm.
Tickets for the dinner-dance, at £65, are available from George Walker Event Management on 01467 628876. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance.
Donations to the Press and Journal Year of Giving Trust can be made to Bank of Scotland account number 06970307, sort code 80-73-31. If you are organising a fundraising event for one of our nominated charities, please call reporter Emma Christie on 01224 343225 or e-mail emma.christie@ajl.co.uk

From Press and Journal
Members of TV soap opera Emmerdale had a fantastic time at this year's charity fundraising event in Aberdeen.
They joined thousands of people to raise money for charity and enjoy the feast of family fun - including six-a-side football - at the Emmerdale Extravaganza.
Actor Tony Audenshaw, who plays Bob Hope in the show, said: "It's great fun - the football has been brilliant.
"We were very nervous because you don't want to make a fool of yourself.
"It's great there are a lot of people here and there are a lot more attractions."
Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon in the soap, added: "I haven't played football for ages but the fact I'm still standing here must mean something."
The stars joined in activities such as a fashion show and even a wing walk.
The other stars included Extravaganza star Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard), Adele Silva (Kelly Windsor), Tom Lister (Carl King), Verity Rushworth (Donna Windsor) and young Eden Taylor-Draper (Belle Dingle).
The Emmerdale Select footballers played three matches - drawing 2-2 with Weatherford, winning 2-0 against Tycom and again 2-0 while playing Aberdeen Ladies.
Adele Silva did a wing walk and Tom Lister wooed the women at the evening dinner-dance with his singing.
Adele, 26, said afterwards: "I had never done it before but I'm a bit of a daredevil on the fly so I was really looking forward to it.
"Everyone was saying, 'Are you not nervous?' But I wasn't. It was brilliant, really amazing."
One of the highlights of the Extravaganza was the lady drivers' challenge, where teams of four women took to the wheel of four heavy-duty vehicles.
Verity Rushworth showed her class at the event by driving a digger while wearing high heels.
Those with a head for heights took part in the wing walk or an abseil down the tower at the venue of the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Kate Synott, 43, fundraising manager for urological cancer charity Ucan, did the wing walk even though she admitted being scared of heights. "They took me up extra high," she said. "But I wasn't scared at all - it was absolutely awesome."
Afterwards, she then tackled the abseil down the 150ft-high AECC tower. She added: "It was the scariest moment of the day and I couldn't wait to touch the ground."
There was also bouncy castles, a funfair and lots of food outlets at the event, which has been running for seven years now.
Organiser George Walker said: "It went really well - the Emmerdale cast said it was the best one they had been to.
"We've got no idea how much money has been raised as we've yet to count up the ticket sales and we'll also get sponsorship money in over the next month.
"We're very optimistic about the total - we've had tremendous feedback from the public, the sponsors and the cast."
The event was sponsored by Qserv and was raising money for the Press and Journal's Year of Giving charity fund.
Our campaign aims to generate £500,000 for people in need up and down the country.
Half the money raised will be shared equally between five charities - Ucan, the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, Leukaemia Research, Maggie's Highlands Cancer Care Centre in Inverness - and Emmerdale Charities, which will donate money to a range of causes. The remaining £250,000 will be distributed between smaller charities and good causes in the north and north-east.
