WE DON’T LIKE CRICKET, OH NO … WE LOVE IT! Paul Nixon at Keswick Two days (May 12-13) of events at Keswick Cricket Club’s Fitz Park Ground (voted by Wisden the Loveliest Cricket Ground in the UK) will involve a dinner for 300 in a giant marquee on the ground on the Saturday night when England’s RU World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson will be the guest speaker, together with Paul Nixon. Then on the Sunday, the cast of Emmerdale will play a soccer match against a local team – possibly involving players from Carlisle Utd – to be followed by lunch in the marquee and then a 20/20 cricket match involving the players from Paul Nixon’s Leicestershire CCC and a County Select X1. The event is being sponsored by Fred Story and there will be lots of other fun events for the family on the Sunday. Proceeds from the event go to the Paul Nixon Benefit Fund, Leukaemia Research (a charity supported by Emmerdale) and the Air Ambulance. Paul Nixon’s wife Jennifer lost her father, David Young, when he suffered a heart attack on the Lakeland fells last summer. The Air Ambulance went to his assistance and Paul and Jennifer Nixon want to make a contribution to the organisation from his Benefit year. Tickets for the dinner and the lunch are available from Edgar Appleby, the treasurer of Keswick Cricket Club on Keswick (017687) 72882. Tickets for the black tie dinner on the Saturday are £50 while the lunch on the Sunday is £35 (provisional prices). Martin Johnson and Paul Nixon will speak at both dinner and lunch. The mc is Roger Dakin.
