Take that, you woolly pack...
Why Bernie and pals want footie revenge on Emmerdale Stars
SOAP stars will be left in a lather if Boro legend Bernie Slaven has his way.
Bernie is still smarting from his team’s 4-2 defeat last year at the hands of an Emmerdale XI in a Marske charity match for motor neurone disease.
So in this year’s re-match, Bernie’s out for revenge. He and Alastair Brownlee are currently compiling a team which should feature several well-known names including many of the Masters side that featured on Sky Sports.
And when the match kicks off at 2pm on Sunday, August 5, at Marske United’s Mount Pleasant ground, they’ll really mean business.
Tickets for the game, which is ticket only, are available now at £5 for adults, £2 children.
Proceeds will go to the Mike Findley MND fund, set up by the Marske councillor to raise cash for research. He was diagnosed with MND in 2005.
Bernie, who has often been ribbed on the Legends radio show for losing to “a bunch of soap stars”, says supporting the charity is the main thing.
But he admits last year’s defeat hurt.
He said: “I’m still a passionate guy and want to be a winner. Last year, we were comfortable until I was told at half-time we had to change half the team because people had paid to play. This year, if they’re going to change half a team, I hope it’s theirs!
“I want that trophy - let’s face it, we don’t get too many trophies at the Boro.
“But the main thing is it’s all for a good cause. Mike’s a great guy and the man who brought me to Middlesbrough, Willie Maddren, had the same condition. Without Willie, I might still be on the dole in Glasgow.”
Marske United chairman John Hodgson says lessons have been learned from last year’s match, which saw more than 2,000 pack into the ground.
This year’s main sponsor is Northern Vision, while Car Care and Corus have helped fund path widening work to improve disabled access.
John said: “We’ve always supported charity at Marske.”
Emmerdale’s team will feature Ben Freeman (Scott Windsor), Glenn Lamont (Ritchie Carter), Luke Tittensor (Daz Eden) and Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden), plus several stars from channel four's Shameless and Big Brother 6 winner, Anthony Hutton.
Tickets from Marske Post Office, Newsbox in New Marske, New Marske Post Office, Mike Findley on 07805 764212, Darren Spence on 07983 573432 or from Janet Pippen, 18 Hambleton Crescent, Marske, TS11 7JB (SAE, cheques payable to Marske United FC).
Ben has previously said that he was shocked by the response to last years match and that they'd never before played in front of such a big crowd. Because of that, he has this year promised to bring as many stars as he can get, including some of the female cast.
