From the West Yorkshire police site.
A charity football match is taking place in Wakefield to raise money for the Brennan Rooney appeal.
The match takes place at the Wildcats ground at Belle Vue on Sunday September 16, 2007.
Brennan Rooney is the son of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats star Jamie Rooney and suffers from Cerebral Palsy.
Work between West Yorkshire Police and the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats has been ongoing to divert young people away from crime and anti-social behaviour by using diversionary activities such as rugby league.
Youth and Schools Liaison Officer PC Mick Amos from the Wakefield Neighbourhood Policing Team has helped to organise the event and explains the background: “Over the past few months the Brennan Rooney Appeal has captured the imagination and hearts of the Wakefield community and the NPT has supported the appeal throughout.
“A key element of the campaign was the sale of a T-shirt to raise money to send 5 year old Brennan to Poland for specialist treatment.
“Remarkably, over 50 children have helped sell approximately 3000 t-shirts which have made over £15,000 profit. They worked as a team in all weather conditions to sell t-shirts before Wildcats games, at supermarkets and in Wakefield City Centre.
“On July 1st 2007 at the Wakefield Wildcats v Wigan game fans were urged to show their support for the appeal by wearing their Brennan Rooney T-shirts. Over 1200 fans wore the shirts along with players during the warm up session.
“In addition, several members of the Wakefield NPT wore the shirt under their fluorescent jackets. Many fans came up to us to shake our hands for joining the cause. It gave our team the opportunity to speak to the public on a different level through this joint cause. Forging these links with the community is a key objective of the NPT and will ultimately benefit the community in the future.
“A number of young people have made positive contributions such as a 10 year old girl who raised £450 through a sponsored swim and a 12 year old boy who conducted a sponsored silence raising £150.
“The match on September 16 will see the Emmerdale All Stars take on the West Yorkshire Police Team. The Emmerdale team regularly plays charity matches to help local children and organisations and we are grateful for their support.
“It’s an affordable and fun family day out, with a number of other activities available on the day for children of all ages. The Wakefield Neighbourhood Policing Team is committed to getting involved in community events and a key aim is for the public to know their local officer and understand their role, not just for enforcing law but interacting socially to break down barriers and gain trust. I hope the public enjoy the day and it is a success on all levels.”
Other celebrities making an appearance include stars from the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Leeds United, Bradford City, Leeds Rhinos, Shameless, The Match, Dream Team, Casualty, Ridings FM and Big Brother’s Chanelle.
