The spirit of Christmas will be coming to towns around Leeds in the coming weeks with the official switch-on of the festive lights.
The entertainment begins on Friday 14th November outside Pudsey Leisure Centre on Market Place as Emmerdale star Andy Devine (who plays Shadrack Dingle) will make a special appearance to help turn on the lights.
Andy will be joined at the show which starts at 6pm by Real Radio presenter Ian Brannan and Ronnie the Rhino, who will be bringing with him the Super League trophy retained by the Rhinos this year. There will also be a performance by Sukbir Kaur and SSC, who both impressed at this year’s citywide talent search ‘Breeze has Talent’.
The fun moves on to Morley on Thursday 20th November, with the action taking place outside the Town Hall on Queen Street from 6:00pm. Leeds United stars Frazer Richardson and Johnny Howson will be centre-stage, and they will be joined by Santa and his Christmas Elves along with Magic 828 presenters and Breeze Has Talent dancers Faye Cowdell and Victoria Winterburn.
The next day, Friday 21st November, the attention moves to Rothwell with celebrations beginning during the day at 11am in Rothwell Library on Marsh Street. Sherry and minced pies will be served while there will also be Santa in his Grotto, face-painting and story-time with Katy Ketchup.
The focus then turns to Commercial Street in the evening, where the show begins at 6pm. Joining presenter Jon Hammond on stage will be Emmerdale’s Chris Chittell (Eric Pollard), Mike Tomlinson, Santa, Ronnie the Rhino and Breeze Had Talent performers Caution.
The lights switch-on in Farsley takes place on Andrew Square from 6:00pm on Wednesday 26th November. The show presented by Alex Hall will feature an appearance by ‘Aladdin’ James Cohen, who will be starring in the Christmas pantomime at The Carriageworks off MIllennium Square from 4th December to 3rd January 2009. They will be joined by Santa on his sleigh, Ronnie the Rhino and Breeze Has Talent pair Sophie Downham and Ree’mell Phillips to officially start the run-up to Christmas.
The Kippax Christmas lights will be getting their big switch-on on the High Street from 6pm on Thursday 27th November. Presenters Jon Hammond and Alex Hall will introduce Santa, Ronnie the Rhino, Kippax Brass Band, the Larraine School of Dance and Breeze Has Talent’s Songbirds and Sally Hawkridge who will entertain the crowds.
Garforth’s switch-on takes place on Main Street from 6pm on Friday 28th November and will include performances by Ingi Hughes and Urban Soulja from Breeze Has Talent.
The final event is at Yeadon’s Market Square on Saturday 29th November. Starting at 5:45pm, the show hosted by Jon Hammond will see an appearance by by ‘Aladdin’ James Cohen, who will be starring in the Christmas pantomime at The Carriageworks off MIllennium Square from 4th December to 3rd January 20 Emmerdale actress Nicola Wheeler (Nicola Blackstock), Santa and Ronnie the Rhino, while there will also be a performance by Horsforth Leeds City Brass Brand. and a performance by Jeremy Davidson and Rhythms of Breeze Has Talent.
Leeds City Council Executive Member for Leisure Councillor John Procter said: "Following on from the success of the main city lights switch-on last week, we hope people will enjoy these smaller shows that really show the build-up to Christmas has begun.
