"A SAD GOODBYE"

SCENE 1 - OUTSIDE BUTLERS FARM.

(ANDY IS STOOD LOOKING OVER A WALL, KATHY COMES OVER TO HIM, WITH A CUP OF TEA)

Kathy: I thought you might want this.....

Andy: Thanks.....(TAKES TEA)

kathy: How long have you been up?

Andy: I couldn't sleep....Dad always used to love these fields...I used to watch him when he 1st took me in, and now look, I've got my own farm...

Kathy: He was very proud of you Andy. You and Robert, Victoria, Daz... you all have to be strong today, and be there for Diane and Annie....

Andy: The last time I saw Rob I wanted to kill him... so don't expect happy families kathy...

Scene 2 - The Woolpack

(Edna and betty are sat chatting , Marlon and Donna are stood by the bar, David & Eric enter and are greeted by Val)

Val: Have you got the orders of service?

Eric: We've just delivered them to the church, don't worry,...Ashley said the hearse is due in an hour... Er...How's Diane?

Val: She was up with the lark.... all she can think off is that Jack would've wanted more hymms... I've told her to stop thinking and all she needs is a brandy...

David: Nicola said she saw Robert arrive last night, he's staying next door...

Eric: The prodigal son returns ... It's a sad day .....

Betty: Poor Robert.... coming home to bury his father... life is so cruel.

(Diane enters)

Val: What are you doing? I said I had it all under controll pet...

Diane: I'm going stir crazy in there on my own, I need to be doing things... Marlon ... is the buffet,.....

Marlon: It's all done Diane ... Jake is going to lay it out later..

Diane: I just want things to go well, My Jack desrves the best send off this village has ever given anyone... and he's going to get it..(gets a brandy off bar) here's to you Jack love...(drinks it) god bless ya ....

Scene 3 - Annies Cottage.

Daz is ironing his shirt, Dolly is making some tea ...

Dolly: (shouts upstairs) Tea's ready love!...Do you want one Darren?

Daz: Thanks... I hate Ironing....

Dolly: Here ...let me do it... (takes over ironing) you clean your shoes love..... It was nice of Jake to let us all stay here....

Daz: This was Jack's house... and Annies before that....Jake thought it'd be nice for us to leave for the church from here... Is Sam gunna be long..I'm burstin....

Dolly: Oh,. yes.... I'm sorry (Shouts upstairs) Samual.... aren't you ready yet??

(Sam comes downstairs, still drying his hair)

Sam: Sorry ...I couldn't find a hairdryer... (daz goes upstairs as Dolly looks at Sam) what?

Dolly: Look at you...so grown up...Your Uncle Jack would've been so proud... now tuck your shirt in and get a cuppa down you whilst I finish this for darren....

Scene 4 - Outside The post office.

(Bob is busy taking boxes out of his car as Lisa and Zack appear)

Bob: Morning.... and how are we today?

Lisa: I'll be a lot happier after the funeral...Belle was in a right state last night...

Bob: I am just going to load these inside then I should get over to work and see If I can be any help... I feel a bit useless doing nothing to be honest..

Lisa: I dare say poor Diane will have a lot on her mind this morning hey?..... I don't no how I would cope If my Zach had ...well you know...suddenley like that...

zack: Don't worry 'bout me love..I'm not goin' anywhere...

(A taxi pulls up outside the B&B) (We see a pair of male legs get out) .....I don't believe it! ....Look who it is Lisa eh....

Ned: Zak Dingle.....How are you zak? ...(zack and Lisa go over to taxi and we see Ned Glover getting his case out of the taxi and paying the driver)

Zak: Aye, not too bad.. I guess you're here for jack....Well, nice to see you anyroad....

Ned: Our Roy rang me, and well, I thought I'd pay my respects like.... He was a good man was Jack Sugden....

Lisa: Is Roy not with you Ned?

Ned: He's still in Spain Lisa love...He's looking after the bar with his missus.... He told me too look up Kelly tho...

Zak: You'll have a job mate.... Come and get a pint ..There's a few things you need filling in on...


Scene 5 - The Vicarage.

Ashley: (shouting upstairs) Gabby...Daddy has to go soon ... (He goes into the kitchen where Laurel is making some toast and Bernice is talking to Doug) Well, she seems pretty unaffected by it all..which is good.

Laurel: (To bernice) We thought she might get upset, after..well, after Daniel... but she seems to be doing ok.

Bernice: It was very nice of you to put me up last night.... Mum seemed to have a house full.... and what with Robert arriving last night, I thought it best not to stay there... give them all time to get their heads in order for today...

Laurel: It's no problem you no... If you want to stay tonite? I am sure Diane will need some support after everyones goen back to Spain...and Gabby and Arthur love having you here...

Bernice: Oh well, if you're sure... I might just do that, thanks Laurel (Gets up) Now, I best go and check the flowers have arrived at the church.. Mum has enough on... and well, I need to keep myself busy...

(She exits)

Laurel: I hope you don't mind Ashley... It just seemed, well it seemed the right thing to do...

Ashley: Nonsence, It was a good idea...right I guess I better head to the church... the family will be setting off soon from The Woolpack...

Scene 6 - The Woolpack.

(Ned and Zack are stood at bar, Betty, edna, pearl and Lisa are sat at tables, jake is busy laying out the buffet, val is behind bar as Diane enters followed by Bernice.)

Bernice: Well, at least let Alan read a lesson or something, He only wants to help...

Diane: Aye, as do half the village... I had Eric Pollard banging on my door at seven O'clock this morning Bernice... I hadn't the heart to tell him what Jack thought of him! ...Oh god.... the orders of services....

Val: Stop worrying Di.... They are at the church, Eric took them down earlier......

Diane: I'm sorry ... I'm just a bit tetchy this morning..I'll be glad when today's over with...(See's Ned at bar) I don't believe it...

Ned: Hello Diane...(they hug)

Diane: Oh it is good to see you...Jack would be pleased ... Is Roy with you??

Ned: Not this time no, he had to stay in Spain.... I wanted to be here tho...Jack were a goor man, and a fellow farmer...

(Tony and Lee Naylor enter)

Diane: Aye that he was..... (sees Tony) and here's another old face you will no ...Tony, this is.....

Tony: Glover ....Ned Glover isn't it? ...you and your lad used to help out on my farm years ago aye.....Can I get you a drink?

Ned: Aye... a pint please...thing about livin' in Spain...no great beer like over here....

Tony: Very true ....Diane, can I get you a drink, to calm your nerves..looks like you could do with a brandy...

Diane: Thanks Tony but I best go shout Victoria...Annie and the others will be here soon...Poor little girl is in peices in her room... has been all night.. I just hope she gets thru today...

Scene 7 - Outside the garage.

(Debbie is cleaning a taxi as she does so, Chaz and Aaron are walking towards the church from main street, they see debbie and go to chat to her)

Chaz: You're keen...Any cleaner and you could eat you're dinner off that bonnet ...

Debbie: I just want it too be clean....(looks at aaron) you goin to a funeral or a rave?

Aaron: Not my fault I ain't got a suit .... I don't even no this Sugden fella....Don't see why I 'av to go at all....

Chaz: See Aaron luv...sometimes we have to do things for someone else...today It's for Diane, cos she used to employ your mam and for the Sugdens cos they are friends.... get it? good, now Debbie, does this skirt look a bit too,...well, you no, tartish for a funeral.

Debbie: Your hardley gunna go home and change are you....side's I don't think many people will be looking at you Chas....

(debbie looks over road , chas and Aaron do so too as Dolly, Daz, and Sam come out of Annies cottage and shut door and start to walk up road towards woolpack.)

Aaron: That Sam looks like a muppet....

Chaz: (clips him around head) Will you behave, it's a funeral Aaron, not a footie match ok... (to debbie) see you in there luv (chaz and Aaron walk off towards church)(we hear debbies mobile beep)

Debbie: Yes see you there ...(takes mobile from pocket, see's she has a text, we see it reads "Hi, Need to meet later....I no what you did to that copper!!" Debbie looks worried....

Scene 8 - A country lane...

(Natasha is riding Starfire, her horse along the lane ...as she does she see's the hearse and two cars behind approaching , so she stops to let it pass,,,, as it does she takes off her hat....)

(This scene harks back to the very 1st episode of emmerdale!! for you true fans out there)

Scene 9 - The Woolpack bar.

(Dolly and Kathy are sat chatting to Alan and Rodney. Val is behind bar and Andy, Sam and Daz are stood at bar..Victoria enters from behind bar)

Dolly: It does seem strange to be back after all these years ... so much has changed... I keep thinking Amos or Mr Wilks will appear at any moment.... I hear you had this place before Diane Alan?

Alan: yes, thats correct....It all got too much tho, but I was very sad to see it go...their's a lot of happy memories in here,

Kathy: Do you think I should go check on Annie? She should be here by now ...

Dolly: Ma will be ok kathy, she just wanted some time alone I think, to get her thoughts together...

(Victoria goes to sit with daz and Sam)

Victoria: I hope dads happy.....these heels are killing me...

Daz: Is that all you care about?......

Victoria: It's ok for you Daz, you can just relax... I have to walk around in these shoes all day and look like a fool.

Sam: (Looks at Daz) Girls!

(jake appears and Daz goes to help him with something)

Victoria: I saw you looking at Scarlett last night.... I could put in a good word ...if you want?

Sam: Scarlett?

Victoria: She's a bit posh like...but maybe you're into posh birds...Are you? or ....

Sam: I ain't into Scarlett ... but nice try Victoria..

(Sam goes to sit with his mum)

Victoria: what? I was just sayin you looked good together....

Scene 10 - Outside the B&B.

(Katie is walking down main street as Robert comes out of the B&B)

Katie: Good morning.... sleep well?

Robert: In there? ...no chance... I kept thinking about been in the old farmhouse, Dad, Sarah, Uncle Joe, ..... always busy in the feilds ... you know how it is....you've seen how hard Andy works ... and for what?

Katie: Jack loved his farm, and he loved his kids.... ok, I no he adopted Andy but your both his sons...and today you two have to put aside your differences and be men .

Robert: I just wish I'd had chance to say goodbye...

katie: We all do Robert, we all do (Katie hugs Robert, which is interupted by Natasha riding past on her horse)

Natasha: Morning katie.... Don't be rushing back to work this afternoon, we can cope I'm sure....

Katie: Thanks tash..... Oh, sorry where are my manners...Robert this is tash,..... natasha ...she owns Home Farm now.. tash, this is Robert Sugden...jack's son.

natasha: Oh, I didn't get to meet your Father but have heard so many stories about what a good man he was from katie and Zak Dingle... I'm very sorry for your loss..Katie I'll see you tomorrow ok...

(natasha rides off towards church lane)

Scene 11 - The graveyard.

(Eric is driving down the lane past graveyard when he spots Annie stood alone , looking distressed...so he stops.. gets out of the car and goes to where she is stood)

Eric: Annie? are you ok?

Annie: I wanted to check everything was ready for my boy.... I ... I don't want to say goodbye, but I have too don't I Eric?

Eric: We never want to say goodbye...but Jack, well.. he'll always live on in this village....

Annie: I just stood and looked around Eric, at the graves... at the names... Half the people I grew up with, my friends ... people that I loved are here Eric... Poor Seth, he were a good man... My Leonard, Mark and Rachel ...both too young to die...dear henry....david Glover...our Peg, Jackie... all taken well before their time, and all such good people Eric...

Eric: I know ..... It's a cruel world....

Annie: Then their's them that I dare say deserved what they got ... Tom King, he grew up with our Joe... he was always getting him into trouble.... and Chris Tate.. well, we all no how he turned out...

Eric: I often come here to talk to my Elizabeth... She didn't deserve to die that evening. She was taken from me, like your Jack was.... but they'll all be together, in heaven Annie...

Annie: I hope so Eric... I hope he's safe...my beloved son...

Eric: Now why don't I drive you to the Woolpack and get you a brandy hey? .... It's too cold out here to be standing about Annie, come on..

(They start to walk back to the car )

Scene 12 - Pear Tree Cottage

(Jimmy is getting last of the boxes out of a now empty pear tree, as Carl enters)

Carl: That the last of it?

Jimmy: Yes, few more boxes and that'll be it... place won't be ours anymore .... end of an era...

Carl: It's time to start afresh Jimmy... we have done it before, we'll be fine...

Jimmy: I just keep thinking what Dad would make of all this ,,, them two... buying all this... and in our house.. while we have to live like students in a pokey cottage.,...

Carl: Hey, do you mind...that pokey cottage is my home..our home now.. now come on...we'll go dump these off then go to the funeral.

Jimmy: And I'm still not sure It's a good idea to go to Jack's funeral carl....I mean we were never that close ....

Carl: We have to show our faces, The Sugdens have lived in this village for years Jimmy....we've lost enough lately, lets not loose our freinds too hey?(Jimmy picks up a box as does carl)

Scene 13 - Outside Pear Tree / The woolpack.

(Jimmy and Carl exit pear tree and go down path to main street as they do we see the funeral hearse pull up outside The Woolpack) (Bob and Terry are stood outside the Post office as it passes them, and Laurel is stood outside Vicarage) They walk towards woolpack )

Bob: Morning.... you ok?

laurel: As well as can be expected...Ashleys been on tenderhooks all night...

Terry: It's a tough day....I never thought I'd be goin to Jacks funeral...

Laurel: This village seems to have had so many loses lately .. (they pause by the hearse) when are we going to get some good times hey?

Bob: I see the Kings are moving out of Pear Tree today an all... Jack would've loved all this, them losing everything... he never did like them or what they stood for....

Laurel: It's so sad....(laurel starts to cry and Bob puts arm around her) Oh..i'm sorry, It's all just getting a bit too much...

Terry: hey, don't worry Laurel...come on , lets get inside and get a drink down us... That'll do the trick..

Scene 14 - Home Farm Kitchen.

(Mark is sat reading paper, natasha enters carrying horse gear)

Mark: And where were you? I woke up and you'lld gone...

Natasha: I went for a ride, I couldn't sleep ....(goes to pour a cup or coffee) Oh I saw Katie in the village...

Mark: Oh It's the funeral today isn't it.....

Natasha: I met Andy's Brother...Robin .... I think, seemed a bit of a dark horse .... katie seemed pleased to see him tho...

Mark: Tasha!

Natasha: What?

Mark: You no....no more matchmaking where Katie is envolved, we agreed...Now, how about you go slip into something a bit more jazzy and we will go into Leeds for lunch.

Natasha: Do you think we should've sent some flowers? to Diane? ...I mean I no we don't no her that well, but, well It always pays to have the local publican on your side ...

Mark: Tasha..IF our plans for this place coem off Diane won't be on our friends list for much longer, along with half of the village I should imagine... They are going to hate us, we have to accept that darling..

Tasha: Yes, yes you're right... I just hate all this secrets and deceit... It's a nice place, I feel at home here...I don't want that spoilt....

Scene 15 - Outside the back of the Woolpack.

(Daz places a wreath on against the wall, we see many other bunches of flowers and wreathes too. Diane is stood watching him and looking at the wreathes)

Daz: Andy says we should be settin' off soon ...

Diane: He's right... Go get Annie and victoria , and I'll meet you by the cars 'round the front...

Daz: are you gunna be ok? I can wait ...

Diane: I'll be fine Daz.... Ur a good lad...jack would be sooo proud.

Daz; He were more of a dad than Billy ever was....

Diane; I was half expectin' Billy to turn up today...

Daz: like a bad smell.... He better not... I hate him for what he did, nearly splitting you an' Jack up....

Diane: Jack was a stoubern old fool sometime, that was why I married him, and why I am gunna seee he gets the send off he deserves pet.

(Daz hugs Diane, and then goes in woolpack) (Marlon appears from door)

Diane: Half of these people I've never heard off, farmers... I dare say half of 'em Jack couldn't do with either...

Marlon: Annie said there's a few faces here she didn't think were still alive...

Diane: It's strange isn't it Marlon? Death can unite a community... I mean look at the cards, Theres one from a farmer in Robblesfield.... and another from Kim Tate in Peru. All of them tho, grieving for my husband...

Marlon: Jack would be happy you no.....and he'll be watchin' down on us... with my Tricia....

Diane: It's time isn't it? ...come on then, lets go do this.... let's go say goodbye to jack ...

(Diane and Marlon walk to front of Woolpack where Annie is gettin into one or the cars with Dolly and Victoria) Hearse sets off , with car following and behind walk Diane, eric, Andy, Robert, daz, marlon, Zack, Sam Alan, terry, katie, Mick ,Matt and others)
