Charity Match - Police, Wakefield Wildcats, Soap Stars
Police, Wildcats and soap stars in charity match
Police, Wakefield Wildcats and soap stars are taking to the pitch in a charity football/rugby match to raise money for the Adam Watene Fund and the Wakefield Wildcats Community Trust Charity.
The event will take place on Sunday January 11th 2009 at the Wakefield Wildcats, Belle Vue Stadium, Doncaster Road, Wakefield. The kick off is at 2.30pm and will see the Emmerdale Allstars take on the Wakefield Wildcats.
Event organisers, PC Mick Amos, Wakefield District Division Youth and Schools Liaison Officer and Davide Longo, Wakefield Wildcats Community Trust Manager, are hoping the event will be a huge success both on and off the field.
The first half will see current Wildcat stars trying their hand with a different shaped ball playing 45 minutes of football before reverting to their natural game playing 40 minutes of tag rugby.
Entry will be £5 for everyone and proceeds will be split between the two charities.
The Adam Watene Fund has been set up to help his family as they attempt to rebuild their lives following his sudden death in October. Proceeds will be sent to Adam’s partner Moana and two children Arana and Ena in New Zealand.
In addition some of the money will be used by the charity to help local children.
The Wakefield Wildcats Community Trust Charity promotes participation and opportunities in sport and physical activity at a local level. Its aim is to provide facilities for sports and other recreational events for people who need them due to their age, social or economic circumstances. The charity also looks to improve social welfare and life in the local community in general including helping children and young people to develop educationally through local projects.
PC Mick Amos said: “As Youth and Schools Liaison Officers we deliver an extensive range of resources and projects for young people, from Safer Schools partnerships and youth engagement, to crime prevention and safety as well as developing close relationships with schools and other agencies. As a supporting artist in Emmerdale I have also played in their team, run by Glenn Lamont, raising money for good causes up and down the country.
During the past few years Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Community Programme has made a significant and positive contribution to the learning culture in the local Wakefield District community. The department has four full time members of staff who regularly deliver assemblies, dance programmes, coaching programmes, holiday clubs, summer camps and touch rugby leagues. I have seen Davide Longo’s energy and enthusiasm in the community and believe that we can work hand in hand together to deliver positive messages and projects.
Adam Watene was an excellent rugby league player on the field and role model off it, with his tireless involvement in the Wildcats Community programmes and his role as Deputy Mayor of Wakefield's Consort. He personally helped me walking from Wakefield to Castleford to raise money for a young 16 year old girl who needed help to save her sight. I hope as many supporters of all clubs can attend the game to raise as much money as possible for Adam’s family and for local children”.
Community Manager of the Wakefield Wildcats, Davide Longo, said: “Adam was a real nice guy who gave the Wildcats community department the support and enthusiasm which young people thrive off; he was the perfect role model on and off the field. Wakefield Wildcats Community Trust and it’s staff are fully focused on delivering programmes which improve positive lifestyles around health and safer communities. The partnership between West Yorkshire Police and Wakefield Wildcats is already starting to bear fruit with the introduction of a controlling behaviour and crime reduction assembly being presented district wide”.
Playing in the Emmerdale team will be Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden), Ayden Callaghan (Miles De Souza), James Baxter (Jake Doland), Ben Freeman (Scott Windsor), Glenn Lamont (Richie), James Hooton (Sam Dingle), Luke Tittensor (Daz Sugden), Elliott Tittensor (Carl Gallagher – Shameless), Luke Bailey (Casualty / Waterloo Road) and others to be revealed during the coming weeks from programmes such as Big Brother and Shipwrecked. The Wildcats team will be taken from the full playing squad.
Prior to the kick off the Wildcats will host their annual Junior Wildcats Open Day beginning at 10.30am. Members will be able to meet Wildcats players, collect autographs and photos. They will each be given an autograph book and pen in which to save the 2009 team’s signatures. Children will also have the chance to present one of the players with their 2009 shirt via a raffle. Emmerdale stars will be available for autographs immediately after the game.
Special guests will include a local band and the Wakefield Wildcat Dolls. A corporate hospitality package is also on offer.
Tickets for the event will be available shortly via the Wildcats website www.wakefieldwildcats.co.uk.
