Ok.
It's 2009 and it is up to you to decide what has happened.
What has happened to your favourite characters.
Woolpack:
Now owned by Syd and Chastity, who have since married and had two children, while Chas' son Aaron is in a young offenders institue for arson. He burnt down the garage three years earlier which had killed Robert Sugden and Katie Addyman after they had resumed their affair.
Alan and Diane went into business in 2006, which saw Diane become the co-owner of the B+B, after Alan decided he wanted to spend more time with Shelly, his new wife. Sadly Alan passed away in 2007, and Diane couldnt afford to run the B+B without a partner, until her ex-husband Jack Sugden won the pools andhe decided to become Diane's business partner.
After tracking down Gloria, Eric decided not to press charges against her for stealing his money, and instead they returned to Emmerdale where they bought Viv's Tea Rooms after Viv went bankrupt and had to sell off her businesses. She began working for Nicola Blackstock who's cleaning business went through the roof.
Nicola married Simon in 2005, after he proposed to her at an Ice Rink when she sprained her ankle. They married at a Yorkshire Ice Rink on Ice Skates, even Ashley wore them...
Steph Stokes bought Eric out of the Factory and ended up closing it down and reopening it as a Salon. She named it 'Tricia's' and after patching up her friendship with Shelly, they ran it together. However in 2006, Steph was charged with assult after she beat the living daylights out of Chloe, and was jailed for 8 months. Upon her release, she vowed never to get into trouble again....
Marlon and Louise eventually found love...with each other and moved into Edna's old cottage, after Edna decided to take the plunge and marry Len...meanwhile Ashley and Laurel Thomas pondered the thought of Ashley having the snip after having triplets in 2005 then two more children followed in 2007 and 2008.
Anyone care to add more to this?

Zoe decided to move away from Home Farm in 2004, and back to the village. She returned to herself, after her personality change in 2004 was discovered to be a brief return of her mental illness.
Zoe sold off part of the Tate empire to Rodney, and sold the house to the King Family. She then moved into Pear Tree Cottage (where Debbie and Charity used to live before the trial). Zoe returned to work at the vets, but found it difficult to work and find someone to look after Jean.
Zoe eventually hired a new, male nanny who turned out to be gay. He grew close to one of the King brother's, who also came out. While Zoe was out clubbing with the nanny, she bumped into a woman called Kathryn, who turned out to be Rodney's niece. Kathryn moved in with her uncle. She and Zoe gradually grew closer also, but Kathryn had issues with her sexuality. But there also seemed to be something strange about Kathryn, something mysterious.
Around early December 2004, Kathryn started getting mysterious calls. And then on December 25th 2004, Kathryn and Zoe woke up together. Kathryn disappeared and we later saw her car parked in a lay by. We then saw a jeep pull up, and someone steeped out and sat in beside Kathryn. The camera revealed it to be Kim Tate, who has since went bankrupt and is blackmailing Kath so that Kath can get her hands on Zoe's money, Kim can kill Zoe and Kim can then get her hand's on the Tate money.
The story continued, with Zoe and Kath getting closer and closer, but Zoe being puzzled by Kath's sometimes strange behaviour. Then on Valentine's Day 2005, in a one hour special Kim returned to kill Zoe, after Zoe had signed over all the money. Kim shot Zoe, but was interuppted by Kath. As Kathryn fought with Kim, a shot was fired at the end of the episode, and both women fell into a heap.
In the following episode it was revealed that Kath had been shot. Zoe woke up, having passed out from the pain of her shot in the arm, but it was too late. Kath was nearly dead. Kath told Zoe she was sorry, but died before she could tell Zoe that Kim was the person who had snuck up behind Zoe and shot her.
Kim disappeared.

To be honest, I don't think any of the above characters have the potential to be in the soap in five years time! If you have a look at the cast list for 1999 (would be great if someone could find one?) and I bet most of them are gone!

Well 17 of the cast first appeared before 1999 (if you count Zak, Betty and Seth). Also Emily first appeared on the 5th May 1999, so she'd have appeared over five years ago, making it 18.

I wonder how many I've left behind Obviously characters will leave over the period of five years, and new characters will arrive, so it's basically a healthy turnover. Most of the characters we have today though have either little potential left, or they've been in the show a long time.

Seth has sadly passed away, the whole village walked down the main street with his coffin which proudly held a jar of Ephriam Monk.
Betty married Gerald a wealthy businessman, she persuaded him to move from his penthouse in Leeds which was taken from its ultra modern state and Betty-ised, to the village where he bought out Home Farm and all the Tate empire from Zoe Tate who decided that seen as she had lost Christopher back to Charity and Jean to Scott in a custordy battle when their marriage split after a freak snowboarding accident where Scott became paralyzed, started to lose his hair a bit and only drink whiskey (sound familar?) she thought he reminded her too much of her brother! So Zoe decided to give the then 14 year old Christopher who was a rebel at his grammar school and already fathered a child to his council estate girlfriend, all his money in a trust fund; give him a cottage in the village to come home to in the holidays, and she jetted off for a new life in Sitges.
Hope's Cafe and Flat is now owned by Marlon and Emily. The cafe is run by Marlon and the shop by Emily, Marlon lives above in the flat with the wheel-chair bound, balding, whiskey maniac: Scott "Chris" Tate-Windsor.
Andy and Donna have married and got two kids at the age of 24 and 23. Andy has made a success of Butler's Farm, now renames Emmerdale Farm and Donna is happy to be the farmers wife who cooks and cleans for all their guests. The farm which owns most of the surrounding farms aswel has an anual turn over of £12m. Andy has most of the village working for him and is in strict competition with Rodney over vineyards. Andy has replaced the Defender with a Range Rover and Donna occasionaly swans into the village in her convertible.
Edna and Jarvis have married and turned their houses into a house which is very grand. Edna has given up her faith and is often seen up at Home Farm with Betty swilling champagne and playing golf in the custom made 9holer.

well we have various scattered cast lists from 1972 to 2002 and of course current at www.emmerdale.org/emmerdale/cast/index.htmlthere are cast lists for 1997 and 2002 but none for 1999. It would be interesting perhaps for someone to do one? The thing that interests me that most of the characters that came in under Kieran Roberts (1998-2001) are gone (admittedly a lot by choice). However there are a lot still about from before Kieran ever arrived as producer. There are a lot of cast members since Kieran who seem to be going no where fast. It also interests me that virtually all the things that Kieran Roberts did storyline wise and characterisations and situations for the long term to dismantle the fundamentals of Emmerdale, have been now reversed. ie more comedy has been reintroduced (something that Kieran's era often missed on). The Dingles have gone back to their routes as more comic rouges ie Shadrach (remenicent of Nellie, and the original Butch, Zak etc), than just daft capers for the sake of it. Kieran Roberts era sidelined Alan and Terry for so long when they removed them from the pub and didn't give them much else to do. However in the last year or so we have seen them more and more brought back into stories and be at the centre of them too without play second fiddle. The Tate empire was disnantled under Kieran Roberts he has gone on record as saying he had found the Tates had become boring. Of course now all the Tates bar Zoe have left so necessity has required that they be reshaped. However Zoe is still hanging in there with her Tate Empire. And we now have a new business Empire - The Kings. The biggest change that went on under Kieran's reign was the disappearence of farming. He is starting to deny it but it is quite clear when watching his episodes on Plus, Kieran Roberts era was responsible for the disappearing animals. However now in the last year or two we have seen the non farming reversed and more and more we are seeing animals again in Emmerdale. So who knows what the future will bring in Emmerdale in 5 years time as things seem to go round in circles. The names might be different but the stories and characters could well be very similar.
