Chapter 10
I left Dad’s feeling elated at meeting his for the first time. I had no idea at all as to what the future held for us, but for the first time in my life, I felt – complete. I drove home, smiling to myself, feeling very happy with myself. I could not wait to tell my Mum about my meeting with Dad – God that felt good saying that and loving it -. I just hoped that it would not stir up any bad and upsetting memories for her. I finally reached our house, - it was just a modest 3 bedroom house, nothing like Dad’s his was huge compared to ours, - got out of the car and went in. I found Mum in the living room. I was careful to make sure my stepfather was not anywhere in the house, before I started to tell her of my meeting.
‘Hi Mum,’ I started.
She was reading a mag, from which she looked up from as I entered the room and smiled when she saw me, and greeted me in her normal way:
‘Hi darling, are you ok?’
‘Yes,’ I answered, and then cautiously asked, ‘Are we on our own, is Geoff here?’
Mum looked curiously at me with that, especially calling Geoff by his name, as she knew I had been to meet my real father for the first time.
‘No, Geoff is not here, we are on our own, I take it your visit to Tom’s – your Dad’s went well?’ She asked, putting down her mag, to give me her full attention.
I sat down next to her.
‘Yes!’ I confirmed.
I was really unsure whether to start the conversation regarding my visit, as I did not want to bring any unhappy memories up for Mum, but at the same time, I was really excited and dying to tell her my news.
Mum, looked at me, smiled as though she knew what my thoughts were, and gently touched my hand.
‘Well, go on, tell me how it went!’ She encouraged me.
I just looked at her. She frowned at my expression on my face.
‘What’s the matter?’ She asked.
‘I’m sorry Mum, I am so excited at meeting Dad for the first time and wanting to tell you, I never thought about it stirring up some painful memories for you!’ I told her.
She smiled at me, and squeezed my hand again.
‘Go on’, She said, encouraging me to carry on, which was her all over, putting people’s feelings and happiness before her own.
I was still unsure, but after my hand was gently squeezed for the 3rd time, I began to tell her my amazing story. She just sat there, listening, not interrupting at all, always with a smile on her face. I thought it must have been hard for her to hear all about her ex-lover though. I decided to leave out about Dad’s new girlfriend.
‘And how are the boys’? She asked after I had finished.
I smiled at her, her thinking of others –as usual.
‘Dad’, I said carefully shrugging at my usage of the word.
Mum noticed my uncertainty at my using the word Dad. Once again, she smiled and squeezed my hand.
‘It’s ok to use the word, but just be careful where your…stepfather is!’ She told me, this time herself being careful at the usage of the word ‘Stepfather’.
I nodded, and continued.
‘Dad showed me a photo of them and said they hadn’t changed much, so I presume they are ok too!’ I answered.
I then went onto finish off my story, and then a thought hit me. Mum noticed this.
‘What?’ She asked.
‘Well, even though we’ve met and Dad has said he wants to see me again, what happens if that was in the heat of the moment, and when the cold light of day dawns on him and the novelty has worn off, he decided against it?’ I said wondering, the realisation of what may happen hitting me. Mum looked at me.
‘If I know your Dad and he hasn’t changed that much, which from what you have told me he hasn’t, now he knows you exist, that’s it, you are a part of the King family, he won’t allow his daughter to break free now!’ Mum assured me.
I looked at her as I digested her words. I nodded.
‘His house is quite big, infact fit for a King!’ I quipped.
Firstly, Mum gave me a look at my attempt at a joke, and then her face changed slightly.
‘What?’ I asked.
‘Your Dad is quite well off!’ She told me.
I looked at her enquiringly.
‘You say that as though you mean, I don’t know, wealthy?’
Mum again looked at me. She gave me a look as though she was confirming what I had said. I frowned.
‘What, you mean rich?’ I asked cautiously.
She nodded.
‘Extremely, which is why he lives in a big house – he lived in a huge house when we were together, he has a few hugely successful businesses!’ She told me.
‘Was he successful then when you two were together?’ I asked.
‘Yes, he was, well starting to be, so he will be now. Now you are in the business profession, you will hear a lot of King and Sons!’ She replied.
I suddenly smiled. Mum noticed it.
‘What?’ She asked, smiling back.
‘I was just thinking, I wonder what Nicci Kenson would say now if she knew who my family was.’ I smiled.
Mum, smiled back, and then said:
‘Just don’t forget what I have taught you, about money!
‘I won’t!’ I promised her.
How could I forget all she had taught me, given what she had done for me, after her and Dad had split up? She had always given me things that I needed, though I was not spoilt, which is why Nicci Kenson, had always ‘bullied’ me regarding her family’s ‘wealth’. I never was reckless with money, as Mum had taught me not to be, and that life was not all about money. Suddenly, the ring of my mobile jolted me back to reality. I picked it up and frowned.
‘Who is it?’ Mum asked me, after seeing the frown appear on my face.
‘I don’t know, I don’t recognise the number!’ I answered.
I answered the phone.
‘Hello, Katie, it’s me, your Dad!’ Came Dad’s voice, which was quite a shock.
‘Dad,’ I exclaimed, ‘Hi, I didn’t expect to hear from you just yet!’
As soon as I said the word ‘Dad’, Mum’s expression changed. It must have been like a blast from the past for her.
‘Yeah, sorry love’, His voice began, ‘But I have told the boys about you, and they want to me you, and I decided there’s no time like the present, so is there any chance you can come over for a bite to eat and meet them at the same time, like killing two birds with one stone, so to speak?
That caught me off hand, I had not expected for it to happen that quickly, after all I had just met my Dad for the first time that day. It seemed a lifetime from when he spoke to when I finally answered.
‘Er, I suppose so,’ I began and then he interrupted me.
‘Are you busy, if you are, that’s ok?’
‘No, I am not busy, just surprised it is happening so quick, that’s all, and I am a little nervous!’ I admitted.
‘Yes, sorry about that’ His voice answered, but I could hear the disappointment creeping in, after I said that I was nervous about going to meet my brothers.
‘It’s ok’, I told him, ‘I will be there, what time do you want me to come?’
‘How about this afternoon, say for about 3pm and then we will have a bite to eat?’ He suggested.
I didn’t like to say no, I knew it was only nerves anyhow, so I said:
‘Yeah, ok no problem, I will be there!’
‘Excellent!’ He said, the excitement evident in his voice.
We said our goodbyes and then I put down the mobile and quickly thought about our conversation. Mum looked at me.
‘What’s happened?’ She asked, looking at the worried look on my face.
‘Dad wants me to go and meet the boys later and have something to eat with them also, he is quite keen, which is why he has rang so quick after our initial meeting!’ I told her.
‘But you are nervous?’ She asked.
I looked at her.
‘Yeah, I am, I mean I knew I was going to have to meet them, and it would be scary the first time, but I guess I didn’t expect it to be so soon!’ I replied, still looking scared.
‘Why didn’t you say, you had something on?’ She asked.
‘I didn’t think quick enough!’ I answered.
‘That’s your father all over, something new, he’s excited and so he wants to show it off to the world!’ She said, recalling how eager Tom was when he was excited about something like this.
I just looked. Mum could see how frightened I was.
‘Would you like me to come with you, to help you feel less frightened – I guess I could see the boys again for the first time in such a long time!’ She asked.
I immediately looked at her. That would mean she would be seeing her ex lover for the first time for 17 years, and that would surely bring back some very painful, very hurtful memories?
‘But that means you will be seeing dad for the first time, since you guys split up, it is going to be really hard for you Mum!’ I told her.
She looked at me.
‘I know, but it’s going be a strange experience for you too, so we may as well face it together!’ She replied.
I smiled, that was so like her, to help others regardless of her own feelings. I must admit though, I felt better at the thought of my Mum being by my side.
‘Ok’, I said, ‘I have to say I feel better with you by my side, I guess I had better ring Dad and let him know you will be there!’ I said, reaching for my phone again.
I phoned Dad and told him that Mum would be accompanying me, as she was looking forward to seeing the boys again. His voice sounded as though his heart had missed a beat at that news, but the excitement also petered through at the thought of seeing her again.
‘Well, that put paid to your initial worry of whether in the cold light of day, he would still want to know you! Mum said.
I smiled, true, she was right as always.
In Chapter 11, how will Charity react to the news of Tom having a daughter and also how will the meeting between Katie and her new brothers go, and how will Tom feel about seeing Cathy again?
Enjoy!
