Chapter 1 – Court
Scarlett King got up earlier than usual that morning but she couldn’t sleep and the nightmares were just getting worse and worse as the court day approached. There were several sleepless nights and disturbed routines because of the nightmares. Scarlett was looking a bit less like herself each day with the amount of sleep she was losing.
Carrie had picked Scarlett up on it but her daughter was too fixated with the trial. It was a complete nightmare.
The days leading up to the trial had been a nightmare too and Carrie, her mother, had been trying to get her to stay away from the Kings but of course she wasn’t having any of it especially as Matthew and Carl had only just recently accepted her. She didn’t want to lose the relationship she had spent weeks trying to build with them. She knew her mother was only looking out for her but Scarlett was 15 she could manage. And nothing was going to keep her away from court today.
It was the morning of the trial and everyone was particularly nervous the village. She wasn’t the only one up this early, she observed as she looked out of the window. She saw Edna walk a little way up to Home Farm, shake her head and turn away again. Zak and Lisa Dingle did the same thing.
Scarlett was feeling a bit enraged that these people actually thought her brothers had done it. It wasn’t fair. But that was for the court decide and she knew she would have to trust them to prove themselves innocent.
She went to get a shower and washed her hair quickly. Since she wasn’t going to school but attending the trial she needed to look her best mind you she was going to have to sneak out of the house to pretend to go to school when in fact she was getting a taxi to the trial.
This of course meant going to the trial in her uniform but she brought a smart outfit to change into once there. She quickly put her school uniform on and headed downstairs to where Carrie was making breakfast.
“Mum? I’m going to get off to school early today…is that okay?”
Carrie looked round at her in surprise. “You’ve still got another half hour…”
“Revision” was all Scarlett needed to say and her mum gave her an understanding nod.
She allowed her daughter to leave not knowing where Scarlet was really going.
Once outside Scarlett began a brisk walk to the taxi service and spotted Debbie Dingle waiting for her.
“You managed to get away then?” Debbie asked, admiring this girl’s cunning. Scarlett nodded.
“Revision’s an easy excuse.” she simply said and got into the back of the taxi. Debbie climbed into the driving seat.
“You might wanna change, they’re not going to let you in dressed as a schoolgirl. If I go slow you can dress in the taxi.” Debbie instructed and set off.
“Thanks” Scarlett said appreciatively and began to change.
“No problem.” Debbie said concentrating on the road.
It didn’t take long for Scarlett to change and soon she was wearing smart black pants, a white blouse and a black jacket. She slung her bag over one shoulder and waited until they got to caught.
Once they arrived Scarlett stepped out nervously and found herself outside the courthouse. She paid Debbie and as the taxi drove off she headed into the building having been approved by the guards.
She soon found the courtroom and decided to sit as close to the dock as possible which was right behind it. She sat down and tightened her grip on her bag as she awaited the defence team. She quickly turned her phone off and looked ahead of her trying not to be frightened.
Today she would either keep or lose her brothers.
