Deena Payne has offered her support to a charity trying to find a cure for the life-threatening disease affecting a three-year-old boy from Adel, Leeds. Deena decided to help after reading about Joel Ingleby in the Yorkshire Evening Post. Joel suffers from Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) – a cancer-like disease which spreads through the bloodstream.
Deena has become the patron of LEAP, the fundraising committee set up by Joel's parents Jane and Howard. Joel undergoes chemotherapy every night to treat his rare illness and is the only youngster in Leeds to suffer from LCH.
LEAP's first official fund-raising event will be held on Sunday, June 13, at Leeds Grammar School when Deena will be joined by many of the Emmerdale cast, including her on-screen son, Ben Freeman, who plays Scott. Ten members of the cast will play in a celebrity five-a-side football tournament against eight amateur teams from North Leeds between noon and 5pm.
The event will be kicked off by the Emmerdale Juniors team, featuring Luke Tittensor who plays Darren, Danny Webb, who plays Aaron and Patsy Kensit's son, James
The family day out will be attended by Brewster Bear courtesy of Yeadon Stoops. There will also be bouncy castles, a slide, trampolines, a magician, drama workshop, stalls, food and bar.
Auctioneer Howard Lee will sell autographed football shirts from Leeds United and Brazilian stars and there are loads of prizes.

This was an excellent event on Sunday and perfectly organised by the Leap committee with the help of Deena and her friends. Plenty of the Emmerdale cast were there to sign autographs and play football:
Deena Payne Lorraine Chase Verity Rushworth Jane Cox Hannah Midgeley Julie Higginson Kate McGregor James Hooton Ben Freeman Kelvin Fletcher Danny Webb Luke Tittensor Glenn Lamont Anthony Lewis
One of the Emmerdale teams (starring James & Kelvin) won the afternoon's football tournament and got medals for their efforts.
Let's hope the same event is on again next year.
