A North-east business will be helping today's Emmerdale fun day at Banchory really go with a bang.
With the major cancer charity event on track to bring in thousands of visitors - and pounds - Tartan Tanks has rolled up another big attraction for the programme, in the massive shape of a Mk2 Chieftain main battle tank.
Weighing in at 55 tonnes, the military monster might have posed a major logistical problem for organisers of the Emmerdale Extravaganza going ahead at the Inchmarlo Golf Centre. It will be raising cash for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
Aberdeen-based James Jack Lifting Services was already providing the crane for the zip slide attraction, and immediately offered to transport the tank its Methlick base to Deeside.
"It was a great gesture," said trust fundraising and event organiser George Walker.
Yesterday, the company hauled the tank to the Inchmarlo venue, the combined weight of the military machinery and its transporter rig totalling some 100 tonnes.
The Chieftain is the biggest piece of hardware in a fleet of ex-military vehicles, from scout cars to amphibious trucks, operated by Tartan Tanks on part of the historic Haddo Estate. The business provides corporate challenge and team building days out.
Managing director Iain Adair said the set-up was delighted to be involved in the cancer charity fundraiser.
"Members of the public will be invited to buy a ticket during the day, with the winner taking to the tank turret to fire the gun to set off a grand finale fireworks display", explained Mr Walker.
The 30ft gun has actually been deactivated, as the tank was a museum exhibit before joining the off-road venture, but pyrotechnics experts have wired up a simulated tank shot, that will appear to blow up the Famous Grouse Giant Whisky Cocktail fireworks.
Today's programme - sponsored by the Press and Journal and the Edrington Group, owners of the Famous Grouse group - will get under way with live band performances at 10am.
Emmerdale cast members, led by soap stars Chris Chittell and Julia Mallam, will arrive half-an-hour later in a parade of vintage vehicles and motorcycles.
The fundraising action will take in everything from a wing walking spectacle to 700ft zip slide, 10k run and archery, golf and cricket, to a funfair, craft and trade stands to bouncy castles and array of family entertainment. Admission and parking are free. First Bus will be offering a free bus service to the scenic venue from outside Banchory police station.
