CELEBRITY CHARITY CRICKET MATCH

World Cup winning side will be one of the many Celebrities from the sports and entertainment world to take part in a fundraising cricket match in aid of breast cancer.

The match is to be held at Beckwithshaw Cricket
Club on the 8th of August will see a range of stars including :-

Breast cancer is one of the major killers amongs women in the world today. All proceeds raised
from the event will be split between St Gemma's
Hospice and Breast Cancer Care

To prepare for a charity cricket game, sports editor RICHARD NEALE enlisted the help of two experts from Beckwithshaw CC – and found he really needed it



AS a batsman faces the opening ball of an innings what's going through his mind?
I've no idea what the answer to that question is, but as the sports editor of the Harrogate Advertiser series facing a practice ball in the Beckwithshaw CC nets there's only one thing going through my mind – don't get hit!
It may not be the England test team, but getting the call-up to play for Stuart Holberry's all-stars side against an Emmerdale XI is a serious business in my book.
So with kit bag in tow, I set out to learn a few tricks of the trade from two of Beckwithshaw's stars – Aussie bowler Nathan Rimmington and batsman Steve Walmsley.
Despite Walmsley's confidence that being a left-handed batsman works in my favour – "the bowler has to readjust to you, rather than the other way round," he tells – I'm still not one hundred per cent comfortable having a little red missile thrown at me. No matter how much padding I have on.
I flail miserably at a fairly simple ball and see the look of despair on the face of Holberry – he can see a big defeat on the cards.
Things get worse as we set up a picture for the photographer. I have enough trouble hitting the ball with the middle of the bat, never mind 'edging one' to the makeshift slip cordon behind me.
It's obviously time for Walmsley to step in and offer some much-needed advice.
"You've got to think about getting everything behind and just rely on your ability to hit the ball rather than worrying about it hitting you," he tells.
"Start by getting yourself and your eyes level. I wear a helmet and try to line that up with the top of the sightscreen. That means I can see the line the ball takes and it helps keep me stood up straight.
"Then you have to keep your head up and move your foot to the pitch of the ball. That way the ball will either hit your bat or your pad."
Following the advice I follow a delivery and – miracle of miracles – make a connection. The ball, however, flies in the air where it would have been straight down the throat of a gully.
"Don't lean back," chips in Rimmington who is used to seeing batsmen from the other end of the wicket.
"If you lean back the ball will go in the air and it'll be caught. Try to keep everything down. I also find it helps to keep my hands tight to my body."
At 21 years old, Rimmington is set for big things, having just been offered a full contract in a strong Queensland side.
He's used to receiving help from some of the old and very experienced heads in the Queensland side, and is happy to offer this raw recruit some words of advice on the art of bowling.
"Keep your front arm high – as if you're picking bananas from a tree," is his first trade secret.
"Some bowlers use their height or run-up to generate pace and bounce as well, but keeping your arm high gives you that little bit extra height.
"Make sure you keep everything aimed at the batsman – your whole body. And keep your head still as well, looking down the wicket."
To say I'm good at bowling would be massively overstating the case, but the ball will generally get down to the other end – even if it takes a while and doesn't hit the wicket.
However, bowling quickly right at the stumps may not necessarily be the way to go, tells Rimmigton.
"I prefer to play the quicker bowlers rather than spinners or slower bowlers as the ball comes off the bat better," he confides.
"And at our level bowling at the stumps isn't normally any good. It's better to have the batsman reaching out and nicking one just outside the line."
After this expert training there's something else going through my mind now – bring on the soap stars!

Chris Chittell, better known as Emmerdale's Eric Pollard will be bringing his soap celebrities to take on an all-star sports side including footballers Stuart McCall and Peter Beagrie and rugby players Jon Callard and Iain Balshaw.
With all proceeds of the day going to cancer charities – the main being Breast Cancer Care – the match will be the highlight of a day which will also see stalls, auctions and raffles around Beckwithshaw CC.
Admisson is £4 for adults and £2 for children and the charity match begins at 1pm.
