Emmerdale Babes Run-Away For Children
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emmerdale stars, Charlotte Bellamy and Nicola Wheeler are taking part in this year's Hydro Active Women's 5km challenge in Birmingham on Sunday 4 September to raise money for The Children's Society. The Emmerdale 'babes' have called on ladies in Midlands to join them in the race to help raise awareness of the 2,500 children under 16 who run away from home or care in the Midlands.
Charlotte (who plays Laurel Potts) said: "The Hydro Active Challenge is one of the easier ones to complete and doing it for young runaways makes it so much more worthwhile. I'm really looking forward to it, especially since I had my baby last year as I promised myself to get fit and this is the perfect excuse. We're pleased to say that our fellow actors have promised to sponsor us and donate towards our fundraising efforts and we're still collecting. We hope all the girls from the Midlands come and join in with us for a great cause!"
Nicola (who plays Nicola Blackstock) said: "I'm really looking forward to taking part in this challenge and helping to raise money for The Children's Society and their work with young runaways. Not only is it fun but we're also getting into shape at the same time. I'm looking forward to joiing all the women from the Midlands who are running for The Children's Society - I know it's going to be a great day out for all us girls!"
Many young runaways end up sleeping in dangerous places, making them easy targets for criminals, pimps and sex offenders. With only one dedicated refuge in England, these children have nowhere safe to go and no one sound to talk to. The Children's Society's Safe and Sound campaign calls on Government to set up a network of safe emergency refuges to protect children and young poeple who are forced to runaway from home.
Each place costs £10 and each runner is asked to raise £100 in sponsorship for young runaways. To book a place with the Emmerdale babes, runners can call The Children's Society on 0845 300 1128.
