AS Emmerdale's resident vicar John Middleton is used to looking after the needs of people.
Now, though, the actor is turning his attention to man's best friends – pets.
John, who plays the Rev Ashley Thomas in the hit ITV1 show, is backing the PDSA's National Pet Check Week.
During the week – September 26 to October 2 – PDSA branches and practices across Yorkshire will be offering owners free pet health checks, plus advice on routine health issues like diet, nutrition, grooming and dental care.
John, who is a long-standing supporter of PDSA, said: "Animal health and welfare is a cause I really support and initiatives like PDSA National Pet Check Week are a great way of encouraging pet owners to take a closer look at the health of their pets.
"Pets play such a big role in people's lives offering unconditional love and companionship, and, as pet owners, we have a responsibility to care for their health and well-being."
Last year, 46 per cent of animals checked by the PDSA had one or more health problems. And recent surveys showed worrying numbers of pets suffering from dental and weight problems, as well as revealing low numbers of pets receiving regular vaccinations and health checks.
There are PDSA PetAid hospitals in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield but there are also several vets who provide a similar service.
To find the one nearest to you and to book an appointment, call the PDSA free on 0800 917 2509 or alternatively you can log on to www.pdsa.org.uk/nationalpetcheckweek
PDSA PetAid hospitals provide more than 1.2 million free treatments each year, equivalent to more than 4,650 sick and injured pets being treated by PDSA vets and nurses every working day.
This year, PDSA PetAid services will cost around £37 million. They are funded entirely by public support, mainly through donations and gifts in wills.
More information on PDSA PetAid services is available by calling freephone 0800 731 2502.
