CARLISLE city centre is set to sparkle this weekend as the Christmas season arrives.
Late-night shopping began last night and over the weekend thousands are expected in the city centre to watch the switching on of the Christmas lights.
Former Trinity School pupil Roxanne Pallett, who now stars in Emmerdale, will flick the switch on Sunday evening. The ceremony in front of the Old Town Hall starts at 4.30pm with the centrepiece 30-ft tree set to sparkle into life at 5.30pm followed by a laser display.
At 3pm, Roxanne will switch on the first Light up a Life tree for the Eden Valley Hospice.
The finale to the News & Star’s Reach for the Stars competition will also be taking place on Saturday and Sunday.
Last Christmas, the first late-night Thursday saw 38,000 people visit The Lanes. The busiest day was December 23 with 54,000 shoppers.
Meanwhile, Penrith has averted its lights crisis after new health and safety regulations threatened the switch-on. Local shops and businesses are putting up around £5,000 to help pay for installation and insurance.
