From Leeds today
By Andrew Hutchinson THEY are the Soap champs. They have put the likes of Coronation Street and EastEnders to the sword. But the stars of Emmerdale were stepping out of their league when they lined up against the pros of Leeds United. The actors were put through their paces, but not embarrassed, on a visit to Leeds United's training complex. The Allsorts football team, made up of cast members past and present, took on the club's coaching staff in a game of five-a-side. The Emmerdale line up included Ben Freeman (Scott Windsor), James Hooton (Sam Dingle) and former cast members Glenn Lamont (Richie Carter) and Anthony Lewis (Marc Reynolds). Skipper Ben said the team, who train once a week and play around a dozen games a year against celebrity opposition, had a good record coming into the game. "We have beaten Hollyoaks, Coronation Street and we never lose to the EastEnders crew," said Ben. "And we beat them in the ratings as well!" Prior to the game the Allstars toured the club's training complex at Thorp Arch, near Wetherby, watched the first-team squad prepare for Saturday's game with Wolves and met some of the players including Matt Kilgallon and Gary Kelly. And it was a dream come true for Allsorts goalkeeper Anthony Lewis when he came face-to-face with his hero, Neil Sullivan. "If you want someone to learn from, then he's the best as far as I'm concerned," said Anthony. No score for the informal game was recorded, but one thing was certain... Emmerdale were second. 16 December 2005
