Soap star treads the boards for fame school graduation
(Yorkshire Post Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Andrew Robinson SHE may be a well-paid soap star, but Verity Rushworth is just another talented student at her college in Leeds.
Despite her hectic filming schedule, Verity, 20, is a full-time student at the SLP performing arts college in Garforth - one of the country's leading "fame academies" - and is set to complete her three-year course this summer.
And to mark her graduation, the actress - who plays newlywed Donna Dingle in the hit soap Emmerdale - will take part in the college's annual summer show, along with scores of her fellow talented students.
Verity, who is studying musical theatre, will perform two numbers in the programme for the Tribute event which pays homage to screen and stage greats.
Staged at the Wakefield Theatre Royal, it will include extracts from the musicals My Fair Lady, Rent, Phantom of the Opera, Oklahoma! and song and dance to the hits of Elton John, the Who and Elvis. Verity will also feature as a soloist.
She said: "I've had an amazing time at SLP - it's been hard work combining it with filming for Emmerdale but the experience has been invaluable - you learn everything you need to know about dance, music, stage and screen.
"I love being in Emmerdale and hope to be in it for a long time yet, but I also love to sing and dance and who knows, maybe one day I could do that as well.
"People may think that I won't be nervous because I am on camera a lot, but the summer show is so popular it is likely to be a sell out, and singing and dancing to a packed live audience will be a big challenge.
"The whole show should be great. The talent at the college and the standard of teaching is incredible. I'm sure loads of the students will go on to professional careers." College principal Sandra Reid said: "Although Verity is probably our best-known student, we have many talented individuals who are destined for breakthroughs in the West End and elsewhere. This is a great chance to showcase that talent and for the audience to get a glimpse of the stars of the future.
