From www.thisisnorthscotland.co.ukn Emmerdale star last night spoke of his delight at reaching the top of Orkney's Old Man of Hoy in aid of a cancer charity. Chris Chittell took just six hours to get to the top of the 450ft stack - the UK's tallest sea stack and a revered climb - despite being afraid of heights. He overcame his fears in aid of the Press and Journal-backed urological cancer charity Ucan. Last night he said he was "elated" to have reached the top. "It was frightening but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I kept on looking at the face of the rock most of the time. I did look out occasionally when someone said 'is that a seal?' or 'is that a basking shark?' and then I'd say 'aargh!'" Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard in the show, has been working with two climbing instructors - Andi Evans and Bruce French - to prepare for the climb. "When we reached the top I just lay back and nearly cried. I looked at all my compatriots and I was very proud to be with them and very grateful for them to have got me up there." The actor is facing the challenge as one of several events in a gruelling fundraising tour of the north of Scotland for Ucan. The charity aims to raise £2million towards establishing a research centre in Aberdeen.
