From Equine World
Emmerdale's own equine star, "Fergal" the horse, will be making an appearance in a new class to be featured at the World's most famous Horse show this October. Fergal, who is an ex-racehorse, will be competing at Horse of the Year Show (4th-8th October 2006) in the new Racehorse to Riding horse class, which is sponsored by South Essex Insurance Brokers and is supported by the charity Retraining of Racehorses (‘RoR’).
Fergal, who features daily on the set of ITV’s Emmerdale, is regularly ridden on set by Patsy Kensit (Sadie King). He was in training to become a racehorse with Peter Richmond, the current owner, in 2003 and 2004, but sadly never actually ran. He was adopted as a riding horse and began showing in 2005 and can now be seen successfully competing in the show ring ridden by Lizzie Richmond.
Fergal will be one of ten ex-racehorses that have qualified for the class, some of which have very famous racing bloodlines, including Derby Winners and relatives to the legendary Shergar. With 4,000 racehorses leaving the racing industry every year, some with a poor prognosis for the future, it is important to demonstrate that there is a life for a horse after racing. It is a chance to show that after they have finished their career on the track they can be retrained to perform any number of different jobs such as; showing, dressage, and polo or can even become soap stars.
The Racehorse to Riding horse class is designed for amateurs and professionals alike and gives ex-racehorses a chance to shine in the spotlight and demonstrate that they can be re-schooled and retrained to perform in any discipline. All of the horses that have qualified for the class have had a previous career on the race track or have at least been in training to become a racehorse, the best of which will be battling it out for the prestigious title of Racehorse to Riding Horse Champion of the Year at the World’s most famous Horse Show.
