A soap star is to switch on the Christmas lights in Reigate. Ken Farrington, who plays Tommy King in Emmerdale, will flick the switch on Saturday, December 2.
In the soap Ken plays a businessman with four troublesome sons, a former drinking problem and money troubles, which he is trying to solve by finding a rich wife. The actor has also been in Heartbeat, The Bill, Holby City and Grange Hill.
The Christmas lights will be twinkling in the streets this year partly thanks to the Reigate Business Guild, which is selling raffle tickets to raise money. Tickets are being sold at £1 each with town shops putting up the prizes which include a 42in flat-screen television set, a luxury Christmas hamper from Marks & Spencer, two return Eurostar tickets to Paris and a season's golf at Reigate Hill Golf Club. The guild, which paid out £40,000 several years ago for new Christmas lights, is topping up the £5,000 provided by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to put the lights up, bring them down, maintain and store them. Having raised around £2,500 last month at a golf day, the organisation needs a further £5,000.

This is the first year the money is being raised through a raffle and retailers have provided 54 prizes valued at about £6,600.
David Bretherton, a member of the alliance of Reigate shops and businesses, said: "We are bowled over and so grateful for the fantastic support we have received. The community has really pulled together and we really all feel now, with the lights coming, the new improved thoroughfare and York stone pavements, that Reigate is thoroughly up and about and in business."
The raffle draw will be held on Friday, December 1. Tickets are available from HSBC in the High Street, La Barbe in Bell Street, Quintessence in Cage Yard and the Holmesdale Building Society in Church Road, as well as from other retailers throughout the town.
