Emmerdale star to switch on lights
By Gordon McCully
It will be a case of Dingle bells this festive season when Chorley's Christmas light go on.
Chorley-born actor Joe Gilgun, who plays Eli Dingle in hit soap Emmerdale, has been signed up by town hall chiefs to take part in the eagerly awaited event later this month.
Joe, 22, who has also appeared in Coronation Street, will be accompanied by a star-studded line up for the occasion, with the cast from Blackpool Grand Theatre's panto Dick Whittington also joining in the town centre fun and merriment.
continued...
Andrew Lee Newton, from Hollyoaks, Chorley funnyman Steve Royle, Michelle Hughes, of Nickleodeon tv, Girlthing Janine Jones and hopefully Home and Away star Ray Meagher will all take to an open top bus on Friday, November 24.
On top of all this, Chorley's Dave Spikey will be recording a special message for the Chorley FM big switch-on in Market Walk at 6.15pm.
Also joining in the festivities with Father Christmas will be Puddletown Pirates, Lostock Hall Steel Band, Fame Factor winners, Stagecoach Dancers, St Michael's Cheerleaders, JM Studios Dancers and Booths shirehorses.
Afterwards, there will be free children's entertainment and live music on a special festive stage on the Flat Iron car park, including performances by local groups. Young people will be flying the flag at the annual procession, organised by South Lancs Arts Partnership, through the town at 5pm.
Hundreds of children are expected to walk the circular route, which includes Clifford Street, Chapel Street, Market Street and Union Street, waving their own creations.
Crowds of up to 2,000 are expected for the celebration, which kick-starts the three-week programme of Christmas activities organised by Chorley Council in conjunction with Market Walk Shopping Centre.
It also marks the start of Christmas late night shopping in the town.
Coun Mark Perks, executive member for health, leisure and well being, said: "We're delighted to have been able to get Joe for the switch on. It marks the start of all the festivities in Chorley and involves the whole community - every year it grows bigger and better."
Anyone who wants to get involved in the lantern parade should meet on the Flat Iron car park at 4.30pm.
The timetable for the programme of events is as follows From 3.30pm groups will assemble for the parade on the Flat Iron car park; 5pm Father Christmas will lead the parade; 5.30pm lights switch on at Market Street; 5.45pm procession returns to the Flat Iron; 6.15pm Chorley FM radio switch on in Market Walk; until 8pm live performances on the Flat Iron car park stage.
