Emmerdale star misses switch on as he is mobbed by crowds
Crowds of people lined the streets of Chorley for the spectacular Christmas lights switch on last night.
People packed on to the town's Flat Iron market and the town centre for the annual event which kicked off the festive season.
Chorley-born actor Joe Gilgun, who plays Eli Dingle in the popular soap Emmerdale, was due to flick the switch but he was unable to fight his way through the autograph hunters.
Instead, the town was transformed into a blaze of glory by the cast from the Blackpool Grand panto Dick Whittington, including Andrew Lee Newton, alias Casanova Robbie Flynn,
Home and Away star Ray Meagher alias Alf Stewart, Chorley funnyman Steve Royle, Father Christmas, the Mayor and
Mayoress of Chorley, Mary and John Wilson, and other civic dignitaries.
Hundreds of young people have spent the last few weeks making flags and, last night, they paraded their creations through the town.
After the lights were switched on in Market Street, the parade made its way through to Market Walk for the switch on of the lights in the shopping mall and on to the Flat Iron for an evening of activities with Sportacus and his friends from Lazy Town, the top cbeebies children's TV characters.
The night also marked the launch of the new Chorley FM radio station with a good wishes message from Phoenix Nights star Dave Spikey.
The Christmas lights switch on marks the start of late night and Sunday shopping in the town
