From This is Bradford Soap stars back volunteers By Ben Barnett Two Emmerdale stars are urging people in Bradford to dress down to support lifeboat rescue volunteers. Andy Devine and Chris Chittell want school children and workers to pay £1 to swap uniforms for casual clothes on the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's SOS Day on Friday. Mr Devine, who plays Shadrach Dingle, said: "I'm full of admiration for the volunteers. I hope everyone gets behind them to help them carry on saving lives." Mr Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard, said: "Only ten per cent of new volunteers have a professional maritime background, so it's essential money is raised to pay for training." RNLI provide 24-hour coastal search and rescue all year and they rely entirely on donations. To sign up for SOS Day call RNLI on 0161 7878779, email ro/n@rnli.org.uk or visit www.rnli.org.uk/sos.

Apparently it costs £1,000 per crew member per year for training alone. SOS Day is being plugged continuously on one of our local radio stations. Of course, living on an Island, the RNLI is a particularly important charity here. Did you also know that Sir William Hillary got the idea for the RNLI while living here on the Isle of Man? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_National_Lifeboat_InstitutionLesson over for the day.
