From Leeds today
EMMERDALE actress Charlie Hardwick has lent her support to a programme designed to help homeless people find work.
The Business Action on Homelessness programme, run by Business in the Community, aims to give training and work placements to homeless people, whether they live in hostels or in supported accommodation, with the ultimate aim of increasing their employability. Charlie, who plays Val Lambert in the popular soap, presented certificates to four homeless clients who have had successful work placements following training in Leeds.
Two have completed placements with the Marks & Spencer store in central Leeds, and two did work placements with The Elite Group, a local company involved in the import and export of garments and other merchandise. A further three clients are beginning placements with the Royal Mail.
Charlie said she wished all those taking part good luck.
"I hope the experience will be of great benefit and who knows what it could lead to," she said.
"I trained as an actress what seems like a hundred years ago and I have known long, long periods of unemployment."
