I love being a killer!
Tom Lister talks about how his likable alter ego, Carl, isn't so nice after all...
"I WAS CHUFFED WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS ME!"
At first glance, it's just another Friday morning in the Inside Soap office. But look a little closer, and you'll notice a shadow of nervous anticipation on our faces as we cram a selection of heavy objects into the stationery cupboard and bundle our scissors and staplers into drawers. You see, we're expecting an ominous guest today - the man who, just 14 hours earlier, was revealed to millions of Emmerdale viewers as the culprit behind the grisly murder of Tom King! Carl King has entered the building...
"Morning!" grins the tall and affable Tom Lister, who plays Carl, as he turns the corner into our soapy domain - and all of a sudden, our fears dissolve. Having been up since the crack of dawn in preparation for the fallout from the previous evening's dramatic reveal, Tom has made Inside Soap his first port of call for a chat about his character's murderous actions. And as we sit him down with a cup of tea, he wastes no time in spilling the beans. "I was so chuffed when I found out that Carl was Tom's killer," shares the 27-year-old actor. "I was called in to see the show's producer, Kathleen Beedles, about eight weeks ago, and when she told me, I was like, 'Yessss!'. I was thrilled to bits because I'd secretly hoped it would be Carl - particularly as he's always been considered the 'nice' brother." In the midst of our chat, Tom's delighted to hear that the previous evening's episode of Emmerdale attracted 8.6 million viewers. And this fabulous news is a fitting tribute to the months of hard work which have followed the Christmas Day tragedy.
"Filming the reveal scene was really exciting," enthuses Tom. "All three of us - myself, Nick Miles [Jimmy] and Matt Healy [Matthew] - wanted to do it justice. There's been so much time invested in this story, and we wanted people to believe in its conclusion and not be disappointed. That's what we were most worried about. But I really think it worked."
After learning of Carl's handiwork with a horse-head statue, Tom and the other actors involved were sworn to secrecy. However, remaining tight-lipped proved more tricky than you might think...
"Matt, Nick and I pretended we'd been summoned to the producer's office to get told off for messing around!" Tom laughs. "We were told that we'd have to keep the news from the rest of the cast until the scripts were released a couple of weeks later. So I was sitting on my hands and trying not to look guilty. I'm so bad at keeping secrets. I told my wife, but nobody else - not even my mum and dad, or my brothers and sisters. They were all on the phone after the episode!" As he prepares to head off to the This Morning studios, Tom reveals his thoughts about what the future holds for Carl in the wake of the dramatic revelation.
"He feels like he's done the worst thing ever, and there's no going back," he sighs, after sneaking his first look at the moment Carl killed Tom on the website YouTube
"Prison is a massive fear because Carl doesn't feel that he could cope. At 1 same time, though, I think he wants! be jailed - he needs to feel punished what he's done. There's also going to be a closing of the ranks to protect the Kings and their business, because if they don't, it's the end for the brothers. And Carl's relationship with Chas is about to hit some pretty rocky waters, too.
"In the meantime, I'm just interested to find out what people think of it all," Tom adds. "I'm expecting all those elderly ladies who used to love me to start throwing things at me. I'm going out for dinner tonight, and I'm flippin' dreading it now!"
