Inside Soap Emmerdale extra.
Welcome to Inside Soap's celebration of all things Emmerdale! Here, in a revealing interview, the show's producer, Kathleen Beedles, answers questions set by our readers - and hints at what's to come...
Reader Sam from Cheshire asks...
Who will become the Dales biggest bitch Carrie or Rosemary?
Emmerdale's Kath Beedles replies...
I certainly think Rosemary still has some dastardly deeds to carry out, but Carrie hasn't truly shown her claws yet. There's real potential for a big battle between them, isn't there? Then again, you never know - there may be new bitches joining... or old faces rejoining!.
After a storyline as big as the Tom King murder mystery, are you worried that what follows may seem a bit flat in comparison? Elizabeth, Bromley Not at all. There's loads of good stuff coming up, I promise you that! I've just watched an hour-long episode which is screening this month, and it's very good indeed. So don't worry, there will always be lots of exciting stories to look forward to.
Are Carl and Louise going to get together? They seem a good match, not feast since they've both secretly murdered someone Helen, Edinburgh [Laughs] That would be comedy! But no, they won't be getting together anytime soon. Louise does have someone on the horizon, though - a younger man...
Why did you kill off poor old Len Reynolds? Bonnie, London
Well, some characters are just lovely, and you greatly admire the actor who plays them and love what they've done. But then sometimes a plot comes along that's so good, you have to sacrifice that character for the story. It's like when Tricia Dingle died in 2004 after the big storm - it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and her last scene was heartbreaking.
It was the same with Len. Do you remember the scene with Edna and Len having that final heart-to-heart at the cricket pavilion? Watching that in the full knowledge of what was coming up, I nearly cried. I was thinking, 'Aw, that's so sweet!'. And Len and Pearl had split up so many times, we thought we could do something amazing with this bolt-from-the-blue death. So, as much as we loved Len...
I know Anne Charleston is returning as Lily Lovett, but are there more actors famous for roles in other soaps who you'd like to join Emmerdale? Nikki, Sunderland Not necessarily - I like actors from any background. We've had Duncan Preston and Paula Wilcox with us recently [as Laurel's parents, Douglas and Hilary Potts], which has been great. I've been a fan of them both for years. It's the same with Anne. When I was younger, I was hooked on Neighbours [in which Anne played Madge Bishop], so I'm dead excited about her coming back. She's amazing! While I don't tend to prejudice anyone in terms of what they've done, if an actor has only just come out of another soap, it can be hard to make the transition.
Will the Kings remain the ruling clan in the village?
David, Leeds
Definitely. There's loads of life in that family yet!
Emmerdale has had quite a few celebrity guests - is there any star in particular who you'd like to appear?
Donna, London
There's someone I'd definitely love to have - Michael Palin. I think he's fantastic, I've no idea if he's an Emmerdale fan, but the only reason I work in telly is because I fell in love
with him when I was 11 years old! I know he had a walk-on part in Home and Away once, so maybe we can get him, too. He's such a good actor and so funny. I think he'd be amazing.
Is private school going to change little Belle?
Irene, Walney Island
I don't know if it will, actually. It hasn't yet, and she's a strong girl. I think she'll struggle with the clash of worlds, but it's a journey for her - part of growing up and accepting who she is.
Is there a new romance planned for Rosemary? Who would you like to see her with?
Jay, Ashford
I reckon she's got too many other things going on right now, don't you? You never know, though. From a personal point of view... maybe Rodney?
I thought last year's show home collapse was truly spectacular. Are there any more big stunts coming up?
Peter, Kenilworth
I'm glad you liked it, Peter! The house collapse was incredible, and turned out so much better than I thought it would. We've got the show's 35th anniversary in the autumn, which we want to make very exciting, so we're in talks to do something fun later in the year.
Please can you make Edna find love at last?
Jenni, Bristol
Not now that Len's gone!
If Emmerdale was a real village and you lived there, which characters do you reckon you'd be friends with?
Spencer, London
Ooh, that's a difficult one! For me, it's hard to differentiate between characters and actors, you see... [Thinks] Actually, I think I'd probably be friends with Diane and Val, because they're always up for a laugh - and they own a pub!
Which character would you most like to see return?
Olive, Frome
I'd always love Charity Tate to come back. In fact, we did have a storyline in mind, but Emma Atkins [who played her] has other things happening at the moment, and I understand that she wants to get out there and tackle new things. So Charity would be my first choice, and my second would be Robert Sugden or maybe Zoe Tate -I miss both those characters, too. All three would easily fit right back in. It's like the return of Kelly. That's been a huge success, not only thanks to Adele Silva being so brilliant and funny in the part, but also because Kelly has so many connections to other characters. It would be the same with Charity - you wouldn't even notice that two years have passed since we last saw her.
