Tim Firth's unique comedy sees the kids of Flint St primary school bring a festive repeat of the world's greatest story ever told. Back by popular demand are the psychotic innkeeper, an angel in fear, a know-it-all Mary and a donkey whose lost his stick insect. All trying desperately to remember the words to all the carols and keep their parents and teacher Mrs Horrocks happy.
The Flint Street Nativity is a must for any child who's ever been in a nativity or any adult who's watched one through their fingers. Directed by Matthew Lloyd the unruly cast of 10 includes Daniel Casey, Karl Davies, Neil Caple, and Kate McGregor at the Liverpool Playhouse through Saturday 12 January 2008.
"Anyway none of it really 'appened. My Mum's got a farm an' she says they would never've 'ad oxes and asses in the same stall 'cos they 'ave different bone meal."
Writer Tim Firth is best known for his comedies: the award-winning television series All Quiet On The Preston Front; and the feature films Calendar Girls, Kinky Boots and Blackball. His first major play, Neville's Island (1992) gained a West End transfer from the StephenJosephTheatre in Scarborough and won an Olivier award nomination for Best Comedy. In 2003 he wrote Our House, a musical based upon the songs of Madness, which won the Olivier for Best Musical. He has also written the children's comedy The Rottentrolls and The Cruise of The Gods.
Some children have been kept back a year: Neil Caple (Unprotected, Two) returns as the Queston of Sport loving Ryan who has to play both Herod and Joseph, due to a bout of chicken pox at the school; Rina Mahoney (Casualty) is trying to keep her Daddy happy as Flint Street's Angel; and Annabelle Dowler (The Archers) returns bearing gifts (from the Bingo) as Wise Man Gold.
New to class are Samantha Power (Little Britain) donning a tea-towel as the Shepherd, while Karl Davies (Emmerdale's Robert Sugden) will be both the Star and the Donkey. Liverpool's Alan Stocks (Wire in the Blood's DS Don Merrick) will be deadly dangerous as the Innkeeper, while Kate McGregor (Emmerdale's Emily Dingle) is the perfect pupil and the perfect Mary, despite Helen Carter's scheming to steal Baby Jesus and swap her Angel Gabriel costume for Mary's robes. With lots of practice Daniel Casey (Midsomer Murder's Sergeant Troy) will be Wise Man Frankincense – if he manages to pronounce it correctly - and Craige Els (Spamalot, Never Forget) is a nervous narrator trying to learn his lines off by heart to impress his dad.
Director Matthew Lloyd comes back too and reunites last year's innovative creative team of designer Robin Don and musical director Gavin Kaufman with Charles Balfour as lighting designer and John Leonard as sound designer. This, together with Tim Firth's funny and original versions of classic carols, all makes for an exciting revival of a well-loved Christmas cracker of a night out for all ages. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
