Unwelcome visitor- Ex-Emmerdale star Emma Atkins plays a bitter blonde who's ready to wage war on Wetherby...
She was always trouble as Emmerdale's scheming Charity Tate, and this week actress Emma Atkins causes more bother, when she makes a guest appearance in Heartbeat as mysterious Lesley Ashton - who's about to upset PC Don Wetherby's new life in Aidensfield...
"Wetherby protected Lesley during a case he worked on, when she was being abused by her husband," says Rupert Ward-Lewis, who plays the troubled cop. "Wetherby knew she'd developed a bit of a crush on him, but he never expected her
to turn up in the village. She walks into the police station and Wetherby's colleagues are instantly curious, because he has a wife and two kids. The last thing he needs at the moment is someone threatening to tarnish his reputation in the community."
Wetherby asks Lesley to leave, but she clearly isn't a woman to take no for an answer, and speaks to Gina about renting the cottage that she and hubby Phil were living in before he was killed. Fortunately, Wetherby can rely on Joe's support.
"Joe gives him a bolthole at the station house so he can hide from Lesley," Rupert explains. "She's in the pub one evening, and when Wetherby enters, Joe warns him away while trying to distract Lesley. But she follows Wetherby into the car park and throws herself in front of his vehicle - and he ends up knocking her down!"
Lesley later turns up at the station again to report the incident to Wetherby's superior, Sergeant Miller, claiming that he deliberately drove at her.
"Wetherby's career is on the line," sighs Rupert. "He's stumped by the whole situation, as he's never had to deal with anything like this before. He tries his best to sort it out, but the question is: Can he stick around if no one believes him?"
While his alter ego may be having a tough time of it, Rupert admits that he's having a ball on the Heartbeat set.
"Everyone has been really welcoming," smiles the actor, who's also appeared in Down To Earth and The Bill. "I've settled in incredibly quickly because we have such a great cast and crew. And I've known Lisa Kay [Carol] for about 10 years - we went to drama school together. I'm really enjoying working with her again."
