From Inside Soap 15th-21st March 2008-
Die another day.Ex-Emmerdale favourite Linda Thorson guest stars in Doctors as a terminally ill aristocrat...
She never got the chance to film Rosemary King's demise in Emmerdale, but this week Linda Thorson steps into the shoes of an equally glamorous woman living out her final days, as she makes a guest appearance in Doctors. However, the actress confesses that she's still mourning her Dales alter ego, who she played until last autumn...
"I had a terrific 18 months in that soap, and fortunately I have a nice career and am always in work - though I must admit, I do miss Rosemary," sighs 60-year-old Linda. "People come up to me all day long and tell me that they miss her, too. I never wanted to leave - but I was rather vocal to the powers that be about who Rosemary was, and you're not allowed to have much of a say on soaps." Playing a character she can empathise with is clearly important to Linda, which is why she jumped at the chance to star as Mill patient Caro Francis.
"I did it as a tribute to my mother, who died at the age of 57," she shares. "Caro has an inoperable brain tumour and, like my mother was, is angry and frightened -she's not ready to die. She's very stylish, and even though she only has a week to live, she's still trying to look her best." On the inside, however, Caro's a very bitter lady, and is quick to unleash her wrath on Vivien
and Melody when there's a mix-up with her appointment at the surgery.
"But after a stripping down from Vivien, Caro has an epiphany," reveals Linda. "You can see this woman has stopped fighting and fearing death, and is now embracing the people who care about her, like her son. It's very moving - my tears were real."
Despite the emotion of the storyline, Linda insists that her role was fun to film.
"I had to put on an Italian accent, so some of the crew thought I was from the Continent," laughs the Canadian-born star. "But most of them did recognise me from Emmerdale. I had a wonderful time on Doctors. Everyone works so well together."
With two soaps already under her belt, the actress - who found fame as Tara King , in cult 60s TV series The Avengers - admits that she'd love to tackle Corrie next.
"I'd like to perhaps play an American," Linda offers. "She'd arrive in Weatherfield totally lost and would have a heart attack, and the locals would look after her. Or she'd come with a mission, maybe as an undercover agent - Tara King could live again!"
Sadly, it seems Linda's far too busy with other projects right now to even consider joining the Street.
"I'm touring the country in the play Equus," she smiles. "I'm also doing this endless project of my autobiography, so I've got lots of writing to get through."
Given that Linda's been married three times, dated legendary crooner Frank Sinatra, and counts Prince Albert of Monaco among her close friends, that book should make one very interesting read...
