OK. This is my attempt at a fan fiction! I thought i might as well try it because i am always on this site! Feedback is welcome. Here goes!
It was a cold winter morning in Emmerdale. There were residents walking to the shop. Down the road walked an unfamiliar face with a rucksack on her back. She was in her mid to late twenties, average looking with dark hair.
Matthew King came racing down the road in his brand new top of the range car. He noticed the stranger and stopped. He rolled down his window.
Matthew: Hi, do you need help? Woman: No thanks, I think I know where I am. Matthew: I'm Matthew King. Maybe after you've settled in I can take you for a drink and show you around. Woman: No thankyou, I have better things to do with my time. Matthew: Going to the B and B? Woman: Are you deaf?
Matthew, obviously annoyed at this, sped off in his car, around the corner and out of sight. The woman found the B and B and entered.
Across the road outside the shop there were raised voices.
Viv: Why don't you just leave Pearl Ladderbanks. And take your rapist son with you. You are not wanted here. Pearl: I haven't done anything wrong. Viv: You have brought a rapist among our community! Pearl: He's a good boy really. Viv: He tried to attack my Donna.
Just then, Len arrived, angered at what he had heard.
Len: What's going on? Viv: Oh, its you! You know, you're just as bad as her! Len: (to Pearl) Come on Love, lets go home. Viv: You have no home in this village. Len: Why don't you just keep that poisonous tongue of yours inside that big mouth.
Len and Pearl walked away, with Pearl in tears and Len angry.
Viv: Nobody wants you here any more!
She storms back into the shop, dismayed that Len and Pearl didn't look back.

It was lunchtime in the Woolpack. The new resident had just walked in. She approached the bar.
Diane: Yes pet, what can I get you? Woman: I'll have a vodka and coke please. Diane: Coming right up!
Diane poured the woman a drink and gave it to her.
Diane: That'll be £1.50 please.
The woman gave Diane a handful of change.
Woman: There should be enough there. Diane: Thanks. So what are you doing here in the village? Just passing? Woman: No, I'm staying here for a while. Travelling around the British Isles and I'm here in Yorkshire. Diane: Well, if your going to be a familiar face in the next few weeks, I'd better know your name. Woman: I'm Nikki. Diane: I'm Diane. If you ever need anything just ask.
At that Diane went across the bar and spoke to Dawn, who had just arrived.
Dawn: Terry isn't around, is he? Diane: Sorry pet. Him and Louise went out about an hour ago. Jogging I think. Dawn: (sighing) Great! Only I need someone to look after T.J. Dad's busy and I.ve got to be at work in 10 minutes. Diane: They should be back soon. I'll get Paul to look after him. He's great with children. Dawn: Thanks Diane.
Dawn walked out of the pub. Nikki is at the bar, looking around, taking in everything around her, when Matthew and Jimmy walk in.
Matthew: Look, we have to get this deal sorted Jimmy. Dad has gone and left us without a sign, just a letter. Besides there is a lot of money involved. Jimmy: Yeah, well you don't have to be a ruthless businessman all the time. There are easier and nicer ways to get a deal sorted.
Matthew had noticed Nikki sitting across the bar. He had stopped listening to Jimmy and walked towards her.
Matthew: Can I buy you a drink? Nikki: Only just bought one myself. Matthew: C'mon, are you going to be like that all the time? Nikki: Like what? Matthew: I'm only trying to make you feel welcome and your being out of order. Nikki: I don't think I am. I'm being quite normal. Anyway, I don't do getting to attached to people if I can help it. I go from place to place in a blink of an eye. Matthew: I didn't say anything about getting attached. I just want to get to know you a little bit. At least tell me your name. Nikki: It's Nikki. Matthew: I'm Matthew but you can call me Matt. Nikki: I know, you said this morning. Who's your friend?
Nikki looks over at Jimmy.
Matthew: This is my brother Jimmy. Jimmy: Nice to meet you. Would you car to join us? Nikki: OK Matthew: Another of what Nikki had Diane.
They went and found a table.
In walked a group of ladies. They went to get a table.
Viv: This is outragous. This Frank Bernard has been in this village for 2 mounths now! What are we going to do about it ladies? Edna: My goodness Viv Hope! Why don't you give it a rest? He went away and now he has come back. Leave him alone. He wants a normal life. Nicola: He's a rapist! He could pounce on any woman at any time. Edna: He hasn't so far has he. Viv: I don't care. He could attack my Donna. Really scared of him, she is.
Viv was getting postively angry because her voice was raised up to 3 times her normal tone.
Diane: Look ladies, this is a pub. I don't want any arguments, OK. Now quiet down or leave.
Across the pub, Nikki had taken an interest in this conversation.
Nikki: (To Matthew) What's all that about? Matthew: A rapist has come to live in the village. They're sick!
At this comment Jimmy started coughing as if to suggest something. Matthew turned and looked at him angrily.
Jimmy: Sorry. Just got a tickle in my throat. Nikki: Anyway, you were saying about your businesses. Matthew: Yes, well we own lots. Can't even name them all as there are so many! Nikki: Wow. You 2 must have a lot to deal with. Jimmy: No, not really. We have other workers aswell. Nikki: So what about family? Matthew: We have 2 brothers, Carl and Max. Carls going out with that barmaid.
He points at Chas, who has just started her shift.
Nikki: What about Max? Jimmy: He doesn't live around here. Matthew: (to Nikki) So, how long are you staying around here? Nikki: Dunno yet. Probably about 6 months. Matt: Any history? Nikki: Lots, but I won't bore you with it now. Jimmy: We'd best be getting back to the office.
Jimmy gets up out of his seat and heads towards the door. He turns around and notices Matthew hasn't moved.
Jimmy: Matt, are you coming? Matthew: I'm right behind you. Jimmy: Don't be to long.
He walked out of the door.
Matt: Look, I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner tomorrow night? Nikki: That'll be nice. Matthew: Great, I'll meet you in here at about 6.30. Nikki: OK.
At this, Matthew left looking pleased with himself.

Pity Matt King doesn't get as much airtime on real Emmerdale as he does here. He's on nearly every story. I'm not complaining though, as all the stories are new and original.
I'm liking the story so far, Nikki definitley seems interesting. And I'm also liking the references to Frank, will he reoffend with this newcomer or will that be a different thing altogether? I wonder...

It was the following evening in the Woolpack. Nikki had just walked in dressed rather smartly. She went to the bar.
Diane: What can I get you? Nikki: I'll have a vodka and coke whilst I wait. Diane: Waiting for what? Nikki: I'm going out tonight! Diane: Who's the lucky fella? Nikki: Matthew. Diane: What? King? Nikki: Yeah. What do you know about him? Diane: Not much. He's been in the village for about a year. Keeps himself to himself. Family are mega-rich though.
Just as she said that, Matthew walked through the door. He had lost his suit and was quite smart in a casual shirt and trousers.
Matthew: You made it! Nikki: I wouldn't have missed it. Matthew: Ready to go?
Nikki quickly downed her drink and paid Diane.
Diane: Have fun!
The two of them walked out of the Woolpack.
Nikki: So where are we going? Matthew: There's this new restaurant in Hotten. Thought we might give it a try.
They walked down the road to Matthew's car. Walking towards them was Frank. Matthew guided Nikki to the other side of the road.
Nikki: What are you doing? Your car's just over there. Matthew: That's the rapist. Nikki: He isn't doing any harm at the moment. Anyway he seems lost in thought. I have met worse than him on my travels. Matthew: Still, he's bad news and a scum bag.
They got in the car and sped of around the corner. Frank was still walking down the road. He was looking around him for one last time. He knew the only way his mum was going to be happy and have a normal life again is if he moved away. He walked into Jacobs Fold.
Pearl: Frank, where have you been? Why is your suitcase packed? Frank: I'm moving away. I don't want to be looked at the way people do everyday in my life. Besides, you'd be happier if I left. Len: Your part of the family and this is your home. Pearl: I'm coming with you. Frank: This is not my home. This is your home. You live here with Len. It'd be best all round if I left.
A taxi had just pulled up outside. Frank picked up his suitcase and walked towards the door.
Frank: Bye mum.
He walked out of the door and got into the taxi. Pearl started to cry in Len's arms.
Len: It's OK Love. It'll be alright.

It was later in the Woolpack. Jimmy was sat at the bar, looking at the bottom of his empty glass. Carl came up next to him.
Carl: Can I get you another, Jim? Jimmy: Yeah, why not. Carl: Why are you being like this? Same again, Diane.
Diane poured two pints for the King brothers.
Carl: Well? Jimmy: What do you mean well? My marrige is over by the looks of it. Carl: You both wanted different things. Anyway, she has only gone away for a couple of months. She'll come back. Jimmy: I wouldn't be so sure. Diane: There you go boys. That'll be £3.50 please. Good news about your brother. Carl: What Matthew? Why? Diane: He went out with that new girl. Looks rather happy about it. Carl: Well, its about time! Hopefully he'll settle down. Jimmy: Yeah, maybe.
Jimmy took his pint to a vacant table, and downed half of it in one, lost in thought.
-----------------------------------
Outside Victoria Cottage, Matthews car had just pulled up outside. He and Nikki got out.
Nikki: Poor Jimmy. He seemed fine yesterday. How long ago did his wife leave him? Matthew: About a month ago. Appaerently, they are only on a seperation period or something.
They approached the door. Matthew got out his keys.
Matthew: Fancy a drink? Nikki: Don't know if I should. Matthew: Come on, the night is only just beginning! Nikki: OK then, why not.
Matthew opened the door and they entered Victoria Cottage.
Matthew: Just make yourself comfortable.
Matthew went onto the kitchen and got 2 beers out of the fridge whilst Nikki sat down on the sofa.
Nikki: This is a nice place. Matthew: Thanks. I only moved in about six months ago. It's a bit small but it's only me living here.
Matthew handed Nikki a beer and sat next to her.
Nikki: So, Carl is divorced. Jimmy is on a trail seperation. What about you? Any former wives or girlfriends I should know about? Matthew: No. Nikki: Come on. A nice looking bloke like you can't have been single all his life. Matthew: I haven't! Nikki: Well. Tell me. Matthew: I was going to get married. But I didn't. Nikki: Why? Did you leave her? She left you? What? Matthew: She died. It was a few years ago. We were on holiday. We had a stupis argument. She wanted to buy something, and I didn't want her spending loads of money on something she wouldn't use again. She stormed out of the room. I stayed in the room all night and she never came back. Then I got a phone call, telling me to go doen to the reception. There were two police officiers there. They told me they had found her body washed up a mile down the coast. She had been drinking. I couldn't believe it. I felt so guilty, as if it was all my fault. I had to go home and break the news to our families. I went back to live with me dad. I couldn't stand being reminded of her everywhere I went. Only just really getting over it. Nikki: That must've been terrible for you. Matthew: It's taken a while. You're the first girl I've asked out since it happened. Nikki: Poor you.
She gave Matthew a hug.
Nikki: It's OK now though? Matthew: Yeah, I'm over it. Nikki: Good.
She leans in and kisses Matthew. He kisses her back and they are kissing passionately on the sofa.

It is the nect morning and Matthew is asleep. Nikki is getting dressed and wakes up Matthew.
Matthew: Where are you going? Nikki: I've got to go back to the B and B. Matthew: Stay for breakfast at least. Wait for five minutes and i'll take you to the cafè.
Nikki: OK, only if you're buying!
Matthew gets dressed and they both walk out of Victoria Cottage to the cafè where Viv sees them. They both walk into the cafè.
Viv: What can I get you both? Matthew: Two coffees and two breakfasts. Viv: Whats the magic word? Matthew: Now. Viv: Charming! I'll bring it over.
Matthew and Nikki go and find a table. Viv brings over the coffees.
Viv: I saw you both leave Victoria Cottage. Nikki: I don't think thats any of your business. And I don't appreciate load mouthed gossips sticking their noses in where it isn't wanted. Viv: This is my cafè and I can throw you out! Nikki: I'd like to see you try! I am one of your customers after all.
Viv walks off and prepares the breakfasts. Matthew sits there laughing, rather impressed with Nikki's attitude.
Nikki: So, is she the village busybody then? Matthew: Something like that. Hey, how about going out again tonight? Nikki: I don't know about tonight. I was hoping to get a bit more settled. Matthew: How about tomorrow then? I can take a day off work and show you around. Not that there is anything to do at work, Jimmy is doing everything. Nikki: OK then. We could go to the pub for a drink though. Matthew: Sure.
There breakfasts arrive.
Matthew: Last night was fun. Nikki: Yeah, hopefully there will be many more fun nights like that.
Matthew smiles at Nikki as he finishes his breakfast.
--------------------------------
Its late afternoon in the Woolpack. Jimmy is sat at a table when Nikki walks in.
Louise: Yes. Nikki: I'll have a vodka please. Could you bring it over. Louise: Sure. £1.25 please. Nikki: There you are.
Nikki walks over and sits next to Jimmy.
Nikki: Mind if I join you? Jimmy: Not at all Nikki: Look, Matthew told me about your wife. I'm sorry. Jimmy: He should have kept his mouth shut. I don't want everyone knowing. Nikki: Sitting in a pub all day won't help, will it? Anyway, from what Matthew was saying, she'll come back. Jimmy: I don't think so. Nikki: Look, Matt seems to have got through the death of his fiance, doesn't he? And this isn't really as bad as that.
Jimmy looks at Nikki. He can't believe that Matthew has to her this lie.
Jimmy: You may be right. Look, i've got to get back. C'ya.
Jimmy finishes his drink and leaves.
---------------------------------------
Jimmy walks into the offices of King and Sons.
Matthew: Where have you been? Jimmy: You told Nikki your sob story about your 'fiance'! Matthew: Yeah, and? Jimmy: It's a total lie! Why? Why do it? Matthew: I dunno, why not? Jimmy: You're sick! Matthew: It's not that bad is it? Lighten up Jimmy! Jimmy: I wonder if Nikki would think that when I tell her. Matthew: Don't you dare do that. Look things went really well last night. Don't spoil it. This is the first girlfriend I have had since I've been here. That has been a year! Jimmy: Tell her! Anyway, what do you mean girlfriend? You've only been out once! Matthew: Yeah, but we're going out again tomorrow night. Jimmy: Just tell her!
Jimmy storms out of the offices totally disgusted at his younger brother.

It was a month after Nikki had come into the village. Everything between her and Matthew were going great. Matthew still hadn't told Nikki that he lied about his dead fiancè, much to the annoyance of Jimmy. He couldn't stand Matthew treating her the way he was.
It was one evening in the Woolpack. There was still talk about Frank Bernard and his sudden disappearance. However, Pearl had stopped getting verbal abuse in the street. There were a group of residents sat at a table. Viv was leading.
Viv: Now, that scumbag Frank Bernard has left. However, we have to make sure that he doesn't come back. Edna: Look, he has left. What are the chances of him returning? Scott: Well, his mother does live here. Viv: We are going to have to think of something Edna: There is no way that we can stop him from coming back! He is entitled to live here if the authorities allow it. Viv: Well, we will find a way!
They all sit there thinking about what to do.
Nikki walks into the Woolpack.
Chas: Usual? Nikki: Of course. Chas: How's it going with Matthew? Don't know what you see in him.
She pours Nikki a vodka and coke.
Nikki: The same thing you see in his brother. Chas: Carl isn't a pig like Matthew! Nikki: I don't think Matthew's a pig. Why do you think he is? Chas: I have my reasons.
Jimmy and Carl walk in.
Carl: Two pints please, Chas. Chas: Coming up darling.
She pulls two pints and takes the money from Carl and Nikki.
Nikki: So where's your brother tonight? Jimmy: I thought you'd know that. Anyway, he'll be here in a minute. Nikki: Good.
Just as she said that, Matthew came through the door.
Matthew: Alright love! Chas: Hiya darling! Matthew: Very funny. Bring us over a pint will ya? Chas: I suppose so, if you ask nicely. Matthew: (Sarcastically) Please
Nikki and Matthew get a table.
Nikki: Whats up? Matthew: Nothing. Can't I just spend some time with you? Nikki: Of course you can. Matthew: I was wondering if you wanted to go out tomorrow night? Or I could cook for you. Nikki: That'll be nice.
Matthews mobile rings.
Matthew: Hello..... Why?..... I'm on my way. Look love, i've got to go. I'll ring you a bit later.
He kisses Nikki and walks out of the door. Jimmy walks over to Nikki with a drink in his hand. He puts it in front of her.
Jimmy: Looks like you could do with another. Where's Matthew? Nikki: He had to go somewhere. Urgent by the sounds of it. Jimmy: He'll be back before long. He really cares for you, you know. Nikki: I care for him. He's really honest and genuine. Seems to have a few enemies though. Jimmy: That said, you know his fiancè, the one who died. Well, he lied. He never had a fiancè.
Nikki: Why did you say that? Jimmy: Because its true. I don't lie. Nikki: Why would he lie about it? Jimmy: I dunno. Maybe to get sympathy. Maybe he didn't want you to think that he was a loner or something. I don't know what goes through his head. He does really care for you though. Nikki: How can he care if he's lied? Jimmy: He does. He told me. Are you going to say anything to him? Nikki: Dunno. Why? You are telling the truth aren't you? Jimmy: I wouldn't lie to you.
He smiles at Nikki.
Jimmy: So, how about getting out of here? Come back to my place. I have a mini-bar. We can have a laugh. Nikki: OK then. Where do you live? Jimmy: I'll show you. Come on.
They abandon their table and leave the pub.

Jimmy's car pulls up outside Home Farm.
Jimmy: Welcome. Nikki: This is your house?
She sounded rather impressed.
Nikki: So, how come you live here and Matthew only lives in a cottage? Jimmy: This is actually someone elses. Zoe Tate's. I'm looking after it for her. She's ill at the moment. Nikki: Where are you going to live when she comes back? Jimmy: I can move into my Dad's house. It's empty there at the moment. Matthew didn't want to leave his house and I didn't want to leave this place.
He opens the door and leads Nikki into the lounge. He approaches the newly installed mini-bar and pours two drinks.
Jimmy: Cheers! Nikki: Cheers!
They down their drinks with Jimmy rather pleased at how impressed Nikki is.
-------------------------------------
Back at the Woolpack, Viv is talking to Louise about Frank Bernard.
Viv: You see, we have to make sure he doesn't come back. You know he attacked my Donna. He could come back and try it again. Louise: Have you thought of anything? Viv: Not yet. Louise: Well, you could get cameras or something that can be put around the village. Then we can watch his every move. Viv: Thats a good idea. We could ask Eric, couldn't we. Louise: We can ask him now. Eric!
Eric walks over to Louise and Viv.
Eric: Is there a problem? Viv: We are talking about this Frank Bernard. He could come back into this village. We want to stop him. Louise suggested cameras. Eric: That won't keep him out. Viv: I know but it means we could watch his every move. Eric: It'll be expensive. I can't see the council paying thousands of pounds. They let him in after all. Viv: We could start an organisation. Say we raise a certain amount of money and the council pays the rest. Eric: How are you going to raise thousands of pounds? Viv: We'll find a way.
She walks away, thinking of ways to raise the money.
----------------------------------------------------
Back at Home Farm it's quite late. Nikki and Jimmy are rather drunk.
Jimmy: Are you going back to the B and B tonight. Nikki: Yeah, best get a move on. Jimmy: It's rather late. Why don't you stay in one of the spare bedrooms tonight? Nikki: No, you're OK. That landlady complains if I'm not there. I spend most evenings at Matt's. There's a room going to waste, you see. I'm going to have to start looking for my own place. Think I might stay in the village for a little while longer than planned. Jimmy: You're in no fit state to walk back and I can't exactly walk you back. I can't even stand up! Nikki: I suppose so. OK then, if you insist. Jimmy: Good. Another then? Nikki: There, OK.
Jimmy gets two more drinks and hands one to Nikki.
Nikki: So why did you and your wife split up? Jimmy: She didn't want children. Nikki: That doesn't really seem like a big deal. Jimmy: Yes it is. We were trying for over a year. It turns out that the stupid bitch was still taking her contraceptive injections behind my back! Nikki: Oh, thats terrible. Jimmy: Thats why I can't stand Matt lying to you. Nikki: Well, its nothing serious between me and Matthew. Jimmy: I think he wants it to be. He's the only King who hasn't married. I think he wants to settle down, with you. Nikki: Then why does he lie? Jimmy: I don't understand it. I'd never lie to a woman like that. I'd never lie to you like that anyway.
She looks at Jimmy. He leans in and kisses her. She kisses him back. Then she realises what she is doing and pulls away.
Nikki: I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. Jimmy: Why? Nikki: Because I'm seeing Matthew. Jimmy: You said it wasn't serious. Nikki: You said he wants it to be serious. Anyway, your marrige is over. I feel like you are only doing this because of your wife. Jimmy: No its not. I really like you.
He leans in and kisses her again but she stops him.
Nikki: And I really like you. Jimmy: Well what's the problem? Nikki: Matthew! Jimmy: He doesn't have to know. Nikki: I'm sorry.
She walks away to the door. She realises that she has forgotten her bag. She goes back to get it. Jimmy is sat there, upset at what has just happened. Nikki picks up her bag.
Nikki: Jimmy, I'm sorry.
Jimmy turns around.
Jimmy: No, I'm sorry. Its all my fault. I'm useless. With my marridge. With the business. Dad was always telling me I was hopeless. Matt says it to. Nikki: Don't listen to them. They don't know what they are talking about. You're not useless. Not to me.
Jimmy looks at her. This time she kisses him and he kisses her back.

It was the following morning. Nikki had just left Home Farm and was feeling really guilty. She was also really angry at Matthew for lying to her and for not calling. She walks into the B and B, to her room. Steph walks in.
Steph: Oh, so your back. Makes a change. Nikki: Doesn't it. Steph: Where have you been? Seeing that boyfriend of yours probably. Nikki: That's none of your business. So I suggest you keep your nose out. Steph: It is my business when there is a room going to waste because you're never here! Nikki: I pay you don't I. Steph: So, do you want breakfast? Nikki: Not if you're cooking it. Steph: I don't like your attitude. Anyway, do you want any or not? Nikki: No, I'm going out.
Nikki brushes past Steph and walks out of the B and B. As she gets outside, Jimmy is waiting for her.
Nikki: What do you want? Jimmy: You left without saying goodbye. Nikki: I didn't wanna wake you. Jimmy: It was fun. How about going out again tonight? Nikki: I don't think so. Look it was fun but it can never happen again. I realised a lot of things last night. Jimmy: Like what? Nikki: Things about Matthew that I only want to talk to him about. So we have to forget about it, OK. Jimmy: So what about me? Pretend like nothing happened? Nikki: Yes! Jimmy: Fine then!
He marches off across the road to the offices. Nikki walks up the pathway to Victoria Cottage. She bangs on the door, still angry with Matthew. Matthew opens it. He has a piece of toast in his hand.
Matthew: Oh, alright love? Nikki: Can I come in? Matthew: Sure.
He lets Nikki in.
Nikki: So, where did you get to last night? Matthew: Sorry. I got caught up. Some business deal that took longer to sort than expected. Nikki: I was worried about you. You said you would call. Matthew: Yeah, I know. I'm sorry. What did you do last night anyway? Nikki: Oh, I just had a drink with Jimmy. Talked about his wife and that.
She was wondering about whether to ask Matthew about his fiancè.
Matthew: Getting someone else to feel sorry for him was he? Nikki: Something like that. Matthew: Are you OK? You look really tired and distracted. Nikki: It's that B and B. Can't get a goods night sleep. Going into Hotten today. See if there are any properties on the market. Matthew: How will you afford that? Nikki: I do have some money, you know. Maybe not as much as you, but I have enough! Matthew: Look, I was going to ask you last night but I didn't get the chance. I think that this is something special we have. Don't look at any properties in Hotten. Move in with me. Nikki: What?
She was stunned.
Matthew: I love you. Move in with me. Today! I'll take the day off. Nikki: You're serious! Matthew: Of course I am! I wouldn't have said it if I wasn't. Nikki: You love me? Matthew: I love you more than I have loved anyone! You're the only thing that matters to me. You're the most important person in my life! Nikki: I love you too!
They kiss eachother. This is the happiest Nikki has ever been in her life.

It was late morning. Matthew hadn't been to work as he was helping Nikki move out of the B and B. Nikki was in her room getting the last of her things together when Steph walked in.
Steph: Oh, so I see you are moving on. You know you are supposed to tell me, as I am the landlady. Anyway, goodbye!
She sounded pleased. Nikki shot her a nasty look.
Nikki: No. No goodbyes, I'm afraid. Steph: So what are you doing with your things? Nikki: Moving. Steph: You just said that you wasn't!
She was starting to get annoyed, which was pleasing Nikki.
Nikki: I'm moving in with Matthew. So I'll still get to see you everyday! Steph: He's a fast mover! You've only been in this village for a month!
Nikki shot Steph a nasty look.
Nikki: Yeah, well, its what we both want. I suppose you would understand if you were in love and if anyone stayed with you long enough! I reckon they would just have to look at you and they would be off to the other side of the country!
Before Steph could answer, Matthew walked in the room.
Matthew: All packed then? Nikki: Yeah. Shall we go? I'll settle up the bill with you later Steph, if that's OK. Steph: As long as you do pay! Matthew: Come on, lets get outta here! Nikki: Bye! Thanks for your kind hospitality!
There was a hint of sarcasm in her voice. Matthew and Nikki walked out of the B and B, where they saw Jimmy coming out of the offices.
Jimmy: You know Matthew, you could have called! Matthew: Sorry brother. I got held up. Jimmy: What's going on? Are you leaving already? Matthew: Shall we tell him the goodn news? Nikki: Matthew's asked me to move in with him. And I've said yes!
Jimmy's face dropped.
Matthew: Whats up? Aren't you happy for us? Jimmy: Of course I am! Congratulations! The drinks are on you. Matthew: Don't worry. I'll be buying everyone a drink. Jimmy: I'll be off then. Someone needs to get some work done.
He walks back to the offices.
Matthew: He didn't seem too pleased did he? Nikki: Maybe it bought it all back. You know with his wife and stuff. Matthew: Maybe. Shall we go home? Nikki: Lets.
They both walk into Victoria Cottage. Nikki is so happy that she finally has a place called home.

It was the same evening in The Woolpack. Carl was at the bar talking to Chas.
Carl: So what time do you get off work? Chas: Not 'till later. Why? Carl: I was wondering if you wanted to do something. Chas: Like what? Carl: I dunno. Anything. We never get to spend time with eachother. Chas: I know babe. Look, I'll see if I can get the day off tomorrow. OK?
Carl smiled at her. Matthew and Nikki walk in. They go up to Carl and Chas.
Matthew: Alright little brother? Carl: Fine. Why are you sounding so cheerful? Matthew: Bottle of champagne Chas. Chas: Why? Carl: Celebrating something? Nikki: Matthew has asked me to move in with him. Carl: Seriously? Matthew: Yeah! Why not? Carl: No reason. Chas: I'll bring it over.
Matthew and Nikki go over to a table.
Nikki: Why did Carl sound so surprised? Matthew: I dunno, maybe he's glad I've finally found a girl to settle down with. Nikki: What about you fiancè?
Matthew quickly looked over at her. He was trying to think of something to say.
Matthew: I meant since she died. I'll be back in a minute.
Matthew walks off in the direction of the toilets. Nikki goes up to the bar to talk to Chas and Carl.
Carl: Congratulations. Never thought I'd see it happen! Nikki: Do you want to join us? Carl: I dunno. Me and Matthew don't always get on that well. Nikki: So? Maybe its time you buried the hatchet. Chas: Yeah. Go on love. Carl: Ok then. Chas: Great. Could you take this over then?
She hands Carl the champagne. Carl looks at her and takes it.
Nikki: How about you? Chas: Working. Look, are you sure you know what you are doing? Nikki: Matt isn't a monster. Chas: Yeah I know. But he has been out of order to Carl in the past. Nikki: Maybe Carl is partly to blame. All I know is that Matt loves me and I want to make this work. Him and Carl are talking aren't they?
She points to the table, where Matthew had just returned.
Chas: OK! Made your point.
Chas hands Nikki some glasses and walks back to the table.
Matthew: Its about time! Dying of thirst, I were!
He pours champagne for himself, Nikki and Carl.
Matthew: Cheers! Carl: Congratulations! Nikki: To a new life!
They all raise their glasses. Jimmy walks in.
Nikki: Care to join us? Jimmy: No thanks. Pint please.
Chas pours Jimmys drink. Jimmy pays her and takes it over to a different table.
Carl: What's up with him? I've never seen him as miserable! Matthew: I dunno. He's been feeling really sorry for himself. It's pathetic! Nikki: Shut up you two. I'll go and speak to him.
She walks over to Jimmy.
Nikki: Fancy a glass of champagne? Jimmy: No. Nikki: Why are you being like this? Jimmy: Like what? Nikki: Miserable.
Jimmy looks up at Nikki.
Jimmy: Can you blame me?
Nikki sits down.
Nikki: You can't be miserable forever. Jimmy: Why not? My wife has left me and won't come back. Oh, and you've just moved in with my brother, after you spent the night with me! Nikki: Last night was a mistake. It can't happen again. Jimmy: What gets me is how last night you were saying it wasn't serious between you two. Next thing I know is that you've moved in with him! Nikki: Lst night I realised that I was in love with Matthew. I wasn't going to tell him but he told me this morning. Jimmy: So? It happens just as I have it rock bottom. Nikki: Why would you hit rock bottom over that? Jimmy: Not you! Well, sort of. I got a phone call from my wife's lawyer this morning. She wants a divorce. Nikki: I'm sorry. At least you know that and you can move on. Jimmy: And know I have to be pally with my younger brother. And I have just spent the night with his girlfriend. And I don't like him very much! Nikki: You won't say anything about last night, will you? Jimmy: No. It was a mistake. I dont want to hurt him like I have been hurt by my wife, even if I don't like him very much. Anyway, he wouldn't believe me. Nikki: So, join us for a drink. Please. Move on. Think postive. Jimmy: OK then. Just one mind.
Nikki and Jimmy walk over to Matthew and Carl. Nikki is thankful that everything is working out for her.

It was two weeks after Nikki had moved in with Matthew. Jimmy had contacted his lawyers to get his divorce to Sadie moving. He was still moping around, feeling sorry for himself, much to the annoyance of Matthew. There had been a lot of talk about the two King brothers, Jimmy's divorce and Matthew moving in with Nikki. This was dominating village gossip and most people had forgotten about Frank Bernard.
It was early morning and Matthew was in the living room of Victoria Cottage. He was pacing up and down, agitated at something. Nikki had just walked down the stairs in her dressing gown.
Nikki: What's the matter darling? Matthew: It's nothing. Nikki: Why are you pacing up and down? Come on. Matthew: I've got this meeting today. Nikki: You've had lots of meetings... Matthew: None as important as this! Really important to the business! Nikki: Just calm down! I've never seen you like this. Matthew: Sorry. I dunno why I'm getting like this. Nikki: Maybe it's your age! Matthew: I'll pretend I didn't hear that!
He goes over to Nikki and kisses her.
Nikki: So what time does this meeting finish? Matthew: Dunno. Probably not 'till later this afternoon. Nikki: Pity. I wanted to do something tonight. Matthew: Like what? Look, how about when I get back tonight, we go into Hotten. Or have a nice quite meal and an early night? Nikki: Thats up to you!
She smiles at him. Nikki goes into the kitchen to make some breakfast.
Matthew: So, what are you up to today? Nikki: Going into Hotten. See if there are any jobs going. Matthew: I told you. I've got a job in the offices going. Why don't you just work for me? Nikki: No. I don't want work and home life colliding. Matthew: OK then. Whatever makes you happy.
He looks at his watch.
Matthew: Look love, I've gotta go. I'll see you later. Nikki: Good luck!
Matthew kisses Nikki and walks out of the door.

Two hours later Nikki was walking out of Victoria Cottage. She was walking over to the bus-stop, when she suddenly heard a man's voice say her name.
Man: Nikki. Nikki!
Nikki turned around. She sees a fairly tall man standing behind her with dark hair and dark eyes. He was wearing casual clothes- jeans and a white t-shirt. Over his t-shirt was a big coat. He looked to be in his early to mid thirties.
Nikki: Andrew! What are you doing here? Andrew: What do you think? Are you busy? Nikki: Yes. I am actually. Go home. Andrew: Not until I have spoken to you. Nikki: Fine. As long as you leave afterwards. Come in.
She leads him back to Victoria Cottage.
Nikki: So what do you want? Andrew: To speak to my lovely wife. Nikki: Not for much longer! Andrew: So, how did you afford this place? Nikki: Where's Amanda? Andrew: Like you care! You left me with nothing. I woke up one morning and all the wardrobes we empty! No note. No sign. No nothing! Why? We were happy. Well, I was happy. We have a little daughter and you left us! And you left us with nothing! I go to the bank to get some money to do the shopping, and most of that had gone too! Nikki: Look, I needed to sort my head out. You say you were happy, well I wasn't. You took no notice of me. You didn't listen to me. Andrew: I loved you. I still do. You're a mother. Our daughter is only 18 months old. She doesn't know you. Nikki: I was sick and tired of you going out every night, whether it was after work or with your mates, leaving me to look after the baby. I tried to tell you but you wouldn't listen! Andrew: Well, I've had to do it for six months! Nikki: Oh, and you need a break! Andrew: I love my daughter! Nikki: And you think I don't. Not a day goes by when I don't think about her! How did you know I was here anyway? Andrew: Your mum. She told me. So how much was this place? Nikki: I dunno.
Andrew looked around the room. He noticed some of Matthew's clothes.
Andrew: Who else lives here? Why are there mens clothes over that chair? Nikki: There my boyfriends.
Andrew looks at Nikki. His face drops.
Andrew: Boyfriend? You're having me on! Nikki: No! Andrew: You're married! Nikki: I thought my mum told you. I want a divorce. Andrew: What's his name? Nikki: Matthew. And I love him. Andrew: What about me? How long have you been with this Matthew? Nikki: About two months. Look, I didn't want it to happen. But he kept on speaking to me and being friendly as soon as I walked into the village, literally. I was going to come back to you. But when he asked me out I started to have second thoughts. He's gorgeous. Andrew: So, he's nice looking. It doesn't mean you love him. Nikki: I do love him. It's not just his looks, he's a really decent guy. Look, I'm very busy. Go home. I'll speak to you later.
Andrew suddenly stopped being upset and turned angry.
Andrew: Oh no! I'm not going anywhere! Amanda is staying with your parents. I might stay here for a while. See what Matthew is like. Nikki: Don't you dare! Just go! Andrew: No! I'm off to the B and B. I think I noticed one around here.
Andrew walks out of the door with a big smirk on his face. Nikki can't believe that her new life is being disrupted by her husband.

It was 9pm that evening. Nikki was sitting on the sofa in Victoria Cottage. She was thinking about what had happened that morning. She was deep in thought whaen the door opened.
Matthew: Hi love!
Nikki was still deep in thought and didn't notice Matthew come in, well, she wasn't listening to him.
Matthew: Nikki!
Nikki suddenly noticed Matthew and looked up.
Nikki: Hiya babe. How was your meeting? Matthew: What's up with you? Nikki: Nothing. So.... Matthew: You were a bit distant when I came in. Nikki: No. Just tired. I was woken up early by some bloke pacing up and down the living room. Matthew: Sorry. Nikki: So, how was your meeting?
Matthew went into the kitchen and got a drink out of the fridge.
Matthew: It went well. Really well actually. Except at the start. Jimmy walked in late, with a hangover! He is really winding me up at the moment! Not good for the business. Nikki: How would you feel if you were getting divorced? Matthew: Well, I wouldn't be how he is, that's for sure! Anyway, why are you taking his side? He nearly cost the company a business deal today! Nikki: Is that all you think about, the business? You know, there are more important things in life! Matthew: What is up with you? I'm just saying.... Nikki: Yeah, and I'm just saying give him a break. I'm not taking his side but he's going through a hard time at the moment.
Matthew goes and sits down next to Nikki. He was suprisingly calm.
Matthew: All I'm saying is that he's a grown man. Nikki: Look, I'm not arguing with you Matt! Matthew: OK, OK. Are you sure you're alright? Nikki: I'm fine! Matthew: Time of the month is it?
Nikki glares at Matthew as he laughs at this comment.
Matthew: Look, I'm sorry. Lets change the subject. So, did you get a job? Nikki: Sorry? Matthew: You said you were going into Hotten to see if there were any jobs. Nikki: Oh yeah. Erm... There weren't any. I'll go back next week. Matthew: I don't even see why you need a job. I mean, you're going out with me. Nikki: It's just what I want to do. I want to earn my own money instead of scrounging off my boyfriend. Matthew: Well, whatever you want.
He puts his arm around Nikki. She kisses him.
Matthew: Fancy going to the pub? I did seal a big business deal today. That must be a good reason to celebrate with my girlfriend. Nikki: You know what, I don't really fancy it. I'm really tired. Matthew: Look, I know I said we would go out tonight, but the meeting went on longer that expected. Nikki: It's OK. Really. Matthew: How about tomorrow night? I promise. Nikki: Sure. Matthew: I could stay in with you if you like. We could both have an early night.
He kisses Nikki.
Nikki: No, you head off to the pub. I'll be boring anyway. Have fun! Matthew: If you insist. Alright, I'll see you later.
They kiss one final time before Matthew gets to his feet. He puts his jacket on.
Nikki: Love you.
They smile at eachother and then he walks out of the door.

The Woolpack was full of regulars, and there was the new face of Andrew. He was at the bar. Matthew walked in.
Matthew: Pint please Diane. Diane: Coming up.
Diane poured Matthew's drink. He handed her a crisp note.
Matthew: Have one yourself. Diane: Thanks. So, where's Nikki tonight?
Andrew looked up. He gave Matthew a scathing look, but Matthew didn't notice.
Diane: Had a row? Matthew: Course not. She's a bit tired and went to bed early. She was acting really weird when I got home. She might be feeling unwell. I dunno. Diane: Well, have you asked her? Matthew: She said it was nothing. Diane: That might be the case. Maybe you're over reacting. Matthew: I don't think so. You should have seen her. Diane: Maybe she just missed you today. I mean, you are with eachother all the time. Attached to the hip! Matthew: Maybe.
Diane walked away and poured a drink for herself. Andrew was still looking at Matthew. Matthew no noticed him.
Matthew: Is there a problem? Andrew: Women trouble? Matthew: No, not really. What's it got to do with you anyway? Andrew: Nothing. Its just I understand. My wife and I have just had an argument. Matthew: Wife?
Andrew points at his wedding ring.
Matthew: I've never seen you before. Andrew: No. I came here so the missus couldn't find me! Matthew: Well, let me buy you a drink. Diane, same again for.. Andrew: Andrew. Matthew: Pleased to meet you. Yeah, my girlfriend was acting really weird tonight. Andrew: Why? Matthew: I dunno. Andrew: I wouldn't worry too much about about it mate. You sort of get used to it after seven years of marriage. Have you ever married? Matthew: No, not me. Never found the need to. Andrew: It sounds as if you're not ruling it out. Take my advice, you're best out of it. Matthew: It's a bit early to be thinking about it with me and my girlfriend. Andrew: Sorry. I don't know your name. Matthew: It's Matthew. Or Matt. Andrew: You know what I say. Leave her to it. All women are the same. Matthew: I suppose so. You know what, I reckon we could be good mates. Andrew: I'll drink to that.
They both raise their glasses as Andrew looks very pleased he seems to have Matthew on side- for the moment.

It was the morning after Matthew had met Andrew. Nikki hadn't slept well that night, also because Matthew hadn't come home. She went downstairs to make herself a cup of coffee and she noticed Matthew lying on the sofa.
Nikki: Matt?
Matthew necer heard her. She started nudging him.
Nikki: Matt!
Matthew woke up.
Nikki: Why dodn't you come to bed last night? Matthew: I got in quite late and didn't wanna wake you. Nikki: Look at the state of you! Matthew: Yeah, well, I'll have a shower in a minute. Nikki: So, did you have a fun night? Matthew: Yeah, it was OK. Well, for the Woolpack anyway. Nikki: Did you miss me? Matthew: Of course I did. Actually, I met someone. Nikki: What? Another woman? Matthew: No. A bloke. We ended up talking and drinking till all hours. Nikki: Wow! My boyfriends turning gay! Matthew: Not funny! No, we were talking about you and his wife. They'd just had an argument, you see. Nikki: He sounds, well.... fun. What's his name? Matthew: Andrew.
Nikki looks at Matthew quickly.
Matthew: I said we could have a quick drink with him this afternoon. Then we can go out after. Nikki: Me? Why? Matthew: We were talking about you and he said it would be great to meet you. I promise you'll like him. Nikki: Only a quick drink? Matthew: Promise. Anyway, I'll want you all to myself tonight.
They kiss eachother. Then Nikki goes and makes her coffee whilst Matthew goes and has a shower.
--------------------------------------------
It was late that morning. Matthew was at work and Nikki was sitting on the sofa of Victoria Cottage, watching television. There was a knock on the door, so she got up and answered it. Andrew was stood on the doorstep.
Nikki: What do you want? Leave me alone. Andrew: I want a quick word.
Andrew barges past Nikki.
Nikki: Get out! Andrew: I met your boyfriend last night. Thought you were getting fed up with him. Nikki: Yeah, well I was a bit out of order to him last night. Andrew: What do you mean he's gorgeous? Nikki: Well, he's a damn sight better than you! Andrew: He had a nice suit on. Designer by the looks of it. Had a bit of cash too. Nikki: Don't you dare! Andrew: I need some money. After all, you took all of it. Is that the only reason you agreed to go out with him? Nikki: How dare you! He makes me feel good about myself. He cares for me. You never gave me any of that! Andrew: You get me £250,000 in a weeks time and I'll settle the divorce and won't tell him anything. Nikki: I can't do that. It isn't my money! Andrew: Then I'll tell him everything. Simple. Nikki: I'd rather you'd do that. I'm gonna tell him anyway. Andrew: In a week I want it. I take it he told you we're going out for a drink. Nikki: Don't expect me to turn up.
Andrew laughs and walks out of the door, with Nikki stood there in disbelief.

It was about 4pm. Matthew had just walked in from a hard day at the office.
Matthew: Hey love! Nikki: Alright! How was your day? Matthew: Busy. Yours? Nikki: OK I suppose. What time are we going? Matthew: Soon. I've just gotta get changed. Nikki: OK. Look, I'll meet you there. I'll get the first round in. Matthew: Sounds good to me!
He leans over and kisses her. Matthew goes upstairs and Nikki walks out the fromt door. When she gets outside, sheis confronted by the faces of Viv and Steph.
Nikki: Oh look, its the terrible twosome! Viv: I saw some bloke come out of your house today.
She sounded estatic when she said this.
Nikki: Yep. His names Matthew. Steph: Oh no, It wasn't him! Viv: Tall. Dark haired. I noticed he was wearing a wedding ring. Steph: Tut tut. Been playing away with a married man? Bored of Matthew already? Nikki: Actually, it was a friend of Matt's. Some business needed sorting. But I don't suppose you's know anything about that because your businesses aren't all that. Viv: Right! You're barred from my shop and cafe! Nikki: Oh no! What shall I do?
She had a tone of sarcasm in her voice.
Steph: I'm sure Matthew will be pleased to know you've been seeing a married man. Nikki: OK then. You tell him. Tell him Andrew came round. Lets see what he says. Who will he believe, a couple of gossips who share half a brain or his girlfriend?
Steph and Viv walk off with faces like thunder.
Nikki walked into the pub.
Nikki: Can I have a pint and a vodka please Bob? Bob: Coming up. No Matt? Nikki: He'll be along in a minute. Bob: Oh. So how's it going with him then? Nikki: Good. You know, I was just confronted by your wife outside. And she barred me! Bob: Really. What did you say to her? Nikki: Nothing, at first. She accused me of having an affair! Bob: I'll have a word. Nikki: No, don't bother. It's just I don't like accusations being thrown at me in the street. Bob: Look, I'm really sorry.
She payed Bob for the drinks. Matthew walked in.
Matthew: Only two drinks? What about Andrew? Nikki: I dunno what he drinks. Matthew: Another pint please Bob.
Bob pours another pint. Matthew gave him some loose change.
Nikki: So, he hasn't turned up has he? Matthew: Be a bit patient. You're worse than me! Nikki: So, what does he look like? Matthew: You'll see yourself now.
Andrew had just walked in the pub.
Matthew: Hiya! I've just got you a drink. Andrew: Cheers! Matthew: So, where's your wife? Andrew: She decided not to come.
He gave Nikki a quick glance.
Matthew: Nikki, this is Andrew. Andrew, this is my girlfriend Nikki. Andrew: I've heard lots about you.
He holds hois hand out to shake Nikkis. Nikki just taps his hand.
Nikki: Pleasure. Andrew: So how long have you been together? Matthew: A couple of months. Nikki: Yeah. And I'm very happy! Andrew: Well, isn't that good to hear. Matthew: So, do you plan on coming here regularly? Andrew: I dunno yet. See what the locals are like first! So, what do you do for a living Nikki? Nikki: Nothing, yet. Matthew: But that doesn't matter because I've got all the money we need. Andrew: Lucky you! I have to earn my money.
Nikki gives him a nasty look. There was an uneasy silence between the three of them.
Matthew: Cheers! Andrew: Cheers! Nikki: Whatever.
Matthew looks at Nikki. He quickly downs his pint and turns to Nikki.
Matthew: Can I speak to you for a second love? Nikki: Sure.
They both walk out of the pub.
Matthew: Do you have some sort of a problem where you can't be nice to people when you first meet them? Nikki: What? Matthew: You were really nasty in there. You don't even know him! Nikki: Neither do you! You've only met him once!
They hadn't noticed that Andrew had followe them.
Andrew: Actually Matt, she does know me better than you. Matthew: You only met five minutes ago.
There was some confusion in Matthews voice.
Andrew: You see. Nikki has known me for a rather long time. My wife of seven years, well you're living with her.

Matthew stood there in shock, with Nikki reeling at what Matthew had said. Then Matthew started laughing.
Matthew: You're winding me up. Andrew: Afraid not.
Matthew looks at Nikki. She's staring at the ground.
Matthew: Nikki?
Nikki didn't look up. She continued to stare at the pavement.
Matthew: Nikki! Don't ignore me! I want an answer!
He was starting to get angry. Nikki looked up at him.
Nikki: I'm sorry.
Matthew faced turned from confusion to anger.
Matthew: And were you planning on telling me? Nikki: Yes. Matthew: When? Today? Tomorrow? When? Nikki: I don't know! But we need to talk. Matthew: I know we do! Right now! And you.
Hw points at Andrew and leads the two of them back to Victoria Cottage.
Nikki: You just couldn't keep your trap shut could you. Andrew: You said you were going to tell him. I just hurried things along. He would have reacted like this anyway. Nikki: So! I wanted to tell him in my own time.
Matthew opens the door to Victoria Cottage. Nikki closes the door behind her.
Matthew: OK. I want the full story. Seven years? Nikki: Yeah. We got together about ten years ago. Matthew: And you still agreed to go out with me. Nikki: I'm filing for a divorce. Andrew: She probably only went out with you because you're loaded. Matthew: I didn't ask you! Is there anything else I should know about? Andrew: We have a daughter.
Matthew is stunned at this.
Matthew: What? Nikki: She's 18 months old. Her name's Amanda. Andrew: And to be honest I can't see you playing the dating dad! Matthew: Shut up you! Get out of my house! Andrew: I'll only leave when my wife does. Nikki:I ain't going with you! Matthew: She's my girlfriend and I want to speak to her. Andrew: Well, I'm not going anywhere. Not without Nikki. We're going back home to see our daughter and live as a family again, which is more than you'll have!
Matthew goes over to Andrew and punches him square across the face, then pins him against the wall.
Nikki: Calm down!
Matthews eyes are wide open with anger and hatred.
Matthew: I told you to get out of my house. I don't like it when people don't listen to me. I get a bit upset. Now you leave me to speak to Nikki and I don't wanna see your ugly mug again. Otherwise, I'll kill you. Andrew: You think you scare me. I get threats all the time. Matthew: This isn't a threat. I don't make threats. This is a promise. I'll kill you if I see you again.
He lets go of Andrew and he walks out of the door. Nikki is really shocked at what Matthew has just said. Matthew turns and smiles at her.
Nikki: That was a bit drastic. Matthew: Oh, I'm sorry. I don't think it was. So tell me everything. And I want the truth. Nikki: What do you want to know? Matthew: I just said. Everything. Nikki: What does it matter? I married him and now I want to divorce him. I love you not him. Matthew: LIAR!
The conversation was getting quite heated, with shouting from noth of them.
Nikki: You want to talk about lying Matt. I'm not the only one who has lied! Yeah, all these business deals, how many of them are dodgy? Matthew: Well, thats got nothing to do with you! I never lied to you! Nikki: Now whos lying, again?! What about your fiancè? That was a lie! Matthew: No it wasn't! Nikki: You really think I'm that stupid? It was a lie Matt! Jimmy told me. And now I think about it, I haven't seen any proof she existed. Matthew: You believe Jimmy? He's going mental! Nikki: Certainly not as mntal as you! Promising to kill someone. You want the truth, then I'll give you the truth: I left Andrew six months ago. I was left to look after Amanda every night and I couldn't cope. I took the money from our bank account. I went travelling for a bit. I came here and met you. That's why I was mean to you when I first came here, because I'm married. So we went out and you told me some made up story about a fiancè and I fell for it. And I fell for you. A month later Jimmy told me the truth. I spent the night with him. The day after I moved in with you. Then my husband turns up. Matthew: You spent the night with my brother. Nikki: We were drunk. Matthew: You bitch! Get out! I can't look at you! Just get out of my sight. Nikki: What if I don't? What if I wanna stay here and fight for you? I love you. Matthew: You lied to me. You're married. You're a mother. You slept with my brother. Get out!
Nikki goes to walk out of the door. She stops and turns around.
Nikki: I'm sorry.
She walks out of the door. Matthew collapses against the wall with tears running down his face.

Two months later and things still weren't any better for Matthew. The word had spread around the village that Nikki was married, making Matthew the main topic for gossip. He and Jimmy had fallen out over Nikki, with Jimmy saying that he was behaving like an idiot, considering they weren't going out for that long, and that she was a liar and cheat. Tom still wasn't back and had heard everything, so he decided to leave Jimmy in charge until he got back, which was another reason why Matthew was angry with Jimmy. Carl and Chas were still very happy together. So happy that they got engaged and Chas was enjoying all of the attention.
Elsewhere, Pearl and Len had returned to the village after a long break. They were still getting abuse from Viv, but Pearl had decided there was more to life and she wasn't going to be driven out of her home again by anyone. She seemed to be getting on with everyone else, and had forgiven them for what they said and did. Edna was sure to catch her up on the latest gossip, especially Matthew and Nikki. She was glad to be back, but was missing Frank.
----------------------------------
It was a cold afternoon and Matthew was sat in the living room of Victoria Cottage, looking miserable. He had a bottle of wine in front of him and about 4 cans of lagar. There was a knock on the door, but Matthew just stayed where he was. Then the voice of Carl could be heard.
Carl: Matt, let me in. Come on!
Matthew got up and answered the door.
Matthew: What?
He moves to the side and lets Carl in.
Carl: What are you doing? Matthew: Sitting in my house, having a drink.
Carl had suddenly realised where he was, and was looking around him. The colour in his face seemed to drain a little. Matthew could tell what he was thinking.
Matthew: Oh, get a grip. It happened a year ago! Carl: You're telling me to get a grip! Look at yourself! She was married. Move on! Matthew: I can't. I love her. You wouldn't understand. You're the one that did the cheating while you were married, and now you've got engaged! What are you trying to do, rub my nose in it? Carl: I came to ask you if you fancied a drink. And when are you going to make it up with Jim? Matthew: I have no intention of doing that. He slept with my girlfriend. Carl: Yeah. He wasn't the only one to blame. And she was already married anyway. She's probably back with him right now, playing happy families! Matthew: Just leave me alone. I might come along later if I feel up to it. So long as my lovely older brother isn't there. Carl: Fine. Just get your act together.
Carl walks out of the door and off to the Woolpack. Matthew sits back down and throws an empty can at the wall, clearly distressed.

It was a busy evening at the Woolpack, but that didn't stop Chas talking to Carl.
Chas: Look, its not your problem. Just leave him to it, he'll be back to normal in a couple of weeks. Carl: No he won't. He's never let anything get to him like this before. She left two months ago. Chas: And I was the one tell her to be careful. Could never have imagined it!
Carl looks at her but doesn't say anything.
Chas: Anyway, you've got enough on your plate. Like preparing a wedding. Carl: Not now, eh. I'm not in the mood. Chas: Carl! He'll sort it out in his own way. Carl: Yeah, and that's what worries me.
Jimmy had just walked in the pub.
Jimmy: What are you talking about? Carl: Nothing that concernes you. Jimmy: Want a drink? Two pints Chas. Carl: I never said I wanted one! Jimmy: By looks of you, you could do with one. Carl: I'm not the problem. When are you going to speak to Matt? Jimmy: Why should I? It's his problem, not mine. Anyway, I've got things to deal with, like the business. When he comes forward, I'll speak to him. Carl: I'm stuck in the middle here! This isn't fair! Jimmy: Since when do you care about Matt. All he does is put you down. He does it with both of us. Carl: This is ridicu.......
Carl stopped talking suddenly. Jimmy turned around and had notices that Matthew had just walked in the pub.
He walks up to the bar, the opposite end to Carl and Jimmy.
Matthew: Pint and a vodka, Bob.
Bob pours Matthew his drinks and gets a load of change from Matthew. Matthew downs his vodka.
Matthew: Another. Bob: Shouldn't you take it easy. You look like you've had a few already. Matthew: Just a vodka. I don't need telling what to do!
Bob pours Matthew another and keeps quiet. Carl walks over to Matthew. Bob hands Matthew his vodka, but Carl reaches it before Matthew.
Carl: I'll take that. Matthew: Carl, don't be a prat! Give it! Carl: You don't even drink vodka! Matthew: It's never too late to start. Carl: This is pathetic. Now that we are all here, why don't you have a word with Jim? Matthew: Get lost! No way. Anyway, it looks like he needs you.
Jimmy and Matt are throwing daggers at eachother and Carl sighs.
Jimmy: Look at him! He's rather pathetic!
Jimmy says it load enough so that Matthew can here. Matthew walks over to Jimmy and gets right in his face.
Matthew: You were like this, remember! Jimmy: Only difference is she was my wife. Matthew: Yeah, and Nikki was my girlfriend. Jimmy: You know she never loved you. You could tell. Matthew: Your wife only married you because of money. Because you were the older one. I mean, why else would she marry someone like you? You're aging, old and boring, not to mention ugly!
Jimmy looks at Matthew. His face was read with anger, but he kept his cool.
Jimmy: Yeah well, at least I could satisfy Sadie when I wanted to. You know, in the bedroom. Come to think of it, I probably statisfied Nikki more than you could.
At this, Matthew's temper got the better of him and he punched Jimmy in the face. Jimmy went flying over a table. The pub had gone quiet, with all eyes fixed on Matthew.
Matthew: Come on! Get up!
He was shouting at the top of his voice. Jack and Ashley help Jimmy up.
Matthew: You even need people to help you up! Your nothing but weak!
Matthew turns his back to walk out the door. What he hadn't expected was Jimmy patting him on the back. Matthew turned around and Jimmy punched Matthew harder than he had been hit. Now there was an untidy brawl in the middle of the pub.
Jimmy: Not so weak now am I! Carl: Oi! Stop it!
Carl, Jarvis, Ashley, Jack, Simon and Bob had got between the fighting King brothers. Simon and Jack got hold of Jimmy, whilst Carl, Jarvis and Bob had hold of Matthew. Ashley was stood in between all of them.
Ashley: Now, stop it! This is a friendly community! Just calm down! I don't know what this is about, but you're destroying a peaceful atmosphere! Jimmy: It's him! He's a wild animal! Matthew: If you ever speak to me again, you'll be sorry!
Matthew walks out of the pub, with the locals shocked at the actions of the King brothers, with all of them now looking at Jimmy.
Carl: Go home. I'll be over soon.
Jimmy walks out of the pub, with Carl now getting everyone's attention.
Carl: I apologise for what you have just witnessed and I'll pay for any damage caused.
Carl follows Jimmy out of the pub into the street.
