As Carl stood watching Ross and Chas also over each other outside the vets, he couldnt help but feel jealous. This was the woman that he had once planned to marry, settle down and to have children with, the woman that he had loved so much, but now it was too late. Carl knew that he couldnt hurt Chas with what he had done, so thats why he had finished the relationship, he knew he was cold and hateful in the way he did it, but that was the only way to make sure she never came back, because if she had of done, he was sure he couldnt have of broken her heart again. So that was that, he had to leave her alone, to lead her new life, without him. Carl slowly walked away as Chas and Ross dissapeared into the vets, well atleast she is happy, he thought to himself.
Later that evening Carl entered the Woolpack, he needed a drink after his latest row with Matt. He sat on his own drinking his pint when he noticed this Ross guy back, but this time he was all over Lexi. Whats this all about, he thought. Ross then left and Carl called Lexi over,
'So whats going on with you and that guy then?' Carl asked,
'Oh not much' Lexi said, 'just seeing how it goes.'
'But you are like together yeah?' Carl questioned,
'basically' Lexi smiled. Carl just sat there whilst Lexi went behind the bar to start her shift, he could have said to Lexi right there and then that he had seen Ross and Chas earlier but he didnt want to, his main concern was with Chas. Carl knew that Chas had been hurt so many times by the men in her life, and he was one of them, he just couldnt bare to see her hurt again.
The next day Carl left Home Farm to go to a meeting in Hotten. He stopped in the village to grab the morning paper and a bottle of water, this was like a ritual to him as he did it every day. As he was walking out of the door, he bumped into someone and dropped his paper.
'O sorry' he said, then he looked up, it was Chas.
'Dont worry about it' Chas said and went to move past.
'Look Chas can i have a word please' Carl asked,
'No sorry im busy' Chas said avoiding Carl's eye contact.
'Please' Carl almost whispered, now looking directly into her eyes.
'Fine' Chas said, and they made there way into the cafe.
'Right now what is it you want' said Chas. Carl didnt know what to say, who was he to get involved in her love life? but he thought that she had the right to know.
'Its about you and that Ross guy' Carl started,
'here we go' Chas sarcastically butted in.
'Look i just thought you should know something, well i dont really know how to say this, but you know Chas he's not a nice guy, he's not what you think',
'o just spit it out Carl!' Chas said getting impatient.
'He's two timing you' Carl said quietly 'with Lexi'. Carl sat there in silence, he could see that Chas was getting angry just by the way she was looking at him.
'I just thought you should know' Carl said. It finally got to Chas and she exploded,
'Who the hell do you think you are coming in here and telling me this! Can you not bare to see me happy? I have finally found someone who i really care about and then you have to go and make up these stupid lies about him! For your information me and Ross are very happy together, and we dont need people like you sticking your oar in! Just leave me alone, i cant even bare to look at you!' with that Chas stormed out. Everyone in the cafe has witnessed Chas's outburst and were watching to see Carl's reaction, but they were not going to get one. Carl stood up calmly and walked out in silence.

Chas was furious, why did he always have to ruin things? Well not this time she thought, he was not going to ruin this for her. Chas made her way to Ross's, he had told her that he was stuck in doing paperwork all morning and not to bother him, but she just needed to talk to someone, she needed the reassurance that they were happy together. Chas knocked on the door, but no-one answered, she then opened it, she knew Ross wouldnt mind, she had been to his house load, and also he was sharing with her family so she saw no reason to not let herself in.
'Ross' she shouted, 'Babe its me, thought i would come over for some cheering up'. Chas heard a thump upstairs,
'Ross is that you up there?....Can you come down please?' Just then Ross began to come down the stairs buttoning up his shirt, 'Alright darling, whats up?'. Chas thought it was slightly weird the way Ross was acting but she had more important things on her mind.
'Well you will never guess what Carl has been saying to me' Chas started, but her words trailed off as a half dresses Lexi appeared.
'Hey Chas, look i know we had a pact and everythin but me and Ross are really happy' Lexi said, she knew that she would upset her friend by going with Ross but she thought she was entitled to some happiness. Chas just stared at Ross,
'Are you going to tell her or shall i?' Chas said, tears filling up her eyes as she realised she was about to get hurt all over again.
'Tell me what?' Lexi asked.
'O forget it, im gone' Chas shouted and walked out, leaving Ross to tell Lexi what had really been going on.
As Chas ran out of the house she broke down. Why did this always happen to her? She thought she would never be happy after Carl, but she was starting to find it again, but o no things could never go right for her. She began to walk out into the village, her make up running from all the tears. she went and sat on the bench, she couldnt believe she had been made to look such a fool again. It began to rain. O great Chas thought, can things get any worse?
Chas sat in the cold, wet weather for 10 minutes, she was shaking and her clothes were completly drenched, but she didnt care. She carried on sitting in silence, her tears washed out by the rain, when a car pulled up.
'Chas?' a familiar voice said.

Carl was on his way back from hotten, he had cancelled his meeting as he knew that it would be a waste of time, he was in no mood to talk business. The conversation he had had earlier with Chas kept running through his mind, why did he have to tel her? She probably hated him 100 times more than she previously had now. Well i have done my bit Carl thought, she didnt believe me, but no-one can say i didnt try.
As Carl began to drive into the village, he saw someone sitting alone on a bench. 'What the hell are they doing sitting out in this weather?' Carl said aloud. As he pulled up nearer he suddenly realised who it was.
'Chas?' Carl wound down his window and shouted out to her. Chas wasnt responding, she seemed lost in her own world. It was obvious to Carl she was upset and the mascara smeared around her eyes showed him she had been crying. 'Chas!' Carl shouted again, willing her to respond. 'Leave me alone Carl', Chas finally said, she couldnt bare to look at him. Carl wound up his window and began to drive off. But something held him back. ' O for christ sake' Carl said getting out of the car, why did she still have such a hold on him? He went over to the bench and sat down next to Chas. ' I said leave me alone' Chas said, 'Well im not leaving you outside in this weather or in this state' Carl said to her. 'Look i just want to be left by myself' Chas whispered, the tears had began to flow again and she hated people seeing her this vulnerable. 'All i want to do is help, i will drive you where ever you want, but im not leaving you like this' Carl said, looking directly into her eyes. 'Ok' Chas whispered back, and they both walked over to the car.

Carl and Chas sat in silence inside the car. Chas didnt want anyone to see her in that state so she just wanted to sit for a while until she had figured out what to do. She would have sat in the rain to do this, but she was pleased she was now in the dry. 'Well i bet your pleased with yourself', Chas finally broke the silence. 'What?' Carl asked. 'You were right Carl, Ross was seein Lexi too, so why dont you give yourself a big pat on the back! because as usual im made to look a fool and doesnt everyone just love to tell me that!' Carl just looked at Chas, what she had just said had really hurt him. 'Believe it or not Chas i didnt tell you about Ross to hurt you or to humiliate you, i was concerned that you were going out with such a creep and i didnt want you to see you get hurt.' The two fell back into silence. Deep down Chas knew that Carl was just looking out for her, but after everything he had done, she couldnt help but to not trust him. 'Sorry' Chas said, 'I know you wernt doing it out of spite or anything'. 'Its ok' Carl replied. 'Right so where do you want to go?'

'Just take me home' Chas said softly, and a single tear ran down her cheek. Carl hated seeing her like this, how could someone treat her this way? Carl then realised that this is exactly what he had done to her, well he hadnt been seeing another woman, but he had ended the relationship horribly. He didnt regret breaking up with Chas as he knew he didnt want to see her get hurt by the mess he had caused, he just wished that he could have done it in a nicer way, but again he knew that he had to make sure she never came back. Carl started the car and made his way to the Dingle's, when they finally arrived Chas got out of the car but turned back to look at Carl. 'Thanks for today, i owe you' she said, 'you dont owe me anything' Carl replied and gave her a little smile. 'It will all be ok, dont worry' he finally said. With that Carl drove away, as he was driving he looked back in his mirror to see Chas entering the house, its still there he thought, its still there.
Later that evening Carl was sitting in the Woolpack talking to Jimmy about a new contract that he was organising. Just then Chas came in. 'You're looking alot better now' Carl said, 'Can i get you a drink?' 'Yeah thanks' Chas replied. Just as Carl was ordering for Chas, Ross and Lexi walked in. The two walked in arm in arm, Lexi was laughing at something that Ross had just said and they both had seemed to forgotten the events of that morning. 'This is all i need' Chas said aloud, ' Just keep calm' Carl whispered back jokingly, 'whoops too late' Chas answered back. 'Well this looks very cosy' Chas had turned round and was talking to Lexi and Ross. 'Well me and Ross were talking and we decided that we didnt want to end what we had, so we have decided to give it another go' Lexi said. 'So your just gonna forget the fact that he was sleeping with me?' Chas gave Ross a dirty look as she said this. 'Look' Ross butted in, 'The only reason i was with you Chas was because i didnt know how serious things were gonna get with Lexi, do you really think i would have gone near you if i thought i could get her?' ' Well you seemed happy enought the other night' Chas said bitterly. 'I cant see what i ever saw in you, your a cheap nasty little cow who nobody wants, get use to it', Ross was about to go on to say something else, but Carl jumped up from his seat and pinned him against the wall. 'Who the hell gives you the right to talk to her like that? You dont know nothing about her, and you never will! You ever come near her again and it will be the last thing you do'. 'Carl leave it' Jimmy said as he was trying to pull Carl away, but Carl was not letting go, 'Do i make myself clear?' Carl whispered threateningly in Ross's ear, 'Crystal' Ross replied. Carl let go and watched as Ross and Lexi left the pub, as he turned around he saw Chas just staring at him. 'Why did you do that?' Chas asked, 'Cos i dont want to see you get hurt' Carl stated, sensing that everyone was looking at him Carl decided to leave, 'Look i'll see you later' and with that Carl left. Chas sat back down, she couldnt believe what Carl had just done, it had been months since they had said anything civil to each other, and now he was defending her in public, she just didnt understand.
Back at home farm Carl was pouring himself a drink, he couldnt believe how wound up he had gotten, just then Jimmy entered. 'Care to enlighten me on what just happened?' he asked. 'it was nothing' Carl replied, ' that Ross guy was doing the dirty on Chas so i put him straight, thats it'. 'Yeah but why did you do it, its none of your business anymore' jimmy said. 'So you're telling me if you saw Kelly getting some hassle off a guy you wouldnt have done the same thing as i did?' Carl asked, 'Yeah i would have done, but i would have only done it because i still love Kelly' Jimmy said. Carl just looked at Jimmy 'So you would do it for the same reason i did then'.

'What?' Jimmy asked, 'You still love Chas?, I thought you had gotten over all that'. 'The only reason i broke up with her was so she wouldnt get hurt by my whole mess, it doesnt mean i stopped loving her' Carl began to get upset, it was the first time in almost a year that he had finally admitted to himself that he was still in love with Chas. ''O mate come here' Jimmy said and pulled Carl into a hug. 'Well if you still want her, go get her' Jimmy said , ' I can't, theres still the chance of everything coming out about dad and i cant do that to her' Carl was still clutching hold of Jimmy as tears began to fill his eyes, ' Why did i have to do that to dad? If i had just left it then none of this would have hapenned, everything is my fault'. 'O christ what the hell have i walked into' said Matthew as he entered the room. 'Nothing' Carl quickly said as he pulled away from Jimmy and wiped his eyes. 'Im going out for a bit' Carl said and left the room. 'So come on then what was that all about Matthew asked Jimmy. 'Carl still loves Chas' Jimmy said, ' i had to tear him off this guy who had been messing Chas about in the woolie, and then we came home and he told me'. 'Well i cant say im exactly thrilled with his choices of women, but he keeps getting himself into such a state these days, he needs someone' Matt said, 'Well i dont think its gonna happen' Jimmy said, 'Carl said to me that he cant be with her cos he doesnt want to hurt her if this whole thing with dad comes out'. 'Well its never gonna come out is it' Matthew replied, 'and i will make sure of it'.

Carl walked out of Home Farm and down the long road leading to the village. He needed to clear his head, the near fight he had had with Ross kept replaying in his mind, he wished he had just stayed out of it. As he carried on walking he noticed a figure also walking along the road, heading in his direction, he knew instantly it was Chas. 'Hey' Chas called, 'I wasnt expecting to see you along here' Carl answered back. The two had finally come face to face and neither knew where to go next. ' Carl, i think we need to talk' Chas took control of the conversation. Carl looked at her, his eyes told her that he understood what the conversation was going to be about. 'I need to know why you did what you did with Ross today' Chas began, ' I just need to know why'. Carl knew he had to be careful with what he said next, ' I just dont like seeing you get hurt thats all'. 'Thats all?' Chas asked, 'So you dont have any feelings or anything still for me then?' Chas needed to ask this, she longed for Carl to say he still loved her, that he needed her and that he had attacked Ross coz he could not bare to see another man anywhere near her, but deep down she knew what he would say. 'No, i dont' Carl said quietly, ' I dont feel anything'. Carl couldnt believe he was saying this, he loved Chas so much, but he knew he could never tell her, it would bring her so much pain in the future. He had to lie, it was for her own good, he kept telling himself. 'Well as we have got that clear, i want you to know im leaving', Chas said. Carl's eyes darted from the ground and straight into Chas's. 'Leaving?' he asked. 'Yeah' Chas replied, 'Charity has landed herself some bloke who owns a load of clubs in Spain, and she said that theres a job out there for me if i want it'. 'Oh' Carl said, 'When do you leave?'. 'Tonight' Chas replied her voice slightly cracking as she could feel the emotion welling inside her. 'So soon?' Carl asked, he couldnt believe she was leaving, he had thought he would atleast see her even if he wasnt with her, but he had never expected this. 'Well its not as if i have anything keeping me around here' Chas said looking straight into Carl's eyes. He could see that she meant him, and he wanted so badly to ask her to stay, but he just couldnt do it. 'Right then' Chas said, 'See ya later, oh im having some drinks in the pub tonight to say goodbye, it would be nice if you came', ' I'll be there' Carl said, and with that they both carried on walking.
