It was the early hours of the morning, and still dark. Carl was awake, sitting up. He was looking over at Chas, who was curled up, asleep. She looked really sweet lying there – he wouldn’t have guessed she was so stubborn and difficult when she was awake. He smiled and turned the light off.

The next morning.

Chas: Where the hell have you put the frosted shreddies?

Carl: They’re at the back by the cornflakes.

Chas stretched up to reach when she got a twinge in her tummy.

Chas: Argh!!

Carl: What’s wrong?

Chas: Nothing, just feel a bit sick that’s all.

Carl: You look a bit ill, you feeling ok?

Chas: Yeah, I only feel sick, I’ll be fine.

Carl: Look, I’ll phone Paddy and tell him you’re ill.

Chas: I’m fine!

Carl: Yeah and turtles eat lettuce. Just stay here.

Chas: You’re just being…

Chas rushed off to the loo. When she came back she looked awful.

Carl: You’re taking the day off. No buts. And I’m gonna stay with you.

Chas sighed. He was so sweet when he was like this, but she didn’t want him to find out. Not yet.

Chas lay in bed, bored. She still felt tired but there was nothing wrong with her anymore. Carl walked in with a glass of water.

Carl: Hey gorgeous, you ok?

Chas: (joking) All the worse for seeing you, ugly.

Carl: Oi!! Everyone knows I won a beauty pageant.

Chas: What, for rats?

Carl: Hey, come here!!

(Chas laughs)

Chas: I’m going to visit me dear family now by the way.

Carl: Sure you’re well enough?

Chas: I’m fine so stop worrying.

Carl: Can I come with you?

Chas: Feel free.

Carl: Is that the amount of encouragement I’m gonna get?

Chas: Yeah, get used to it, giraffe-man.

Chas got up and stalked into the bathroom.

Carl: (mutters to himself) Giraffe-man?


Chas looked had a shower and washed her hair. She wrapped a towel around her head. She grabbed her hair dryer and her tongs and started styling her hair.

20 minutes later, Chas had glossy ringlets and was wearing a pretty lilac blouse and jeans. She put on her make-up and went downstairs.

Carl: Whoa, show stopper what’s the occasion?

Chas: Shut up.

Carl: No seriously, where’re you going?

Chas: To Wishing Well, then I’m coming back here to get ready and then I’m going out.

Carl: Don’t you mean ‘we’?

Chas: Fine, whatever. Come on, we’re going.

Chas and Carl knocked on the door.

Belle opened the door, but she wasn’t her usual sparky self. She had rings around her eyes from lack of sleep and continual crying.

Belle: Chas!!

Lisa: (calls from inside) Who is it love?

Belle: Chas, can I tell you something?

Chas: What?

Belle: Um… can we go outside? (gestures to Carl) You can come to if you want.

Chas: What’s wrong with you?

Belle: Do you remember that girl from Hotten High school, Sophie Jones?

Chas: The ugly one with a lumpy nose?

Belle: She’s been… horrible about… us.

Chas: Us?

Belle: Us Dingles.

Chas: Does she know me?

Belle: Not you, me mum and me dad. And saying they…they’re

Chas: Hey… don’t worry about it. Where does she live?

Belle: You’re not gonna talk to her parents?

Chas: How old is she?

Belle: 13.
Chas: No way. Where does she live?

Belle: In… in Dugworth.

Chas: Carl, we’re going to Dugworth.

Carl: Right, so I’m your taxi now am I?

Chas: Yep, get in and drive. Belle, this is what you’ve got to do.

Sophie: Hey look who it is – ickle Belle. Where’s your Mummy? Or some other saddo from that family of yours?

Belle: Why do you always pick on me?

Sophie: Why, am I hurting lickle Belle’s feelings?

Belle: Stop it.

Sophie: What you gonna do?

(Chas appears)

Chas: (menacing) I wouldn’t wait to find out if I was you.

Sophie: Who are you?

Chas: The end of you if you ever go near her again.

Sophie: You…you can’t.

Chas: Oh yeah? And why’s that?

Sophie: I’ll tell my teacher on you.

Chas: Ooh now I’m scared.

Sophie: I will.

Chas: You and what army?

Sophie didn’t say anything.

Chas: Looks like it’s my word against yours.

Sophie: What are you gonna do to me?

Chas: (mocking) Hmm. Let me see.
Sophie: I wont go near her again.

Chas pinned her against the wall.

Chas: You’d better not. See me and Belle are quite close. She’ll tell me everything. And if I ever hear your name again in a bad way, I swear, I’ll make your life hell.

Sophie: I wont do anything again to her again.

Chas: She wont harm you. Me? Don’t ever try me. Ever touch her, even look at her, I’ll be on your back.

Chas put her hand on her neck and Sophie’s breathing quickened.

Chas: Got it?

Sophie: Y…Ye…yeah.

Chas: Good. Now do one. This is your last warning.

Sophie ran away at a frightening speed.

Chas: Nice one kiddo. I don’t think she’ll bother you again. And if she does, you know who to call.

Belle: Thanks Chas.

Chas: You’d better take lessons from Debbie. You’re getting too nice to be a true Dingle.

Belle laughed.

Chas: Come on Carl we’re going. I need to get back.


As she was climbing into the car, Chas felt a twinge in her tummy. She winced and bit her lip, worried. She knew she probably hadn’t have done what she just did. It had been unwise, especially if Sophie had fought back.

But what was done was done.

Carl: I’ll buy you the most expensive dress you can find if I can come with you to wherever you’re going

Chas: (imitating) You’re my boyfriend, not my financial advisor.

Carl: Are you coming or what?

Chas rolled her eyes. He could be SO clingy sometimes! She wanted to make something of her life. Without his money. She resented the fact that she had nothing, and, without him; she only just scraped a living. She had a dream. She wasn’t going to give it up.

Chas: I’m going on my own. I see you later. (kisses him)

Carl: Where’re you… (sighs as the door shuts behind her)

I think I did well in this area because it gave me the chance to work both individually and in a group situation
He loved her more than words could say, but she had been acting funny recently. She’d been distant with him, as if she was hiding something. He thought back to Cameron. Could there be something between them? Is that why she was going out now? To see him? She’d recovered from being ‘ill’ quickly. Was that a ploy to get him out the house? No. She’d been properly sick? It was early in the morning when it happened. It was about two now. You didn’t recover from tummy upsets that quickly. Unless…? She couldn’t be. She’d tell him. She wouldn’t hide it if she was. If she was, why had she got into the fight with Sophie? Belle was only her cousin. But the Dingles were so loyal to the whole family. She had chosen her Dad over Denzel.

So she was pregnant. Where was she now?

Carl threw down the copy of Scarlet’s homework. Why had she gone? What was she doing?

The questions came to him like stings. He had to find her. Her heart usually ruled over her head in arguments. He could manipulate her into telling him. He reached for his jacket and walked decidedly out of the back door.

Chas pondered a while. She had been planning to apply for a training course. She was sick of just being a receptionist. She was supposed to be one of the cleverest Dingles. She wanted to become a vet. She thought about Carl. She wouldn’t be able to start until she had had the baby. Unless she had an abortion. No. She couldn’t do that. She wouldn’t.

Had Carl guessed about her pregnancy? If he hadn’t already, it wouldn’t be long until he did. Why didn’t she just tell him? It would make things simpler. She didn’t have to do everything on her own. But didn’t everyone she relied on just let her down?

Sitting on the street corner. Starts to walk home swearing under her breath. Disappointed. Unlocks the door. Sighs as she realises Dad’s on the sofa, with a hangover. Notices another window shattered. Broken bottles on her floor. Swears as she cuts herself on it. Throws her bag at him. He grunts and turns over. Shouts at him for letting her down again.

Waiting for Lee outside the cinema. Sighs as the big hand reaches 8. Been stood up. Bitter tears collect in her eyes. Blinks furiously. Storms off. Let down again.

Expecting Cain to come home. 2 hours late. Slams the door behind her I fury. Walks out. Let down again.

Expecting compassion from Liam. Devastated when he turns his back on her.
Let down again.

Hoping for her family to…


Let down again and again.


Chas sighed bitterly. There was only one person she could rely on. Herself.
