Hiya hope you dont mind me having a go at this!! Please post what you think of it!! Sorry if its really bad!!
It was a cold snowy night in the Dales. Chas was walking back to Wishing well cottage after work. She reached inside her bag and drew out her phone. She began to type it but her numb fingers wouldn’t move and she dropped it on to the hard tarmac outside the garage.
Chas: Damn it!
A man was driving past; he was young with messy black hair.
Man: Are you ok?
Chas: Yeah, I’m fine!
Man: Do you want a lift to wherever you’re going?
Chas: No, I’ll walk thanks.
Man: Come on, its freezing out here.
Chas: Yeah that’s why clothes were invented.
Man: Shame in a way. I’m Cameron by the way.
Chas: That’s great but I’ve got to go.
Cameron: Look where are you going? I’ll drive you there and I can get to know you on the way.
Chas: Fine! You’re so stubborn!
Cameron: So are you, we make a good couple.
Chas got into the car. She instantly noticed it was very new and it looked very expensive.
Cameron: So where you going?
Chas: Wishing well cottage.
Cameron: Hey! You’re never a Dingle!!
Chas: You got a problem with that?
Cameron: No. I live in West Yorkshire. You know Haliton Abbey?
Chas: That massive house?
Cameron: Yeah, well my Dad owns that.
Chas: You’re having a laugh! Is it haunted? Cameron: Oh yeah. (pulls a scary face) There’s noises in the night, clanking and groaning. And strange disappearances and appearances in the dark rooms of the house!
Chas laughed. She was beginning to like Cameron. He was nice, good looking, funny. He seemed to like her a lot too.
Cameron: I’ll show you if you like!
Chas: (smiled) I’d like that.
Cameron: So would I.
Chas: Wishing well’s down there.
Cameron: Right, ok. You haven’t told me your name yet!
Chas: I’m Chas,
Cameron: Nice.
Chas: I suppose this is gonna look like a dump to you.
Cameron: No.
Chas: Are you allowed to mix with the lower classes like me?
Cameron: We’re not that posh!
Chas: Bet you’re Dad is.
Cameron: How would you know?
Chas: (sighs) I’ve had experiences with guys like you!
Cameron: Im not sure how to take that!
Chas: This is it!
Chas jumped down from the big 4 by 4. She could feel Cameron’s eyes on the back of her neck.
Cameron: Aren’t you gonna invite me in?
Chas: No, we’re not civilised enough for you.
Cameron: Oi!! Can I come?
Chas: I suppose so.
Cameron followed Chas up the path. He couldn’t remember feeling like this. There was something about Chas that attracted her to him.
Lisa: Oh Chas love we were starting to get worried.
Chas: Im here now.
Lisa: Who’s this?
Chas: This is Cameron. I met him on my way here. Is it ok if he comes in?
Lisa: Of course love, but there’s someone here who wants to talk to you. He’s been trying to get in all afternoon, but we didn’t let him, but he’s managed to sweet talk his way in with Belle.
Chas: What do you mean? Who is it?
Lisa: Well… it’s Carl.

Thanx guys!!
Chas: You’re not serious.
Lisa: I wouldn’t joke about him. We’ll try and get rid of him if you want.
Chas: No, its ok. I’ll manage.
Cameron: Look I’ll wait outside if you –
Chas: No. You can listen all you want. People need to know Carl King isn’t the dopey idiot most people take him for.
Chas stormed though the door. She had some things to say to Carl. Or shout to him. He’d rue the day he ever insulted her. Fury was pouring through her veins. How dare he? After everything he’d done!
Cameron followed her, secretly glad that she’d allowed him to see personal aspects of her life.
Chas: What the hell do you think you’re doing here!
Carl: Look just let me explain.
Chas: I’m letting you explain nothing. What you gonna explain this time? The 101 ways to why you hate me? But you know what that’s not what hurts. I was 14 when I had Aaron! You stupid git! Have you any idea what its like trying to bring up a kid when you’re still a kid yourself?
Carl: I haven’t come to insult you. I’m sorry for everything I said. If you knew-
Chas: I don’t wanna know anything about you! I hate you!
Carl looked at her, his eyes full of hurt. Chas looked away. Deep down inside she still loved Carl, but the outside of her remained cold and resentful. She would never be able to forgive him. He had dented her self-confidence, her pride, just about everything. She replayed the day when Carl dumped her in her head. She felt angry again, and the rage inside her sparked and peaked.
Chas: You think you’re the amazing parent. You left your kids! FOR WHAT CARL? SOME COW WITH A MINI SKIRT ON DOWN THE CASH AND CARRY? AND YOU THINK I’M AN AWFUL MOTHER? WHAT ABOUT YOUR PARENTING SKILLS?
Carl: Chas, please-
Chas: GET OUT! NOW!!
Carl: Wait –
Chas: GO!
Carl walked towards the door, his hopes shattered.
Carl: I just think you should know-
Chas: What? That you’ve been having it on with Deadly DCI Barraclough.
Carl: Don’t say things like that about her.
Chas: Oh what, like you did to me? What is she, your one true love?
Carl: Chas-
Chas: Oh go get a life Carl.
Carl: Why is it only wrong when I get someone else. Looks like you’ve got plans. (gestures to Cameron)
Chas: Like you know anything about it.
Carl: Grace is dead.
Chas shut her mouth.
Carl: She got hit by a lorry.
Chas: Look I’m sorry, I am, but I don’t want anything to do with you so please, just sod off.
Carl: There’s something else I need to tell you.
Chas: Well say it and go.
Carl: Can I talk to you on your own?
Chas: No. Say it now or not at all.
Carl: Fine. Jimmy’s in hospital. I want you to come back with me to Home Farm. I can’t cope without you.
Chas: I don’t think so.
Carl: Please.
Chas: I’ll never forgive you for what you said, what you’ve done. Now go.
Carl: I love you. I always have and I always will.
Chas: Bye Carl. Carl: You’re not coming?
Chas: What does it look like?
Carl: No. Well. Think about it please.
Chas: I’ve already thought about it. Now go.
Carl took one last look at her and left.
Cameron: Are you ok?
Chas: Yeah.
Lisa: Chas, love, I’m-
Chas: I don’t want to talk about it.
A tear ran down her face.
Cameron: Hey, don’t worry. Look do you want me to go?
Chas: No. Stay.
Outside Carl leaned against rail of the bridge. What could he do now? He was useless. He’d killed his Dad. Didn’t that completely prove what kind of sick worthless person he was. Chas hated him. He saw no reason to keep up his daily routine of torture. Watching her laugh, watching her smile, watching her flip, always watching, never talking. Knowing she’d never take him back, knowing he’d never hear a kind word from her again. She had a clean conscience. He didn’t deserve her. He deserved to die. He sought a dark deserted place that reflected himself.
He’d end it now.

Here's the next bit, hope you like it!!
Lisa, Zak, Sam, Belle, Chas and Cameron were eating dinner. Zak was sitting on the end. Lisa was next to Zak and Belle. Belle was in between Lisa and Sam, and Chas was next to Sam and Cameron, who was sitting on the end, close to Chas. Cameron was glowing inwardly. Chas was smiling too. Little did she know that she had driven Carl to the edge.
***
Carl sat on a sharp rock, near the river, thinking things over. Matt and Jimmy wouldn’t miss him. They should hate him for murdering their Dad. No one else would care. Chas had made it perfectly clear that she wanted nothing more to do with him. Carl sighed miserably. He had no purpose to live. He only caused pain wherever he went. Carl wandered over to the water. He bent down and dipped his hand in the freezing liquid. He could let it take his life. Walk into death’s arms. His heart thumped louder inside his ribcage, knowing that its beats were numbered.
He shook off the cowardly thoughts. He waded into the icy water. The water reached his knees. Carl kept walking, the water becoming more obstructive at every step. The water reached his chest. Carl thought about closing his eyes. No. He would meet his end like a brave man. He waded further out. He could no longer control his movement. The water reached his chin.
Carl pictured Chas in his head. He didn’t need to see her in his head. Her image was imprinted on his heart. He knew her face would never fade in his eternal mental gallery.
Then the water swept him out.
***
Lisa: You’d make a lovely couple, you two would.
Chas: It’s a bit early for that, I think.
Cameron: You never know.
Lisa: You’ve got to move on love.
Chas: I know. I’m just… I’m going for a walk.
Cameron: You will come back wont you?
Chas: ‘Course I will you muppet. I just feel a bit hot; I’ll see you in a minute.
Chas left, feeling confused. She liked Cameron a lot already, but she couldn’t deny that she still felt something for Carl, whatever she told anyone else.
Cameron: Do you think she likes me? Lisa: Yeah. You go so well together.
***
Chas walked down to the river. She needed some space to clear her head.
***
Carl couldn’t breathe. He panicked. He was in deep now. The current was pulling him down. His head broke the surface and he yelled for help. Then he was sucked down into the depths of the river.
***
Chas snapped out of her reverie. She had heard her name and a plea for help. Had it been inside her head? Or had it been for real? She wandered down to the waters edge.
Would she see Carl before it was too late?

Here’s the next part!!
Chas squinted into the darkness. She thought she could see... or was it just her imagination?
***
Carl thrashed around in the water, trying to get his head above the water. Waves of panic rushed thru him. He made a massive struggle and his face broke the surface of the water. He yelled the name that had been hovering in his thoughts for months on end.
***
Chas heard him. She saw him. What could she do? He was drowning! HE WAS GOING TO DIE!! She had to help him! She couldn’t let him go where she couldn’t follow. Her head was in a mess, she couldn’t think straight. She was a strong swimmer. She could save him. Without thinking she threw off her coat and her shoes. They would only get in the way.
Chas: I’M COMING!! DON’T LEAVE!!
Chas shouted these words in desperation. She knew he probably wouldn’t hear her.
She was wrong.
She dived into the water. She was amazed at how well she could see in the murky river. Her body was streamlined and she glided thru the water better than the suicide-intent Carl had done. As she swam into the deeper part of the river, she found it more difficult to swim against the current. She kicked out harder. She could see Carl, he hadn’t seen her. She grabbed his arm, he was semi-unconscious and she struggled to pull him with her. He was heavy - almost double her weight. She tried to swim to the surface, but Carl kept her under the water. She was already physically exhausted; Carl was so big, compared with her. Her muscles were seizing up. She sank further into the dark, unable to breathe.
Strangely enough she thought of Cameron, a flood of adrenaline poured thru her and she was suddenly very conscious of what she stood to lose if she let the water win. She kicked out again, and she flew forward, as if she had flippers, making use of resources she never knew she had.
She stood vertically and she felt hard pebbles underneath her, cutting into her feet. She laughed out loud she was so relieved. Carl mumbled something. She let go of his arm. She was breathing heavily but shallowly, her pulse was rapid and she shivered violently. She was suffering from the effects of the cold and the beginnings of hypothermia. She slipped her hands around Carl’s chest and pulled him clear of the water. Then she collapsed, unable to support her own weight.
She flung her arm round to where she had dumped her bag and found her phone and dialled 999.
***
Five minutes later, and Chas was waiting for the ambulance. She crawled over to Carl and checked his pulse. She felt his wrist. He didn’t… didn’t have a pulse. She checked his neck and she could feel it. She breathed a sigh of relief.
She recognised the familiar siren echo in the distance and a set of blue lights reflect on the water. It grew louder and louder until…
Ambulance guy: Miss Dingle?
Chas: (shivering) Y… Ye…Yeah, h…he’s over here.
Ambulance guy: Right. We’ve got two cases of hypothermia; one more progressed than the other. We’ll need to get you both to hospital and in the warm as soon as possible.
Chas: Why me?
The man looked at her as if to say ‘What a stupid question.’
Ambulance: You’ve been in the water too. You should have waited for help. That was a very silly thing to do. But it was also selfless and brave. OK, now get into the back; we’ll soon have you both sorted out.
Chas tried to stand up, but her limbs wouldn’t support her. She tries again and managed a very slow, stumbling walk. She flung herself into the back, while Carl was being carried in on a stretcher.
***
They’d been sitting in the back for a while. Chas was feeling better and had stopped stuttering. Carl woke up and laid his hand on Chas.
Carl: Chas… thanks.
Chas: Get off me.
Carl: I…
Chas: Why did you do it?
Carl: No point in it… anymore.
Chas: Don’t you dare do that again! Carl: I thought you wanted… me out your life.
Chas: I thought I did.
Carl: Why didn’t you let me die?
Chas: I wouldn’t stand around and watch anyone die.
Carl: You said you hated me.
Chas: What makes you think anything’s changed?
Carl: Do you feel anything for me?
Chas: (quietly) I… I don’t know.
Carl put his hand on Chas’ again and this time she didn’t shake it off.
Carl: I still love you. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel the same.
Chas: You said that to me last Christmas.
Carl: And I’m saying it again. You couldn’t say it then. Can you say it now?
Chas: I’ve risked my life for you. Isn’t that enough?
Carl: I wish you hadn’t, unless you tell me what I want to hear.
Chas: What, you think just because you chuck yourself into a river that everything will be OK again?
Carl: Look me in the eye and say it.
Chas looked round fiercely, but when she saw Carl’s sorry expression she melted and looked away.
Carl: (softly) I thought so.
Chas: Shut up. Just shut up.
Carl: You can’t deny there’s still something there… after all this time.
Chas: I can.
Carl: There is. I saw your face when you looked away. Look at me now. Look at me!
Chas turned slowly to look at him. She tried to keep her face cold and neutral, but she felt something flicker in her heart and she was sure in showed in her eyes. She avoided Carl’s gaze until she had no choice and she risked a glance into his clear blue eyes. She could feel his gaze penetrating her soul and she shut her eyes, knowing they would be her giveaway.
Carl: (softly) Open your eyes.
Chas obeyed him involuntarily. She looked at him for a second more, but then her eyes darted away.
Carl: It’s still there, Chas. Deep down, there’s still something there.
Chas: (coldly) You’d better shut up. We’re almost there.
Carl heeded her and fell silent, thinking.
Chas also fell silent. She thought about what fortune had in store for her. There were many paths into the future.
Which one should she take?

Sorry about the rubbish scene when they were found – I don’t know what people are like when they’ve nearly drowned – but I did the best I could! Hope it was ok!!

Long part coming up!!
***
Next day. Chas had arrived home and she had related what had happened at the river to the Dingles, and Cameron. Chas had been very vague about when Carl had woken up. She didn’t want them to know about the scene in the back of the ambulance.
Chas: (to Cameron) How come you’re back here?
Cameron: Heard about the newfound heroine.
Chas: You don’t need to take the mick.
Cameron: I’m not! Not many people have the guts to do what you did.
Chas: Yeah, well, no need to make a big deal of it, ay. How did you find out?
Cameron: Lisa phoned me.
Chas: Dunno why the hell she did that, but still.
Cameron: Don’t you have to see the police?
Chas: Yeah, not yet tho.
Cameron: Need a lawyer?
Chas: Probably not. Why?
Cameron: I am one.
Chas: Really?
Cameron: Yeah, I work in the Chambers down in Leeds.
Chas: Well you’re doing better than me, I guess.
Cameron: Yeah, unless you’re a multimillionaire.
Chas: I’m nowhere near that league.
Cameron: Do you want to come out to dinner with me tomorrow?
Chas: That was a bit unexpected.
Cameron: Yeah, well I’m not very subtle.
Chas: (cheeky) You can’t be a very good lawyer. Don’t you need subtlety in your trade?
Cameron: Just answer the question.
Chas: Umm…
Chas thought of Carl. What would he think when he found out she was going out with someone else? How could she do this to him?
Chas: Isn’t it a bit early for that? You hardly know me.
Cameron: Well this is a good way for me to get to know you then.
Chas thought of Carl again. He’d insulted her. He’d let her down so many times. He’d slept with her cousin. What did it matter what Carl thought?
Chas: Yeah, all right then.
Cameron: (happy) Brilliant! I’ll phone you tonight.
Chas: (less enthusiastically than him) Great.
Cameron: See you!
Chas: Yeah. Bye.
Chas felt guilty. What for? She liked Cameron. A lot. So what was eating her away inside?
Carl.
He haunted her dreams at night. He was with her for most of her waking hours. Why? She loved him. Did she tho? Why did she get tense when Cameron was in the room then? She couldn’t love two people at the same time.
***
She walked outside. She wandered to the open countryside, not too far from the river. She let the wind whip her hair out of her face. It was nice, being solitary, away from anyone else.
Someone called her name. Someone who’s voice she would recognise anywhere. It was Carl. She didn’t turn around.
Carl: Chas!
Chas: (without turning, as if she was talking to the wind) Take it they discharged you then.
Carl: I… yeah this afternoon.
Chas: Good.
Carl: I thought I’d find you here.
Chas: Well you thought right then, didn’t you.
Carl: You OK?
Chas: I suppose so.
Carl: Which is short for, no not really.
Chas: (sighs) Is there anything you need to say, or do you want to leave me alone.
Carl: I just wanted to talk to you, after I… after yesterday.
Chas: Yeah, and?
Carl: I… um, have you thought about what I said yesterday.
Chas: (cagily) I think about everything from time to time.
Carl: Have you… uh…changed your mind?
Chas: No.
Carl: I know you’re stubborn, but can you just –
Chas: Stubborn?! You think this is because I’m stubborn?
Carl: No, not all –
Chas: I’m asking you nicely. Go away
Carl: After you’ve looked me in the eye and told me you don’t love me.
Chas: (straight away) I don’t love you.
Carl: You didn’t look me in the eye.
Chas: Shut up and leave me alone. I came here to get some space.
Carl: Needed to clear your head?
Chas: Yeah, get away from everything at Wishing well.
Chas was amazed at how nicely she had said this last sentence.
This encouraged Carl.
Carl: Same actually. I’ve had it up to here with Matt, and Jimmy’s not much better.
Chas: I had it up to here with Matt the first time I met him.
Carl: Don’t blame you. How’s everything at Dingle central?
Chas: Rowdy, as usual. Sammy’s got new chickens, and I’ve spent all morning naming them. Zak’s with the cops, dunno what for, and Belle’s in trouble at school.
Why was she being so civil? What was wrong with her?
Carl was determined not to spoil this golden moment.
Carl: What for?
Chas: Fighting. Like her lovely cousin - I got expelled for that in year 9.
Carl: Doesn’t surprise me. That was without army training as well.
Chas: Yeah, quite impressive really.
Carl: How’s your dad?
Chas: I’ve got him on a new regime. I’ve diluted all the cans of beer that he’s drunk so far with apple juice.
Carl: And he agreed to this?
Chas: No. I just did it anyway.
Carl started to laugh, and Chas smiled, grudgingly.
Carl moved slightly closer to her. He leant in, and kissed her. She didn’t pull away, so he kissed her again, and then hugged her.
Carl: (whispers) I love you. I’ll never let anything come betweens us again. Please. Give me another chance.
Chas was crying silently into Carl’s chest. Tears had welled inside her eyelids, and were spilling down her cheeks.
Someone had once told her that destiny was like a jigsaw. Every time that she had to make a decision, it was like drawing a piece blindly and slotting it into place on the board, and each piece affected the end picture.
Should she take the piece with Carl’s face on or Cameron’s?
She knew, in her inner heart, that she loved Carl. Did that mean she should choose Carl?
Chas freed herself from Carl’s arms.
Carl: Chas?
Chas: I’m going to sleep on it. If, IF, I decide we can give it another go, then I’ll find you by midday. If you haven’t seen me by then, don’t come looking for me.
Carl: I love you.
Chas: Bye Carl.
***
Chas stalked off into the distance. Carl watched her go, praying he’d see her tomorrow.
Chas sighed.
She had less than 24 hours to decide what piece to choose.
***
Hope you guys like it!!

Here’s the next the next part!!
***
Chas tossed and turned that night. She had cancelled her date with Cameron, saying she felt ill. She was feeling guilty – he had looked so hurt.
“Its all Carl’s fault,” she thought angrily. “I wouldn’t be in this mess if it wasn’t for him.”
She vented her anger on her pillow, punching it into a more comfortable shape. She turned over and spent yet more hours thinking over the most influential decision of her life.
***
Carl was having his breakfast on his own. Matt and Jimmy had already left for the office. His tummy was churning. Would she turn up?
***
Chas woke up. She had made her decision; she thought it thru and grinned wickedly. She had a shower and chose her pretty periwinkle blue dress. She tied a long darker blue scarf around her waist, like a casual sash. She found some accessories, put them on and crept downstairs and out the front door.
***
Carl heard the door open. Had she come?
? : All right Carlos?
Carl: (With a sinking feeling) Why are you here?
Matt: Forgot some papers. What’s up with you?
Carl: Feel sick.
Matt: Aww, go on get to bed, I’ll bring you a nice hot water bottle and kiss it better.
Carl: Shut up and get lost.
Matt: See ya.
Carl put his hands on his hands on his neck, and breathed deeply. It was 11:30. She only had half an hour to the midday deadline.
***
Chas walked up to the vets.
Chas: Paddy?
Paddy walked out the room.
Paddy: Chastity.
Chas: That’s me.
Paddy: Mrs Jenkinhall’s left her Chihuahua here and I need you to sort out the invoice and –
Chas: I’m not working today.
Paddy: What?! No, I need help –
Chas: No I can’t, and don’t look at me like that – it’s not gonna work.
Paddy: Why? You’re not ill, you can’t go.
Chas: Watch me.
Chas turned around and walked outside.
She looked at her watch. 11:45. She smirked. Carl would be getting really worried now.

Carl walked to the door. He could always go back on his promise. He could go looking for her. If he’d done what she told him to do, they’d never have got engaged. He opened the door and waited. He’d wait for 10 minutes, until midday, then he’d go and look for her.
He saw a figure coming up the road. Was it her?
It was. She looked perfect. Carl could hardly believe his luck.
Carl: CHAS!
Chas neared the door of Home Farm.
Carl: You came. We’re back together!
Chas: What’s the time?
Carl: You… 12:05.
Chas: (softly) Is that before midday?
Carl: No.
Chas: So why would we be back together?
Carl: But… but you came.
Chas: I can’t forgive you for what you’ve done.
Carl: Please… You’ve got no idea how much I love you. I… (Carl turns around, he walks in a circle)
Chas: I came here, so you’d be in no doubt of how things lay. What happened yesterday was a one off – it wont happen again.
Carl: You can’t do this to me. I love you more than I ever thought I could love someone.
Chas: It’s over.
Carl: No. I love you and I know you feel something for me.
Chas: You’re deluding yourself.
Carl: You can’t say that kiss was a one off. In the ambulance…
Chas: It meant nothing. Carl: It did. And so does this.
He pushed her against the wall, so she could pull away, and kissed her passionately.
Carl: (whispers) Go on then. Say it. Tell me to back off.
Chas looked at him, at last seeing the major flaw in her plan. She loved him too much.
Carl kissed all down her neck, and stroked her face.
Carl: You’d leave me?
He kissed her again.
Carl: Don’t do it.
Chas: I don’t have a choice.
Carl: You do. Stay here. With me.
Chas: I won’t.
Chas struggled, but Carl drew her to his arms. She was no match for his strength. He kissed the top of her head
Carl: What’s stopping you? Pride?
Carl stopped, struck by a sudden thought. He let go of Chas.
Chas: I’m going.
Carl: You’re going nowhere.
Chas: Yes I am.
Carl: Get inside this house.
Chas: No.
Carl: Do it now.
Chas: NO.
Carl lifted her up and carried her inside.
Carl: I seem to be making a habit of this.
Chas started hitting him, kicking him, trying to hurt him.
Carl put her down on her sofa, and locked all the doors.
Carl: You’re not getting out until you admit you love me.
Chas threw him a contemptuous look, and in the heat of the moment she scrambled to her feet and ran across the room.
Carl: I’ve locked that door too.
Chas: What do you want?
Carl: (in a hazy voice) Marry me.
Chas: No.
Carl: I don’t understand. We both know that you love me and I love you.
Chas: It’s not about love! It’ s about you, letting me down in everything.
Carl: I’ll never let you down again.
Chas: Yeah, and I’ve heard that before.
Carl: I mean it. How can I prove it?
Chas: You can’t. That’s why we’ll never be together.
Carl: We will! I swear it!
Chas: I… I don’t know what to say to you anymore.
Carl: How about I love you Carl? Would it be a lie?
Chas hung her head in shame.
Chas: (quietly) No.
Carl: Am I liar in your eyes?
Chas: Yes. You’re a deceitful git.
Carl: And you still love me. Is there a chance of an us again?
Chas sighed. She couldn’t lie to him. She loved him. Love was supposed to endure disappointment.
Chas: If… yes.
Carl: How? Tell me!
Chas: No more secrets.
Carl: No more secrets.
Chas: That’s it.
Carl: Everything?
Chas: Yes.
Carl: Are we back together.
Chas: You’re hopeful.
Carl: Are we?
Chas: At long last.
They kissed.
Chas had chosen the piece to fit into the jigsaw.
